“Superb food, truly Italian with exceptional flavours”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2013

Our family of 4 were looking for a high-quality Italian restaurant in Cupecoy area, and my son suggested La Gondola which was nearby our hotel. Although the decor outside seemed dated and uninspired, which made us wonder about the quality of the food, we gave it a try at my son's insistence ...never judge a book by its cover, because the food was amazing food, far better than we had expected, and the service was exceptional. We actually ate there twice because the food was very good. We ordered the linguini with whole shrimps, the rigatoni with ricotta (exactly like the way I make it at home - we're Italian) and the lobster ravioli --all excellent. Chef Michele Di Napoli came out to introduce himself (a very nice gesture) and we spoke in Italian. He explained how true Italian food must be prepared simply and to bring out all the flavours of the ingredients, rather than just smothered in heavy sauce and topped off with meatballs...absolutely true! Italian traditional cooking is never laden with heavy, chunky sauces that would mask the meal. We returned a second time, and Chef Michele prepared an outstanding meal for our family, as a special favor. We enjoyed the pappardelle with lamb ragout (extremely delicious) and the risotto with scallops and asparagus - I think this was the best risotto I have ever tasted. To finish off this memorable meal, we had the innovative "island-inspired" Tiramisu made with coconut cream and liqueur in place of coffee liqueur...it was served on a beautiful plate made of black slate, and was as delicious as it looked - I prefer this flavour than the regular Tiramisu anyday! The manager of the restaurant was also exceptionally nice to talk with, and paid great attention to us. We plan to return to Cupecoy for vacation, and we hope to dine at La Gondola again and experience Chef Michele's fine cooking.

“There are better Italian restaurants”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 18, 2013

We ate here after a fellow guest at our hotel told us It was great. We were disappointed overall. Appetizers were pretty good, but the entrees really lacked. As a chef and ex restauranteur, I could see the chef was trying to get away from traditional Italian swimming in sauce, but it didn't work. The Garlic Shrimp Pasta, Linguine in Clam Sauce, and Penne with Sausage all had little or no sauce to speak of. The Penne especially was dry and the al dente noodles had huge shavings of Parmesan grated over them, adding to the dry texture. The only sauce was a touch of olive oil and little else. I get what they are trying to do but pasta needs sauce, even a light one. Service was uninspired- considering that there were only three tables occupied it should have been better. I had high hopes for La Gondola but left feeling let down.

“Disappointment”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2013

Food was subpar. Ordered chicken parm and lobster ravioli. Chicken Parm tasted like something I couldn't whipped up in 10 minutes (not a chef). Lobster ravioli was extremely salty. Service was fine, but food was a big thumbs down. Not uneatable or anything like that. But, not what I would recommend spending money on.

“Terrific Italian Restaurant on St. Maarten”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 17, 2013

We dined at La Gondola in Cupecoy during a recent trip to St. Maarten. Shortly after ordering our drinks, Chef Michele came to introduce himself to us. Since my wife had lived in Naples, Italy, and that is where the chef is from, we enjoyed a nice conversation about food and Italy. After talking to him about some of the pasta dishes on the menu, we ordered several pastas to share.

The pappardelle with lamb ragout was outstanding--the lamb was very tender and flavorful. Next we tried the penne with salcicce and mushrooms, which was a simple and tasty dish. The last dish that we had was the monkfish and paccheri pasta. The monkfish is stronger tasting than what I'm used to, but the sauce balanced it out nicely.

To end our meal, Chef Michele told us that he had a special dessert, which is a twist on the traditional tiramisu--he uses a coconut liqueur instead of espresso, and coconut in place of cocoa. It was outstanding! My wife would fly back to St. Maarten just for this dessert!

We highly recommend La Gondola. Our only regret is that we were only able to dine there once.
