“treetops treehouse - magical setting for an escape from real life”
Reviewed August 25, 2014

My family and I spent the August bank holiday weekend in this amazing treehouse. Looking out through the branches of the wonderful old oak was magical. We felt like Roald Dahl's Minpins.

The treehouse is really comfortable and we found the hotel team very helpful and welcoming. We walked and cycled locally, used the barbeque, watched the flames in our stove, soaked in the big bath, watched and listened to the birds, and revelled in having this very special place as our temporary home.

There is lots to do locally and the surrounding countryside and coast are beautiful.

We're already wondering when we can go back.

Room Tip: Go for the treehouse, it was AMAZING.

I have to agree the treehouse offers something totally unique, and it is great to see you made the most of it's amenities whilst still exploring the beauty and variety North Devon offers. We would be delighted to have you back.

We stayed here for one night (but wish it had been for more) for a family wedding which was exquisite. The staff, venue, food, drink and the exceptional on site hair dresser were all excellent. A perfect venue for a happy wedding day in stunning extensive grounds. Thanks for having us and helping the day stay in our memories.

It's so nice that we get to share wedding day's on a weekly basis with the friends and families of our lovely couples. It's always a great atmosphere and we always hope to have you all back again; maybe an anniversary party should be suggested?

We recently stayed here for a friends wedding. In the most part this hotel was 'ok', in fantastic surroundings, close to a train station, plenty of parking, good food and 'some' amazing staff - who really went out or their way for us.

However, we were very disappointed with the lady who 'greeted' us at the desk. Our room was not ready and neither was it going to be ready for quite some time, then a minute later it was (but with no explanation). We were not shown to our room, or even told where it was, just told to "sign here" and handed some room keys. Furthermore, we were not told about the breakfast arrangements. She really was not the right person to greet customers, irrespective of how busy the hotel was - especially when you consider the higher than average room price! We have had a better meet-and-greet at a cheap motor-way service station hostel!

Our room was best described as tired: The header board was very loose (thumping the wall each time I rested my head against it), the shower was a quiet as sitting on the hard shoulder on the M25 in rush hour, the bed was lumpy, the walls were marked and there were no net curtains. For the price, I expect significantly better.

In addition, upon check-out we ended up with a bill £20 higher than we had expected. Some feeble excuse was given about only staying for one day which therefore results in a higher fee!! The advertised rates are apparently displayed, but we did not have time to argue with the seemingly unforgiving and unsympathetic check-out guy.

In summary, you may now understand my title. We have a very polarized opinion of this place - It's best that we advise others to check facts, check their room thoroughly and know what to expect if they choose to stay here.

We might stay again if we were in the area but would probably check other hotels first.

Room Tip: As for a room facing the garden as the windows don't have net curtains - saves the potential of...

Thank you for taking the time to send us a review. I am sorry to learn of your 'polarised' opinion of us. As a rule, we do strive to ensure guests can check in earlier than our guaranteed check in time on a wedding day, and thus are told at random intervals by our housekeeping team when they have managed to get the rooms clean. I can only apologise for the staff as this is a rare depiction of them as we generally pride ourselves on friendly helpful staff. In regards to your bill, we do apologise for any misconceptions or errors on any bills, and this is why we do not charge any of our guests until they are checking out, to ensure they have time to go over the bills. I can only apologise again for your stay and hope this has not put you off coming back to us again.

This is a great hotel; lovely grounds, comfortable rooms and nicely cooked breakfast. Real strength to me though was the staff, who were personable and helpful. We did have a major problem on the first night as our room was very close to the area where a wedding reception was taking place and the noise was really bad and prevented us from sleeping. We had been told there was a wedding and we would be placed away from it, so I assume there was a muddle. We were understandably unhappy but the staff were totally reasonable and understanding and were generous in sorting out the problem. Despite the problem on one night, we would stay again, as the following night was restful and enjoyable. I would always choose a family run hotel, which this is, over a corporate enterprise, and credit the staff in creating a warm and welcoming hotel..

Spent a night there with dinner. The room was spotless with two double beds a lounge area at the end with French doors onto the lawn. Lovely bathroom & shower.
The three course meal was excellent with a good choice although there was a supplement for certain items. Our deal included two glasses of bubbly which I thought was a nice touch.
The staff very friendly and nothing two much trouble.
I don't have a dog but it is pet friendly at a charge of £10 a night.
Breakfast excellent buffet style with breakfast choices cooked to order. I had muffins with poached eggs and salmon they were divine.
The most interesting thing was the garden where I discovered a tree house which is available to rent. Two bedroom, kitchen .Amazing copper bath with a view. Wood burner. Underfloor heating. Veranda overlooking the garden possibly a view to the river?? Enchanting at any age. Would love to stay there.

Room Tip: Stayed in room 19 . Next to the restaurant.
