Description: The Taubenkobel restaurant is one of the best in the country. And for those who are hesitant to enter such spheres, the light version in the form of a pretty bistro is just the ticket. Unique in the world: a cosmopolitan haven in a small village in Burgenland. When crossing the threshold of taubenkobel it is clear that its owners have created an unique atmosphere, a cosmopolitan haven in a small village in Burgenland, half an hour away from Vienna. This charming 19th century vintner's house is dedicated not only to well-being but also to the appreciation of art and the surrounding nature. Add to this the remarkable cuisine of the Grand Chef Walter Eselbock and his son-in-law Alain Weissgerber who masterfully craft local products into sophisticated creations. Eveline Eselbock will enchant you with her selection of wines. Barbara Eselbock, daughter of Eveline and Walter, will welcome you with her charming attitude. 11 Individual rooms and suites which are lovingly equipped with selected furniture and accessories from all over the world will make you feel like staying at a good old friends house. An outdoor natural pool, the enchanted garden, a sauna and an additional more casual restaurant the "Greisslerei" will round off your stay.

We were there twice, first time in September, the last weekend with nice weather, in the garden. Sunday = no lunch or dinner but somewhat in between, it was nice that there was no set time, we had the (only) menu that promised 2 hours of enjoyment, and it delivered exactly that. We had our nearly 4 year old daughter with us, which was no problem (much appreciated, it's not always easy to get accepted to good restaurants with a child, for obvious reasons).
Second time with friends, we took the weekend package - menu plus one hotel night from sunday to monday.
In both cases the food was exactly what you would expect from such a highly rated restaurant - creative, surprising, superb quality.
Service was very good both times, with the second time - less guests - very personal attention, every question we had was answered by a young German lady with the right balance between professional and friendly.
The rooms are in old barns, very tastefully decorated, very individual.
The breakfast was brilliant, it's not every day that you can get breakfast at a 2-star, and it was again the best ingredients.
This weekend package (dinner plus one night at 200 EURO per person, plus wine) is really excellent value for money, I can warmly recommend it. I will certainly repeat it, romantic weekend with my wife or bring friends there...

Last Saturday was very hot day, so we went to swim in Neusiedl See. Once we had enough I felt like trying some decent restaurant in nearby area and found on-line the Taubenkobel, place that was supposed to earn a Michelin star.
since we were going directly from the lake we were really not dressed properly for a grand dining, but on the another hand it was only 5,30pm.
Once we have arrived to the restaurant and I saw the settings I have specifically asked whether our dress is alright. (I was wearing swim shorts, so I would understand if we would get refused)
Nevertheless we have got seated and started to get excited about the 11-course degustation menu that was supposed to come.
Since we arrived without reservation I was made aware that they will need our table at 8pm.
So far everything was just fine. The waitress very professional, the food for my taste too complex - see the attached menu.
The problems started when we were asked before 7pm whether we would mind if they would re-seat us. Before we got re-seated the waitress ask us whether we are smokers or non-smokers.
Despite my answer that we do not smoke we were seated in sort of a bar part of the restaurant with smoking couple. Another thing what has happened was that we started to be completely ignored by the waiters. Like I had to specifically ask for the wine to accompany the food (i have ordered menu with wine pairing), or to get glasses refiled.
The whole experience has started to turn into quite some disappointment. In order do not to make any scandal I got up and caught the older lady - apparently mother of on of the restaurant supervisors - outside of the dining room. I calmly told her about my concerns, asked her why the level of service has got so much worse, why we were re-seated one hour earlier, why I am not getting my wine with the food and once more asked her about my concern that perhaps the were really under-dressed. I was told that everything is fine and only reason is bad weather and guest with reserved tables coming earlier. Since last 45minutes were really spoiling our evening I have simply asked for the bill. The bill came with list of dishes we have tried. From there I understood that in-deed I was supposed to get wine pairing also with main desert and perhaps also the wine with the cheese wasn't alright as it was like unfiltered and for 2008 vintage it was rather surprising. As a result I have asked the lady when she was picking up my credit which part of the menu I do not understand as it is saying that I am supposed to get something different that I am getting + I am being charged for items I didn't get.
Once she was bringing back my credit card with the final bill, that reached well over 300 EUR she slammed it on the table and yelled at me in front of my girlfriend that me and not the close are the problem...

Tu sum it up. This place is highly recommended if you feel like you want to be yelled at, if you enjoy to be cheated and make looking as a fool in front of your partner.

Now finally to the food.
The cousine was generally very interesting. Part of the dishes were too complex for my taste - like accompanied with smoke from closed glass - in order to increase the experience, or with burning spray of rosemary, but generally I got to taste quite a few interesting combinations from high class ingredients.
To bad that the only memory that will stay will be the rude and unprofessional waitress. Even if I would be some idiot who is making troubles and do not know how to behave I still shouldn't be treated the way as I have experienced it at Taubenkobel.

This was one of the highlights of our trip. The gardens and suites provide an oasis. The restaurant was one of highest level we have ever experienced. Aside from the innovative food pairings, we found the entire staff to be most professional while friendly. Clearly, the staff enjoys its work.

We stopped here amid some hectic touring [between Vienna and Budapest] and it was a perfect rest.

Through the different guides this shoud be one of the best restaurants in Austria, but... Not for us ! Not profesional service, wine card don't have the best Burgenland wines (!!!), food also ( we eat gourmet menu for 118 € ) nothing special. Comparing with Steireck Wien, Hubertus Filzmoos, Prielau Zell Am Zee, Schlossstern Velden, this restaurant don't deserve second Michelin star !
