“Great stay!”
Reviewed November 4, 2013

We stayed at Posada Arenas for three nights before the high season begun in Uruguay and we have a delightful time there! Very close by to Jose Ignacio, this small hotel run by the architect who designed it has everything to make you enjoy your stay. Since we were the only guests at the hotel at the time we got an upgrade to a better room and the owner and the staff went over the edge to make us feel at home. We had some issues with one of the showers but was fixed right away.

The breakfast (served at the common area) was very good and we even got to bring our own meat to have it cooked one of the nights (since it was low season many restaurants were not open and was not that easy to eat out!). We also borrowed some bikes one of the afternoons to go around.

The Inn is minutes away from the beach so the location is very convenient although you need a car to move around since it is not in the town of Jose Ignacio but close by. We have some difficulties finding the hotel the first day since there is no sign on the main road but it was actually partially our fault for not understanding the directions given on the website properly (when you reach km 185 of Route 10 make a left -if you are coming from Jose Ignacio- and then continue 150 m -you would be leaving the beach behind you until you come across it on the right side of the road).

Room Tip: We were given the Benetti Room (No. 4) and Room No. 2. Both very nice although room 2 turned out to...

This charming posada or country inn is well located near the small Uruguayan beach resort of Jose Ignacio. The small hostelry is run by the architect who designed the property and his daughter. The rooms are clean, light, modern and near the open lobby, bar, veranda and pool areas. The inn is minutes from a broad, sweeping Atlantic beach, the village of Jose Ignacio and accessible to at least four excellent restaurants. Staff is very accommodating and can arrange wine tastings and recommend other attractions in the area. My wife and I were there in March, 2013 near the end of the local season. The posada's ambiance invites lingering over breakfast, coffee or drinks. A very relaxing environment just an hour beyond busy Punta del Estes. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: You'll have less foot traffic if you rquest one of the rooms in the back facing the front of the...

Spent two nights in Posada Arenas in Jose Ignacio, and found it to be a great, reasonably priced option in Jose Ignacio. It's not right in the town, so you'll need a car to get around to good restaurants and other spots. The hotel itself is nicely designed, with lots of nice places to lounge. The beds are comfortable, the breakfast nice (medialunas, toast, fruit, yogurt, decent coffee, and freshly squeezed o.j.), and the owners incredibly nice and helpful.

The only small issues I might mention are: 1- the hotel's roof seemed a bit creaky, which might be a problem if you're a very light sleeper. (I am, but it wasn't a big problem.) And 2 - there were lots of flies the weekend I was there... Probably not too much that can be done about that, but some fly traps might have helped make sitting outside even more pleasant.

I'll definitely stay here again the next time I'm in Jose Ignacio. It strikes just the right balance between modern and cozy... making for a nice relaxing atmosphere in a great location.

We booked the Posada Arenas based on the reviews here at Tripadvisor after a disappointing experience at a nearby hotel. Since we are not the "standard" travelers, we were pleased to find that this property met all of our needs with only minor drawbacks.

First, the hotel itself is attractive - designed by the owners and kept up nicely. There are two wings of two floors, each room with a shared porch/balcony as well as a private one on the opposite side. Hammocks beckon along the edge of the porch - one for each room - hung where they catch maximum rays.

The staff - the owner's family and a few local employees - are old hands at making you feel like you've lived here your whole life. They were far more solicitous than the "norm" in Uruguay: helping us book our next hotel, arranging a carriage ride at a nearby olive grove, setting up a clothesline for my hand-washing, and watching our daughter so we could have a romantic dinner.

The rooms are reasonably-sized, clean, and air-conditioned. Bathrooms were comparable to other Uruguay hotels. They provide a good-sized mini-fridge to store snacks and drinks (easy to pick up a few blocks away) and also offer meals to order at reasonable prices.

Breakfast is included in the rates and is typical of Uruguay hotels - pastries, toast, juice, yogurt, etc.

Location - This hotel is outside of the main Jose Ignacio area, which gets you away from the crowds if you are there in the high season. It's only 3-4 minutes to town by car though, so it would be a reasonable distance if you wanted to bike (the hotel offers bikes for guest use). There are also beach towels, chairs and umbrellas available for guests to use.

Most restaurants are in town, but 1-2 minutes up the street is Marismo's, one of the trendier restaurants in the area.

As for beaches, you can either walk down the street to the one nearby, or drive/bike to any of the ones around Jose Ignacio. Note that the beach nearer the hotel was very private, we only saw a few other people, but the water was rougher than the beaches in town for swimming.

The few drawbacks:
There is usually Wi-Fi in the lobby but coverage is not good in the rooms. To their credit, they were happy to reset the router repeatedly, called the cable guy to check the connection, and generally seemed to be working on the problem.

Bugs in the pool. Harmless water bugs, but they made my skin crawl and scared my daughter. There were hundreds the first day, but a few remained even after the pool was cleaned our second day.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main building get sun all afternoon, rooms in the second wing are more private.

Absolutely enjoyed our stay at Posada Arenas - there's not much to add to other positive reviews of this delightful little place. Close to everything, only steps away from the beach, friendly and very helpful staff, great design of the property.

It was for me. A very, very special place. The owner apparently designed and built this posada, and it has an open feel with light and windows and decks, while maintaining complete privacy. Sometimes one finds old comfort and grace in new designs and space, and the Posada Arenas has done it, I believe. I drove about 6 hours from Colonia, through the crowded city of Punta del Este, and was pretty strung out by the time I reached this oasis. Within an hour, after a swim in the ocean and the nice little pool they have, I was quite relaxed. I was treated like an old friend from hello, and we played lots of good music, drank well, ate great food, and sat around the pool and had easy conversation. The stars came out, and there was the Southern Cross. Eventually I fell asleep to the sound of the surf in the distance. Woke up refreshed and had wonderful pastries and coffee, and then sadly had to go back home. Thank you, friends.

i'm having the time of my life at the coolest posada in uruguay!
start with a super coplete complimentary breakfast, then dive into a pristine lap pool or into the oceanic beach, a 5 minute walk away.

after a lunch based on very inspired local cuisine, take a siesta in one of the hanging hamacas & then u r ready for some serious exercise: tai chi taught by the multi talented architect/owner or my personal favorite: borrow a bycicle from the friendly staff & bike to the village, probably the most sophisticated pueblo by the sea u are gonna find in south america.

after dinner relax by the firepit before u retire to ur very spacious room.
WELL DONE FERNANDO & ESTHER!!!!!!!!!!
I DON'T WANNA LEAVE!!!!!!!!!!!
