Sanctuary in the Cove
Reviewed January 23, 2012

Wonderful accommodation set in a private, secure garden paradise with amazing sea views. We stayed in the Pohutukawa Cottage over Christmas and it was truly special. Bruce was a welcoming and friendly host and the bottle of champagne upon arrival a lovely touch. The cottage was clean, well appointed with full kitchen facilities if needed. A BBQ was also available.

It was wonderful to have breakfast outside in the garden and enjoy the incredible view, later on grabbing one of the cottage's own kayaks to explore the cove!

It was also a great place to explore the area from - we went right up to Cape Reinga and Te Paki sand dunes.

We left the Pohutukawa Cottage with a heavy heart but will definitely book it again when visiting this beautiful part of NZ. Thanks Bruce for sharing your spot of paradise!

We stayed in the main house as the Bach's were fully booked. Bruce is an excellent host, very accommodating. The accommodation is set in beautiful grounds, a type of botanical gardens. Breakfast was great. Bruce's girlfirend prepared a wonderful continental breakfast. On the down side for $275 per night the accommodation was a bit pricey compared to other B&B's and the room weren't serviced. I would have expected that for the price we were paying. The house is great with fantastic views.

From the friendly pre-arrival correspondence to a very warm welcome Bruce (owner) was a very gracious host. Sanctuary in the Cove is in a very secure and peaceful location with a stunning view. Set amongst lovely gardens with a wonderful water garden too this place is like staying in your very own holiday home right on the water. It is a great place to explore. We enjoyed using the kayaks and also exploring the rock pools when the tide was out. My husband even went out fishing. The weather was unseasonally warm. It is also a wonderful place to explore the Far North from. It was our first time in Northland so we had a good look around. Going to Kaitaia and Cape Reinga, the Karikari peninsula and quaint Mangonui. We stayed in the Pohutakawa Cottage which is well appointed with great kitchen facilities if you want to stay at home for dinner. If not, there are several cafes and restaurants within a few minutes driving distance. We highly recommend this spot for your Far North holiday.

Totally fantastic accomodation - very peaceful, private, clean and all ammenities you need for a relaxing retreat. We came here for some R & R before Christmas for 4 days. We were met by the owner Bruce who was very hospitable but never compromised our privacy. Full kitchen with everything you could ask for even down to recycable green bags to shop at the local four square with. Could not fault anything and would definately return and recommend to others who are after a secluded paradise. Only 2 hours drive from Cape Reinga which is an excellent day trip from Santuary in the cove. 10 out of 10!

We spent four days at this idyllic retreat – it is a stunning location and is just like the photos. It was very relaxing, a perfect escape during our rugby world cup holiday.

Bruce was lovely – welcoming and helpful but at the same time allowing complete privacy – incidentally we hardly saw anyone. The citrus fruit and sparkling wine was a lovely surprise. The cottage was very clean, spacious and well equipped. The beachfront and the beautiful gardens were magnificent.

Although excellently situated for exploring the area, it was very difficult to leave the cove. One late afternoon at low tide, sitting on the rocks, gazing across the bay, a pod of dolphins swam by – absolutely wonderful!

We left Cove Cottage reluctantly – the clear blue sky, the dazzling sunshine – we could easily have stayed … hopefully one day we will be lucky enough to return.

Gorgeous spot, a true sanctuary as the name suggests. Spotless accomodation tucked away in a unique part of Northland. Our time was to short but definately on the return to list when some R & R is needed without the children.

Ideal base for DINKies like myself. Fantastic location, just a short amble from a secluded cove with few visitors. So idyllic that it's tempting just to sit and muse all day, soaking in the surroundings. Friendly owner who is happy to give guests as much privacy as they want. VERY VERY peaceful, which is a double edged sword to some extent - 9 hour plus sleeps most nights and slow starts! Good amenities, didn't want for anything. Great for birdwatchers (song thrush actually nesting on the decking trellis - hope they hatch OK!!! - someone let me know!!) and kayakers/fishermen. Plenty of fruit trees (freshly squeezed orange juice every morning) and beautiful water garden. Good base for exploring the far north. Free wifi a bonus for when the weather doesn't play ball. Can't fault.
