Seems to have come under new ownership recently from an Engineering company who have invested in a refurbishment of the central dining and bar area. Need to spend some money on the rooms now as they are pretty tired. Gets pretty cold at night at this altitude so pyjamas and socks might be needed even with the double blankets. Food and service both good. Recommended as a base from where to explore the stunning Bale Mountains National Park.

There isn't anywhere else to stay so one night is a must if you want to see the Bale Mountains and the wildlife - which we did and were delighted. The Hotel however is from a bygone era and needs a major workout. Saying that we moved rooms - three times - think we ended up in 32 which was larger and lighter than the others we had been shown. Shower okay in the end and loo flushed - slept well but was happy to leave. The staff were very friendly, particularly man at reception and lady in the restaurant. Food so so but veal excellent. Breakfast okay. Satellite TV in room and reception. Ask for extra towels at reception.

This old hotel is OK but nothing more.
As said, it is the only option.
Food is without nice taste. Rooms are clean and in the seventies style.
All is done in the same way as 17 years before in these governemental hotels.
You have the impression to go back in the time.

If you're visiting the Bale Mountains, you will probably end up having to stay here. It's not horrendous, but, as so often in Ethiopia, it disappoints and depresses, and they could do so much better with some expertise, and some effort. We had The Saloon, a really nice, large room with a separate sitting area, and 1950s style wood panelling. It was reasonably clean, and there was just enough hot water to fill a shallow bath. At our first breakfast I was somewhat startled to be told that the hotel had 'run out' of coffee. At subsequent breakfasts, we endured what was undoubtedly the worst coffee in the country, and took to going out to the Waakaa bhuna cafe in town for a fabulous macchiatto. Service was chaotic and complacent, with one or two more committed individuals trying desperately to impose some order and provide some service. Loud and intrusive televisions in the bar and reception hardly added to a bleak environment reminiscent of school field trips to youth hostels in the 1960s. We ordered off-menu for dinner and had superb Ethiopian fasting-food selections.

Room Tip: Go for The Saloon (room 3)

I stayed here for two nights. The rooms were small and very basic, and the beds were not very comfortable. The restaurant was so dark that you could hardly read the menu, but there was in any case only a very limited and not very appealing choice. However, you could order some things which were not on the menu (which is how I came to have omelettes for five meals in succession). So it definitely has its drawbacks, but it is the only possible hotel for visiting the Bale area.

Stayed for 3 nights, first night in a twin room for 450 birr a night, but one of us got bitten by fleas. the second night we took the so called Salon (apparently built for Colonel Mengistu during the Derg) which cost 609 birr but very large, much nicer bathroom
It was not really dirty, but the carpets have probably not been cleaned in years.

They provide a good full breakfast included in the room price. The hotel staff are nice, when the room was not ok, they helped us find a better one.

Since there is not other better place in the Bale mountains, so I would recommend the hotel.

This is the only hotel in the area. It located a little out of twon and the grounds are fairly extensive. The hotel is run down. The room that we had was clean but very spartan. The beds looked horrible (sway-backed) but actually were quite comfortable. While the room had an on-demand water heater it tended not to work. It would throw the circuit at odd moments so you were never sure if you would have hot water. They had a great coffee machine for espresso etc. The beer was cold. Restaurant was okay but due to the fairly low occupancy rate the menu was generally limited to 2 or 3 items for dinner. The staff was very good

Room Tip: They all seem to be the same
