“Nice hotel in a superb garden!”
Reviewed January 2, 2011

We had a wonderful time at la Bokaina and highly recommend this place! The garden is the perfect place to relax and the beach is only a few minutes away. Evelyne and her daughter gave us great advice on things to do and restaurants to try out! Especially the little restaurant next door, Madera Fina, is a must!

We can highly recommend La Bokaina to everybody who is looking for a perfect place to have relaxing holidays. We enjoyed the great breakfast with fresh juice and arrepas, the beautiful garden with lots of exotic birds, lying in the hammock reading books or using the free WiFi. The room was very nice and clean and we appreciated the warm shower.

Evelyn, the owner and charming heart of La Bokaina, has helped us a lot whenever we needed her. She is highly engaged to fulfil the requests of her guests and she as well as her son Javier and her staff have done far more than we had ever expected.

Carlos who prepares the delicious breakfast has now the little restaurant Madera Fina which is only a few walking minutes from La Bokaina. To have a five-course dinner at Madera Fina is a fantastic event you should not miss.
Both La Bokaina and Madera Fina were absolute highlights on our trip throughout Venezuela.

I found La Bokaina as a beautiful, peaceful and charming place I’ve ever been before, is in side nature, you can feel the silence of the environment, the see waves, the wind passing through the trees, the birds singing, the river passes near the place so you can hear it...see it, and the personal attention that Mrs. Evelyn gives to all her guests is just perfect, she is a beautiful person and that`s really important when you are a tourist in a place you don`t know.

The room was amazing, super clean, the bathroom is big and comfortable super clean too, it has air conditioned and a fan, good light, anti mosquitoes net so insects can’t pass to your room while you’re sleeping...that’s important, there are hamacas all over the place just to relax, the water comes from a well so it`s great, it has cold and hot water.
The food is made by a chef is the best restaurant in all Choroni.
Here in Venezuela we have a lot of beaches, I’ve been in all of them but nothing compares the beauty and easy access by sea of Cepe, Uricao, Chuao, La Cienaga (which is a paradise), etc.
La bokaina has private access to one of the beaches of Puerto Colombia, so you can stay there and feel all the energy of the virgin place.
This is the most nature related accommodation place I found in choroni. If you want to disconnect yourself from the city noise and stress of maybe just something different this is the place I recommend because it worked for me and my husband.
The place was full when i arrived there were a family from Canada and a couple from England the rest were Venezuelans, the amazing thing was that in all places you can find privacy and you don´t feel the place crowded or annoying sounds...
So it`s perfect.
The people in Choroni is kind and happy is a very secure place in venezuela.

Particularly on weekends, Choroni, or better Puerto Colombia, where the beach is, can be quite crowded and loud. This posada has the advantage of being within five minutes walk of the village but is peaceful and quiet. The lush gardens are accessible from all rooms (each one with its hammock) and breakfast is served on the terrace. The restaurant service is friendly and good, the evening meals on offer are of very good quality. The rooms are simple but well decorated and functional. The air conditioning is a bit dated and loud, but one gets used to it fairly quickly. As anywhere in this area, at certain times of the year, insects can be a problem. The rooms are relatively free of them, when outside one does need repellent.

We stayed at Posada La Bokaina after finding it on this website. We'd pored through an incredibly out of date Lonely Planet (don't even bother, it's written in 2006 and so much is incorrect!) and I'd found this place as an alternative to going to Los Roques. We stayed for 6 nights and it was bliss. This posada isn't actually in Choroni, it's in Puerto Colombia, which is a good thing because Choroni is quite far inland. However, La Bokaina feels really detached from Puerto Colombia, which is lovely and relaxing. We found most of Venezuela to feel really unsafe so it was lovely to find a little haven, with wifi which was amazing for us iPhone geeks. Carlos the chef is amazing, by far the best point of this posada. Breakfast was included in the rate but we asked him to do dinner for us (he will happily for anyone) which cost a fair bit more than the restaurants in town but it was amazing. 3 courses of really fresh local ingredients, fresh fish and puddings with wine included too. Much recommended. The posada is run by Evelyn, but we booked through her daughter Monica through emailing her and a bank transfer. Monica was amazingly helpful both before, during and after our stay, even letting us settle the remainder of our bill through a bank transfer when we got home! One word of advice, bring as many dollars as you think you'll need for the whole trip; the banks ran out of money for a few days (it was carneval) and we discovered that our HSBC card only worked at one bank, which wasn't in Choroni. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay at La Bokaina and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is thinking of travelling to Puerto Colombia.

Evelyn, the owner, runs a fantastic 10 room posada a few minutes from Puerto Columbia / Choroni. The rooms are welcoming, clean, nicely decorated, and cool with air conditioning. The hammocks are a lovely touch and we spent many hours lounging around the posada listening to the birds flying around the beautiful gardens. The grounds are extensive and lush. The chef, Carlos, creates superb food for breakfast and dinner. We had no reason to eat anywhere else and didn't regret it. He also knocks up excellent cocktails! Plenty of beaches to see nearby by boat - Evelyn and Julian can help arrange boat trips and guides.

This posada is fantastic and was the highlight of our trip to Choroni - perfect for a romantic getaway or honeymoon. Could not fault the place.

Choroni is a dusty, picturesque fishing village flanked by mountains jutting from the southern Caribbean. You have to be brave just to get here - the 4 hours from the traffic cauldron of Caracas, with cars overtaking you at suicidal speeds on poorly maintained highways, are best managed by a Venezuelan driver. Keep a defibrillator handy for the final hour ascending and then descending Venezuela's spectacular coastal mountain chain along a twisting, sinuous road with hairpin bends that sardonically narrows to a single lane at its most vertiginous points. In the final descent to the sea you pass villages that straddle a rushing mountain stream. The last of these, Choroni, has only one real beach, Playa Grande, a palm-lined jewel sadly asphyxiating in garbage, the result of over-exuberant domestic tourism, to be polite. The beaches you really want to see are only accessible by "penero" (penyero), the fast, motor-launches that crowd the narrow harbour at the mouth of the stream, chaotically vying for passengers and cargo. There's Cepe, Chuao, and the most beautiful of all, Uricao. So Choroni is not so much a destination but a base, another point of departure, and so to have a delightful, tranquil spot to rest and recuperate after a day on the sea is a real delight. La Bokaina is just that, off the beaten track, but only a ten minute walk, crossing the stream on a bamboo bridge, then through the village, to the harbour. Surrounded by tropical forest, the grounds are beautifully manicured, lush with date palms, bougainvillea and crotus. The rooms, just ten of them, stretch out from the kitchen and reception area iike a sprawling colonial bungalow, with terra cotta roofs, natural wood beam cielings, stucco walls. Each room has a hammock strung invitingly in front of it, but it's a ittle too hot in the daytime for my taste to sprawl in a hammock, and evenings are best spent in other activities. The rooms are air-conditioned, no worries there, though the heat can seem oppressive if you have been used to the relatively more temperate Caracas, at just under 900m above sea level. Despite the modesty of the place, there is fulltime WiFi and the food is better than anything you will find in town. Carlos, the Ecuadorean chef, is a master, creative and gracious. There's a cool breeze in the evening on the dining room/patio. After one not-so-great dinner in the village, which can get a little noisy and raucous at night, we ate breakfast and supper exclusively at the Posada. Why go anywhere else? All the water is purified, even the ice, and they wash the vegetables in purified water as well. Sra. Evelyn, the owner, knows everything and everyone in Choroni and surrounding area, and is very helpful. This is a destination for intrepid travellers who are not shy about needing some basic comfort. The rooms are clean and comfortable with no TV except in a common room and no phones, but so what. Reservations have to be secured by wire transfer as Evelyn doesn't take credit cards and using them in Venezuela is probably not advisable. The hotel has a website, read about Choroni, and dream.
