Posada Azul Marino
Ranked #6 of 9 Jose Ignacio B&B and Inns

I've stayed at Azul Marino twice over the past couple of years.

Its a beautiful place. The owners and staff are very helpful. There's complete flexibility as to when you have breakfast (which is nice if you've had a late one the night before), lots of things like that make you feel very at home and relaxed.

The location is also very good, Jose Igancio beach is less than 5 minutes away by car and the hotel is on a road between two of the best restaurants in the area (Marismo and Namm), each is a few hundred yards away from the hotel. In fact, all the best restaurants in Punta del Este are in Jose Ignacio so you're never far from some great food (try La Huella and Garzon aswell). You can also drive down to La Barra in 20-30 minutes for more beaches and the best bars/clubs in Punta del Este.

I would most definitely recomment this place (I've been twice) and if I visit Uruguay again I'd go back without hesitation.

Finally, I noticed a couple of people saying you need a car and there aren't many ATMs around. This is true but its the same for anywhere you'd stay in Jose Ignacio. I'd also say that you'd need a car no matter where you are in Punta del Este. Punta del Este, La Barra and Jose Ignacio are stretched out over about 25km of coast.

We stayed in this posada because neighbour Posada Arenas de José Ignacio was full. We thought Azul Marino was going to be better because is 150.00usd more expensive, and the truth is that Posada Arenas was better (ie: A/C, bigger rooms, WI-FI in all areas, & bigger swiming pool )
For americans and other tourists I recommed to rent a car, as it is located in a lovely area but outside Jose Ignacio town (1 mile) also bring cash because there are no ATMs and most of the shops don´t accept credit cards.
The area is beautifull and it is located closed from cool restaurants Namm, Marismo and Sarava, and 2 blocks from Casa Suaya (other posada)
It is very expensive in december /january, the rooms is not a 400usd room, and internet access is only available from lobby, and very slow. GUYS get another modem!!

Having frequented Jose Ignacio for over a decade (I rent a house there every summer), I have to say that as a Bread and Breakfast this place is highly recommendable. I stayed there almost a week this summer after I had to turn in my rented house and I was just not ready to leave the beach yet. Azul Marino is like staying at someone`s home... but with the privacy of a small hotel. Typical of the area, it is understated but very clean and with everything you need for a beach place. My room had AC and a tv that my children watched a little bit at night.

The view of the pennisula and lighthouse is amazing. It is run by the owners, which I prefer, and it is easy!! Breakfast is served when you are ready, not with some annoying schedule. My children loved the restaurant because basically they told us what was fresh and my children asked for what they wanted and the way they wanted it prepared. It is a place where we felt very welcomed.

Just like the rest of Jose Ignacio, it is unpretentious, but a great place in a beautiful setting. Not to mention that is between Marismo and Namm, two of the best restaurants in the whole Punta area... not just Jose Ignacio.

One other good thing about the place is that although it is small there are several types of rooms which is nice if you are travelling with children, especially teenagers. There is a pool, but we only used it very late afternoon as we were almost always at the beach.

My children and I will definitely return. As others have noted you will need a car there.

This is a wonderful romantic get away, if that's your goal I'd recommend staying in this cozy place. Our upstairs room had a large deck, sliding glass doors that allowed an amazing view of the ocean from bed and a shower with a view of the ocean. It also had air conditioning. I am quite sure a downstairs room would have been disappointing. The view from the deck was magnificent! We had lounge chairs to enjoy the evening stars. We didn't realize how far the drive would be to Punta del Este, or the cost of a taxi... I'd recommend renting a car if planning a trip to Punta. Even the walk into Jose Ignacio would be a trek after dinner (I'm guessing 1.5k), but of course would be romantic. We were able to rent the owners car for a reasonable price. We didn't have much contact with the owner, but rather another employee who was delightful. I agree with others who said it was more like a family home...eating dinner while you're trying to enjoy the setting. I found charm in this, but in reality for the price being paid each night it was unprofessional. My low rating is due to the discrepancy in price and quality. But perhaps that's the price of being there in January, not sure.

Azul Marino is outstanding. My partner and I went there for a few days before going to La Barra. The people (Javier and his wife) were so gracious. The setting was unreal and it felt like we were at someone's home. It was peaceful and quiet (not to mention extremely clean.) Javier brought a bottle of wine and cheese moments after our arrival, we sat in the back on our private porch, and just enjoyed the scenery. Every morning, breakfast (fresh coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice, cut up fresh fruit, home-made croissants, bread, etc.) It was cozy and will definitely be on our return list. Additionally, it is located directly in the middle of two OUTSTANDING restuarants - Namm and Marismo. These are both must-eats.

Okay, we went with this idea of a romantic getaway in Jose Ignacio, because they say there are no appartment towers and it is very pristine etc.

Be aware that this is VERY removed from ANYTHING. Not to mention the set-up is sketchy.

My husband and I felt like we were intruding on the family's home --- it's more like their summer home and they have meals in the open altogether while we would be sitting at a table in the dining room feeling awkward. I speak spanish and so it wasn't the language barrier.

The owner's dog attacked my husband right in front of him and he did nothing to stop the dog but kept on skimming the pool pretending not to notice. Funny to look back on it but scary at the time.

Then we discovered we could not pay for anything unless we had cash but a taxi would have cost $100 there and back to the nearest bank (easily a two hour trip). We asked if we could rent his car to get to the bank machine, he tried to con us into paying the entire week for his car vs one day to get to the bank and finally we decided against that. He was so rude and unhelpful that we decided we should leave.

We wasted an entire day trying to catch a bus and going from town to town to find a working bank machine. BRING CASH IN THEIR CURRENCY. We finally got money and decided to check in to a hotel in La Barra, a great little town.

When we tried to leave he said we would still have to pay for the additional nights we were not staying...we ended up paying and leaving anyways because the vibe was so bad.

The place is nice looking though, no tv's or airconditioning though. But nice, airy rooms with doors that open to the yard.
