“charming but...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2013

I personally found this a charming hotel, a little old fashioned, but in the odd way, like my grandmother's place in the old times: huge ceilings, painted furniture, boxes or rather baskets for sewing material. My daughter thought the old doll hanging on the wall was scary, but anyway, these are details. What mattered was that we couldn't sleep during a whole night because they gave us the room on the first floor at the street, and there is a new bar across the street which causes the hotel a lot of trouble: they even rang the police. Music until 5 in the morning, and afterwards people talking in groups on the street until 7 (!) in the morning! And considering the single glazing in Chile... Anyway, we complained and they gave us another room for our 2nd night. And second problem in the first room was indeed the smell of sewerage, very strong... And breakfast is average.

Room Tip: Do not take the room at the front!!

We loved this place. Others have remarked about its beautiful courtyard. But the breakfasts were incredible, the location, in the center of town, walking distance to the Gabriela Mistral museum, was not to be missed. The staff was extremely kind and helpful. Although an older hotel, it had a great deal of character and its price was reasonable.

We stayed one night, which was plenty. The building itself is characterful but needs some maintenance work. We had cold showers and there was also a bad smell coming from the drain in the bathroom. The staff on duty seemed very cold (like the showers) and didn't seem interested in trying to turn up the water temperature.

The WIFI didn't work and the breakfast was poor.

Expensive for what it is, given all the problems we experienced.

Room Tip: Room one = cold shower + smelly drain

This is a rather special hotel in Vicuñia.
An old, traditional building near the centre of town, the old facade hides a charming courtyard/garden with the bedrooms off in the traditional style of the area. I understand it was at one time a convent and that the current breakfast room was the dining hall.
The rooms are cool and comfortable and tastefully furnished .... in an appropriate style. The beds are comfortable and the shower is fine.
Further through the premesis is a garden with a pool ...... not huge, but nicely adequate for a plunge on a hot day (of which there are many in Vicuñia).
The breakfast is average ..... but for $34000, its a very good value place to stay. This was our fourth visit.

US$65/night
1 night
Very old, clean but neglected hotel which has not seen any updating in many years, was afraid the floors were going to fall through in the bedroom, also the back patio where swimming pool is looked like the grass had not been cut in a very long time.
Breakfast was rolls, cheese, jam, juice and instant coffee.
Located in town, close to a number of low-priced restaurants.
Highlight of area is tour of a meteorological observatory each night. Vicuna Is a 30 minute bus ride from La Serena.

Hotel Halley is a charming retreat from the heat and bustle of Vicuna. The rooms all face onto the beautiful, flower filled courtyard and are full of character with iron bed frames and wooden furniture. Excellent showers in small, but very clean, bathrooms. The garden at the rear of the hotel has a lovely pool and is a great place to unwind and relax. It's true that a little "refreshing" wouldn't go amiss in some places but the character of the hotel is what makes it so special. There is no restaurant but Club Social (on the other side of the road back towards Plaza de Armas) is fantastic.

We loved this place, it's a small hotel located very close to the center of Vicuña, a little town in the North part of Chile, away from real big cities. It's a charming old house, and every room had character. Iron bed frames, crochetted beadspreads, even Vanity accessories like bowls and bottles. You think you're in another era when walking in the rooms, except for electronic devices such as tv's and radios.
Service was top quality, the lady at the frontdesk was very polite and helpful, and even called overseas to help us with our lost credit card.
The house needs work indeed, some investment here and there. Also more advertising and a proper website.
