“Little bijou - in Chardonnay”
Reviewed October 31, 2011

Always a warm & friendly welcome from Nick & Rebecca & Sophie ! We stopped off for a quick coffee, which turned into apero & soon became lunch! Busy restaurant serving lovely food, & often a good mix of locals along with the English speaking guests ( ourselves & the Americans at the next table). The reputation of this wonderful B&B / bar / restaurant is truly world-wide !
A great option for an overnight stay if you are heading to the south of France or to the ski areas. Just 10 mins from the A6 you find yourself in a lovely French village & with the Cave de Chardonnay close by for wine tasting.
Or, if you are lucky enough to live in the Geneva area it is only and hour & half drive - go for a weekend & stay here & enjoy this beautiful area.

Once again we had a wonderful 4 days with Nick, Rebecca and Sophie at Le Chardon. They really are consumate hosts - the rooms are delightful, the bar warm and welcoming and Nick's food is, as always, utterly delicious! It's always a sign of quality when a bar or restaurant is frequented by locals as well as tourists, and Le Chardon is always buzzing with guests - those that are staying for a few nights, those who are on a wine tour and just happen to be passing, and those who live and work in the area and the welcome from Rebecca is the same for all - friendly and informative about the attractions of this beautiful area of France. We will certainly be back! (and thanks to Nick for the excellent packed lunch for our journey home!!)

Room Tip: All rooms are of an excellent quality; Gamay is probably the quietest, but to be honest Chardonnay i...

We chose Le Chardon on the back of Tripadvisor reviews and we weren't disappointed.

Travelling from Calais to the Cote d'Azur, we wanted an overnight stopover off the beaten track. Le Chardon is a bar/auberge popular with locals as well as Brits. We were given a warm welcome (and a glass of the local wine giving the village its name). We fancied a walk before dinner and Rebecca and Nick recommended a wonderful walk up into the vineyards.

Dinner was excellent with an excellent choice of local wines to accompany our meals. Afterwards we joined in with an impromptu "Themes from the Westerns" quiz which was fun.

Breakfast was equally good and we left feeling refreshed and ready for the second part of our journey.

Thoroughly recommended

We were recommended by friends and will pass this find on to others! The reviews speak for themselves and we'd agree whole-heartedly!
Amazing to find that Chardonnay is actually a tiny village . . . no shops even but a beautiful village-centre-garden. . . and, a wonderful auberge run by a super-friendly, helpful family: Rebecca (charming hostess, front-of-house), Nick (an able chef conjuring delicious menus . . . . I recommend the 'lapin'!), their daughter -Sophie- (helping at table in English and French) and the two golden retrievers.
We arrived on a Tuesday . . . . usually the day they're closed. The guests were the two of us, a regular business guest and a family of four. We all ate together along with the family and felt as though we were part of the family!
The location is ideal as a stop-over between the Channel and the south . . . . and enjoying the Harman-hospitality!

My husband and I have just arrived home after visiting this very pretty area of France. I can honestly say that Chardonnay is an absolute gem, with its stunning scenery, quiet country lanes and friendly locals.

Our short stay at “Le Chardon”, rounded off our 2 week holiday in France quite perfectly.

This was actually our 2nd visit to “Le Chardon” and to our delight, we spent two extremely restful nights in the “Gamay” room, overlooking the terribly quaint garden of this very special guest house.

During our stay, the hosts Nick and Rebecca celebrated their 28th Wedding Anniversary and we were welcomed with open arms and treated just like one of the family during the celebrations.

It had been two years since our last stay – but it felt like we had never been away.

On our first evening, we enjoyed a fabulous Greek Feast. Nick had prepared exquisite delicacies for the forty or so guests. The delicious local wine flowed and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves – especially when Rebecca began to deliver her accomplished rendition of “Zorba the Greek”. A great time was had by all!!!

We would like to thank you both for another very enjoyable stay. We will be back, hopefully we will not leave it quite so long next time.

I wouldn't normally go out of my way to stay at a place in France run by english people, but Le Chardon is an exception. Nick and Rebecca manage to create an atmosphere that is comfortable for locals and english speaking visitors alike.
The rooms are pleasant; pine floors, artworks by local artists, smart bathrooms. Duvet on the bed makes for difficult temperature adjustment - too hot for me, but no layers to peel off.
We enjoyed an excellent dinner; Chardonnay may be a long way from the sea, but we know from experience that salmon goes so well with the local wines. And the wine list is very reasonably priced too.
The Harman family extends to two golden retrievers, who inhabit the bar and like to lie at the top of the stairs where they disconcertingly match the colour of the floor in the half light! I'm not really a doggy person, and I did notice their smell, though I have to say they are very well behaved.
Chardonnay is the original sleepy village - beautifully quiet (especially at night), but near to many local places of interest.

This hotel is right in the middle of the village on Chardonnay - yes, Chardonnay is a village and not just a wine. And, of course, it is in the heart of the French Chardonnay wine area.
The hotel Le Chardon is a charming spot in both summer and winter - owned by an incredibly friendly & welcoming English couple who are very well assimiliated into the region and are knowledgeable about the area as a whole.
The restaurant is in the style of a French family restaurant with both English and French dishes perfectly prepared by Nick - the steaks from beef raised locally are particularly delicious.
It is worth noting that the restaurant is well patronised and held in high regard by the local community and by other local restauranteers - not bad for an Englishman cooking in France!
The hotel has four large very comfortable rooms.
