For my wife's 30th birthday, we booked a trip to the Dominican so she could spend the week in the beautiful Caribbean Sea, drinking exotic drinks, eating delicious food, and generally just relaxing.
Well, at least the ocean was nice, as long as you don't look too far to the right on the beach and notice your amazing Caribbean view is of the country's main port for cargo ships. Nothing like the site of heavy industry and cargo containers stacked several stories high to get you in the relaxed beach mood.
Most of the staff (the front desk, the people at the bar, entertainers, etc) are incapable of speaking English, and when I tried to meet them halfway with some limited Spanish, I was met with blank stares.
To say the alcohol selection was limited would be an understatement. I tried to order a Diet Coke and Vodka. I was eventually told (after several minutes of trying to get through to each other) that they had neither Diet Coke or Vodka, even though I could point at the bottles of both behind them.
There are no activities to participate in, with the exception of a half hearted attempt at a quiz show for an hour at 9:30 pm.
The music at the pool was loud enough to hear from anywhere in the complex, which made talking at all at the pool almost impossible. Not to mention the constant replay of the same 10 songs over and over. Who really wants to listen to Cher's "Do You Believe In Life After Love" in 2012? No one wanted to hear it when it came out in 1999.
I read in another review that someone described the pillows as feeling like they were full of rolled up socks. This is not an exaggeration. Whoever wrote that nailed the description better than anyone will ever be able to.
There's 2 parts to the food here. Part 1, the standard fair at the Hibiscus Restaurant is, without exaggeration, the single worst substance I've ever had to put in my mouth. This includes the several years eating food from an incredibly old and underfunded school cafeteria in North Carolina in the 80s.
Part 2. Food poisoning from the Hibiscus Restaurant was a great way for my wife to spend the end of our trip. Let me just say thank you to the amazing restaurant staff there, who ruined the end of an already terrible experience. Thanks for putting my wife out of commission for 2 days while I got to run around the resort trying to get something to help with the excruciating leg pains she was experiencing, while crying herself to sleep begging to go home. I even went so far as to go to the "Medical Clinic" they have in the resort. There's nothing hygienic at all about the clinic. 2 gross bunks beds, a disgusting (and small) reception area, and a doctor who didn't want to hear about any of her symptoms until she had either some form of payment or my medical insurance information.
In short, if you want to experience a beautiful Caribbean Island, are looking for a relaxing vacation, or a romantic trip, you can get the same experience by sleeping on a sheet of plywood with a bag full of rocks, going to your local public swimming pool, eating the leftovers your kids may decide to bring home from their school lunch after having been let out on the counter for 2 days, buying 1 type the lowest quality of alcohol possible and just telling people its better quality and something else, asking a kindergartner to come up with some form of entertainment, and swallowing spoiled milk for days on end while simultaneously punching yourself in the stomach.
