Hotell Alfred Nobel
Ranked #2 of 3 Hotels in Karlskoga
Reviewed August 9, 2012 via mobile

I stayed whilst on business. We arrived in Karlskoga to pouring rain, deserted streets and a general feeling of misery after a long drive fr Stockholm, so I'm sure this contributed to the feeling the the Alfred Nobell was more of a prison than a hotel! The lobby was fine and the staff pleasant, but on venturing upstairs it was like travelling back to the 70s - tiny bed with thin mattress, stained carpet and walls, Bakolite telephone and heavy twin doors. Wifi is provided through a mobile phone company and hence is chargeable.

Location is good, with a few food places nearby - the curry house was perfectly adequate for our needs although a lot of the other places seemed to be little more than kebab shops.

Unfortunately the Bofors Hotel was closed for the holiday week, but I will certainly be staying there on my next visit in order to avoid the Alfred Nobell!

One of the three Hotels in Karlskoga - the others being the excellent Bofors and the tired Karlskoga Hotel and Conference centre. Positives are central location opposite the main square, Harry's Bar & Restaurant, friendly staff, nice communal areas esp reception, Gym/Sauna/tanning beds, free wifi, free snacks/drinks in reception and billiard table. Negatives are no carpark (public one is nearby or on street at night), dated tired decor, poor shower attachment, no safe, no plug for sink, old furniture, uncomfortable slatted bed, tiny pillows, no tea/coffee maker in room and poor TV channel choice. Room rate is reasonable at around 1,000 SEK. Apparently the Hotel is being refurbished - one room done so far so perhaps give it a miss until 2013 or go to the Bofors which is a 5 min taxi or 15 min walk from town.

This hotel was perfect for what it was: a place to stay during a business trip. The bed was quite soft (it had a mattress topper), and the room was is pretty good shape. I had to ask for soap at the front desk, but I think it was a simple mistake that it wasn't in the room. Wi-Fi was provided with the package I had, with a 24-hour guest log-in ticket (one per night you were staying). The breakfast I found to be quite satisfactory: they had Swedish/European style as well as some bacon and eggs. Pretty standard continental breakfast. My favorite part, of course, was the pool table. They had a set of billiard balls at the front desk you could use, and I spent a lot of downtime playing. I didn't try the bar, but there are good pizza/falafel places and an Indian restaurant very close by. Judging by the size of Karlskoga itself, I'd say not a bad place to stay, especially for business trips. If you're (for some reason) visiting on vacation, don't miss the Alfred Nobel museum at his Bufors house. They have English language tours as well as Swedish. It's definitely worth the money.
