“All about the Estetics”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2008

This trip and stay was a anniversary surprise for my Wife.
We have stayed in many various hotels /resorts over the years and I have a few constructive observations to comment on.
Overall the Irwin Inn is a beautiful location and is very rustic in its setting.
The rooms (we stayed in the newest section) section are generally clean and well presented.
Little details such as repairs not completed ie hole in bathroom and wall patch in bedroom take a little away from the quality as well some of the detail finishing with tile and door jambs.
The food was very good, well prepared and presented.
The service was very prompt and professional.
That being said looking out the windows over the water and looking through windows that appear have not been cleaned in a while along with general exterior painting maintenance that is lacking takes away from the overall ambience of the dining experience.
All individuals we dealt with on site were very friendly,and more than willing to answer any questions that were asked of them.
Top marks for the service and Staff.
Overall a nice spot, but definately not a high end resort and addressing the small estetics throughout both interior and exterior areas would go along way to improving the experience and quality of the Inn.

  • Liked — Scenery
  • Disliked — Lack of variety with menu...could reduce operating expense if offered some basic menu options for adults and children.

The Irwin Inn is a good place to stay if you don't mind:

- what another reviewer aptly termed "rec room decor";
- bug-invested accomodation (a non-too fresh fly swatter is thoughtfully provided by the Inn and left for guest use atop the in-accomodations refigerator);
- an unhealthy diet for your children (nothing but bread and buttered noodles on offer at dinner - no carrot sticks, cucumber slices, fresh fruit, kid friendly chicken or other source of protein);
- a property that's devoid of attempts at beautification;
- plastic beach chairs coated in black dirt/mould, staining your clothing/swimsuit, and yet a pleasure to sit in if you can get your hands on one because there are only six of them at the lake;
- the owners' off-leash dog defecating freely over the beach and grounds and swimming (with no human escort within sight or earshot) within a meter of terrorized toddlers;
- being seated at every meal directly atop full-blast air conditioning vents that serve the entire restaurant and having your requests to be relocated fall on deaf ears because "most people like to sit at the same table throughout their stay" and "sorry we can't turn the vents off because those cold air shoots you're sitting on cool the whole place"
- dining in a ghettoized, run-down, fly-ridden, low-ceilinged tack-on to the main dining room that's partitioned off by plexi-glass while other guests dine on the "other side" (and again being prohibited from moving at future meals from the table you were unwilling assigned at the first meal);
- a children's program that starts with videos directly after breakfast on rainy days, presumably on the basis that it takes less effort than crafts or going outside with eager children equipped with rubber boots and raincoats;
- being told by the owner to vacate your dining table shortly before 8:30 pm (yes, 8:30 pm) so they can set the table for breakfast;
- being awakened by a preset (presumably by previous guests) clock radio at 6:40 a.m.
- rusted, unmaintained bicycles - flat tires and all
- an overcrowded "sports field" which is too small and with inadequate facilities for the volume of guests on weekends; at the least the owners could make both shuffleboard courts useable (one of the two is unmarked, delapitated and without cues and pucks) so more guests might get a chance to play
- packing your own toiletries, hairdryer, beach towels etc.
- repeatedly asking the dining room staff for milk for the children's cereal and juice of any kind during a breakfast buffet underway for an hour without any of these basic items;
- the humourous exercise of completing a survey a check-out, so you can commit to print the comments and requests that were ignored during your stay.

  • Liked — Stoney Lake is beautiful; we will visit again but stay at one of the other resorts. The young women who ran the children's program were great with kids and very friendly. Not their choice to call movies an activity.
  • Disliked — The disregard. Maybe the owners would benefit from visiting places like Arowhon Pines or the family-run Killarney Lodge.

The Irwin Inn experience is like none other I have ever had before !! It truly was like a weekend away with my best friends.. from the moment we arrived we were treated like family and provided with every amenity you could imagine !

The location, the food, the hospitality and the rooms are out of this world ! It is so rare in this fast paced impersonal world in which we live, to be greeted by the owners and taken care of like their own family.

We continue to return to The Irwin Inn every chance we get .. and each visit reveals something new and charming we did not discover previously.

We would highly recommend that you discover and revel in the joy that is so abundant at The Irwin Inn!!

  • Liked — The incredible caring family atmosphere
  • Disliked — not being able to stay for a whole week !!

My husband and I decided to stay at the Irwin Inn for a romantic getaway. Upon arrival we were escorted to our beautiful cabin with a private pool and hot tub. We were very pleased, however, that night we went to turn on the air conditioner because it was such a warm night but it was not working. The next morning when we brought this forward to the staff, they came with a window unit that was not suited for the types of windows in our cabin. Therefore, we had an air conditioner that barely worked and only heated our bedroom and left the rest of the house incredibly hot. We had also set up to go horseback riding while there and booked a day but were called that morning and told we could not go. The next day it rained so we could not go and then the following day we were leaving and we were able to go just as we were leaving. It was quite a disappointment to drive home smelling like horse and we were even more angry when we found out that the reason why our riding was canceled was because someone came in off the street to horseback ride and they took them over us.

The good news was that the pool was lovely and we had a great view of the lake and woods beside us. The food was UNBELIEVABLY fantastic and they were incredibly accommodating to dietary needs. The place is quite ran down and could have used some updating but it was not incredibly horrible.

  • Liked — food, private heated pool
  • Disliked — no air conditiong and being passed over for horseback riding

My husband and I stayed at the Irwin Inn for our 5th anniversary and we booked a cottage with its own pool. The cottage was absolutely perfect and that was where it stopped. The meals were just okay - but the service was substandard at best. You could manage to get a drink with your meal, but you were never offered another one, nor did the waitress come around so you could order one. I guess this was one way of saving money. We also really wanted to go on a cruise of the lake, but were told that they weren't doing it anymore. 2 hours later, we saw the boat leaving full of people. We were very dissapointed about this, as this was our 1st time in this area and we really would have liked to see the lake. We tried to get a couples message while we were there, but there weren't any available, and as we were there during the week, there weren't too many people there. As I said, the cottage was perfect and we pretty much stayed in our cottage and our pool for the 4 days that we were there. It was a very expensive few days for lousy service. Would I go back? No - not with all of the other Muskoka resorts that have incredible service.

Stayed at the Irwin Inn August 19 - 24, 2007.
Had a great time ~ kids loved playing on the beach, doing crafts, walking to the stables to feed the horses, playing at the playground, swimming in the pool, soaking in the hot tub, boating, tubing, etc, etc.
The food was amazing and had a nice selection at the buffet and a la carte.
Staff was friendly and helpful - very clean room ( stayed in Lower Stoney )
Had a great time and would highly recommend for a wonderful family vacation.

We stayed at the Irwin Inn in August of 2006 and found it amazing!!! It is very family oriented with plenty to do for the kids. The food was amazing (athough, as already said, the breakfasts left a little to be desired). The staff was very helpful and accomodating. We met so many nice families that we have already reserved for the same time this year. If you enjoy a relaxed enviroment with none of the snobishness that you get at other resorts then the Irwin Inn is the place for you!
