“Faded but fine”

Have been many times for dinner, stayed and for parties - lovely location, but still a little faded in its glory. Food is good, and the atmosphere is very chilled.

“How staff can put you off”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2013

I am a member of the gym attached to this hotel, and have eaten in the restaurant a number of times and the food has always been good but you are made to feel very unwelcome, it has a very business atmosphere which on occasion has made it feel a little cold. I am told that Sunday lunch is very good.

“Excellent customer service”

I recently came to this hotel for afternoon to tea to celebrate my mothers birthday.
The service we received from the food and beverage manager was outstanding. Extremely attentive, knowledgeable and took his time to explain all the difference options available to us.
We had plenty of food. All of which was very fresh and with alot of choice, which you don't always get with afternoon tea. We were given plenty of space and time to relax and enjoy ourselves without having to wait at all when we needed refills or anyone else.
The lovely manager even offered to start our car for us to getting warm so we weren't waiting in the cold! Definitely a top afternoon, I will be retiring very soon!

“Perfection is in the detail”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2012

Sunday lunch is a fairly predictable meal and, if one is used to eating well-cooked Sunday lunches at home on a regular basis, one expects a hotel chef to pull out all the stop to produce something special since ,with any luck,we've all got so many good Sunday meals under our belts which can act as comparisons. This Sunday lunch missed the mark unfortunately. It started well with a good salmon starter and a delicious goat's cheese cheesecake with a crisp but sweet garnish of red onion. The elements of the main courses were variable:the lamb, cut thickly and generously served ,won praise;the pork did not appear to have been roasted, its texture being rather soft and wet, with no crackling or apple sauce to give it a lift.Vegetables were generous, though potatoes were rather dry.The strawberry cheesecake did not deserve its name: a rectangle of plain cheesecake with a thin pink rubbery coat on top. Not a strawberry in sight or taste. However, the accompanying strawberry ice-cream was very nice.Small niggles:butter was on the table but no bread was offered;chocolate mints arrived after coffee was finished and we were about to leave the table.Service was friendly.
The price of the three course meal was not excessive for a 4 star venue and the dining-room itself is attractive, so one has to ask why there were so few people dining there.I note that some other diners have been very happy with their experience,so perhaps this was by and large a rare "off - day" that can certainly happen to all home cooks and,I guess,to professsional chefs also. However, the quality of some food items,eg the pork and the bland cheesecake, for example, cannot be put down to unfortunate blips on the day.

great food and service with a knowledgable but not snooty sommelier to assist with the wine list.
The duck with daupinnoise potatoes was a clear favourite on our table
