“Very Nice, Beautiful garden & pool, we will go back again”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2010

We extended 4 extra days and happily stayed there. Its off the beaten path, quiet, on a nice small beach, has a beautiful garden and swimming pool. 2 miles from the airport, toward the French side but still on Dutch side. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
We would definately go back to Ocean Club to the villas by the pool. The tower aparts were OK, but they had to move us from there to a better studio villa because the air conditioners were not working properly in the tower. They told us they are renovating very soon, with upgrades to furniture, facillities, etc.
The bar / snack bar was good, resonable priced and very good food, the MauiMaui was great. But, it closed for the summer during the week we were there. Too bad, there is not too much to walk to from there. The parking was very good, under cover, out of the sun, a BIG plus.
There is a very small convience store next door at the Saphire that had everything we needed in a hurry. The new "Market Garden" grocery store at Simpson Bay just east of the draw bridge was very nice, had everything, reasonable prices, good beer and rum prices.
The road in the area was under constrution, very narrow and bad to drive thru, but should be about finished as we speak.
Again, we will happily go back there and take our family!

First, let me help with some of my own confusion about what these are...there are essentially two properties called Ocean Club at Cupecoy. One is the villas and the other is the apartments. The apartments are in a 5-6 story tower and the villas are more like condos that you're probably accustomed to.

We stayed at the villas (Unit 18R), a 1-br facing the pool. It's accessible through a common exterior door shared by 3 units, with 1 downstairs and the other 2 up a spiral starcase. The exterior of this unit faces the street (Rhine Road), which does have some construction noise, but it didn't bother us much. The inside wall faces a very nicely maintained pool area.

It was a good value, price-wise, but no better than we could have gotten at other properties through RCI. Also, be prepared (we were) for a $50/week resort fee and a $90 energy surcharge in addition to the cost of the unit. This is common in St. Maarten.

It was pretty spacious for a 1-BR. The balcony was huge--15'x7' and the pool view is nice. You also get a peek through the other units at the ocean.

Staff was friendly. They had done some refurbishing, although pretty uneven. For example, inside the front door of the common entrance, the fusebox had no door, the patio light was a bare bulb, and the toaster oven and microwave were VERY dated. The toaster oven had two settings--on or off, and with either the top heating element or both the top and bottom on. The microwave worked, but the controls were off-kilter (you had to press "stop" to get it to start). The 2-burner cooktop worked but looked like something from the 1950s. Refrigerator was small but worked well. Dishwasher, countertop and dishes were new.

Exterior of the unit had been freshly painted, which was nice.

Bed was a little hard but comfortable enough. Bathroom was HUGE, with a bidet and a tub that was at least 5 feet deep, plus a normal shower, double sink and toilet. Amenities were included, and maid service was good (daily).

Restaurant/bar open at the pool from 11am-9pm with daily drink specials for $4 and happy hour 5pm-630pm daily. Tuesday all-you-can-eat ribs for $12. The do room service from the restaurant.

Complimentary huge, fluffy beach towels.

A/C worked well, but remember the temps there are in Celsius and the a/c works off a remote control. Ceiling fan helps, too.

Other furnishings were very dated (sofa sleeper and loveseat). Cable tv with CNN plus CBS and NBC from NYC. Battery cover missing from the remote, but it worked.

You have a reserved parking space, which is nice, and it's actually large enough for a Hyundai Accent, if your neighbor can park straight and you pull in the outside mirrors.

Reported that the bathroom window wouldn't close, since utilities are so high there, but there was no response the entire week. We kept the bathroom door closed and scotched with a washcloth to keep it from rattling with the breezes, and we stuffed a towel under the door to keep the warmer air out.

They're trying, based on some of the other reviews, and it IS St. Maarten, so our expectations were not too high. It's not unacceptable, but if you can get another property, you'd probably be better off. We stayed at the Pelican in July 2009 and it was great (infinitesimal parking spaces notwithstanding).

When we were there at the end of June 2009, there weren't a lot of people staying therefore it was really quite and peaceful. The pool is beautiful and the rooms are big, clean and cozy. The tub in the bathroom is the biggest I have ever seen especially in a rental unit before.
The only thing that was disappointing is their website advertises a cafe on site, but when we arrived we came to find out that this cafe will be closed till October or November sometime. They need to update this information on their website. Also there is no free wireless, you have to pay for it by the week.

Had an issue with exposed electrical. Rooms are nice and had almost every thing you will need. There is nothing happening in the resort itself. No bar or place to pick up incidentals. You will always need to go next store if you want a drink. They did not clean the pool very much. Staff was OK. Beach is very close; however, the tide is a little rough on this beach. The first day we attemped to go to the beach there was a gentleman laying there fully nude. Not to nice for a 9 year old. If you have a rental car, watch out there is a scam going on the island and a few bad apples are destroying the locks on the vehicles and stealing the spare tires and trying to make the tourist pay for it.

We are Hilton Grand Vacation members and we chose to take a family vacation through a rci resort in St. Martin. This was the choice since they could accomodate 3 bedrooms. We repeatedly tried to call and get confirmation on the type of place we were going to be staying but even though we placed several phone calls we couldn't confirm anything other than the fact that we had 3 bedrooms. When we got there, there was food in the fridge, no batteries in the 2 out of 3 remotes, the one phone didn't work and the rooms where hot. We arrive around 3 or 4 pm and wanted to get the place ready for the other family members arriving later. When they finally found someone to come up and address our issues it was the security guard who cleaned the fridge, replaced the phone, cleaned the very dirty vents so that air could blow freely and we were told that batteries and or extra remotes could be gotten from the front desk. After several batteries and trying different remotes we finally found some that worked. The front desk staffed was indifferent to our trying to be comfortable on our vacation. The desk clerk did let us know that they were a privately owned facility so I guess whatever amenities we were used to getting... forget about it. This is the place to be if you want a bed, shower and somewhere to cook. If you want more than that... looks elsewhere. There was not restuarant on site and the rental car that we got was dirty inside. We needed extra towels and we were told to go and get them from one of the housekeepers in the laundry site down in the garage. The sand was harsh and sticky on the Cupecoy Beach and it was seemed to have eroded away more so than in the advertised picture. This is an older facility with nothing special about it.

My husband and I had two weeks at this resort . We were in two different accommodations. Week one we were in a one bedroom facing the pool, and week two we were in a two bedroom ocean front villa, primarily due to a booking error made by the resort. The resort has three types of accommodations. There are about 20 villas surrounding the pool. Our building had a one bedroom unit on the first floor, and a one bedroom and a studio unit on the second floor. To get to the second floor, you have to walk up a high, narrow spiral staircase. Not good for heavy luggage or weak knees.

The unit was very clean. The furniture was tired. There was a bare minimum of cooking items in a small kitchen area. The bedroom is separated from the living room by a partial wall with a door. This would not be comfortable for two couples. The bathroom was marble and large, although the shower was small, and there was a hugh, at least 100 gallons, soaking tub, which we did not use.

Towels were changed daily. Air conditioning was run by a card, and there was no problem leaving it on all day, even when we weren't there.

The property has been recently painted on the exterior. There were adequate chairs around the pool

The second type of accommodation is the apartment building next to the villas. This is the building the check-in office is in. There are several floors of apartments, and three penthouse units. The oceanfront penthouse unit is privately owned. We were supposed to have the three bedroom penthouse unit facing the road for our second week, as we had friends coming down. However, there was someone in that unit who wasn't checking out until the end of the weekend, and they offered us one of the ocean front villas instead.

There are 8 ocean front villas. They are privately owned, and some are rented out by the owners. We were in number 8. It was very large, nicely kept, and a pleasure to be there. This villa was a two bedroom, with very large marble bathrooms, and a beautiful kitchen. There was also a spiral staircase in the unit, but larger than the other unit.

In number 8, the microwave oven didn't work, and the coffe maker didn't work. They immediately brought us new appliances, and took care of any other issues we had. All the employees were very nice. We were assessed an additional energy fee for each unit, based on the size of the unit.

There are no planned activities at this resort. None. We walked over to the Sapphfire Resort to use their bar, store, etc. We ate out most nights. The area is being built up slowly, and there are several high end restauants nearby. The Cupecoy Market has nice deli, wine, breakfast, coissants, etc. We mostly drove to Mullet Bay beach, parked along the street, rented our own chairs and umbrellas, and spent the day at the beach. There are other very small beaches in Cupecoy, most are nude or topless beaches.

While this resort might not be our first choice to stay at again, we prefer the Cupecoy/Mullet Bay area, and would stay here if we couldn't go elsewheres.

We just returned from a week in St. Maarten, staying at the Ocean Club. The studio was spacious and inside was nice, but the outside of the buildings could use some work. The partial kitchen (no oven) was helpful to keep dining out costs down, but you cannot keep the A/C on all day or you will be charged. The pool bar/restaurant was never open while we were there. The beach was fantastic though. If you are looking for a place to use as a base for exploring the beaches and the island, then this place would work, but it is not for those expecting luxury.

The beach was never crowded, and we only saw one person go "clothing optional."
