“Worst... trip... ever...”
Reviewed October 9, 2012

For my wife's 30th birthday, we booked a trip to the Dominican so she could spend the week in the beautiful Caribbean Sea, drinking exotic drinks, eating delicious food, and generally just relaxing.

Well, at least the ocean was nice, as long as you don't look too far to the right on the beach and notice your amazing Caribbean view is of the country's main port for cargo ships. Nothing like the site of heavy industry and cargo containers stacked several stories high to get you in the relaxed beach mood.

Most of the staff (the front desk, the people at the bar, entertainers, etc) are incapable of speaking English, and when I tried to meet them halfway with some limited Spanish, I was met with blank stares.

To say the alcohol selection was limited would be an understatement. I tried to order a Diet Coke and Vodka. I was eventually told (after several minutes of trying to get through to each other) that they had neither Diet Coke or Vodka, even though I could point at the bottles of both behind them.

There are no activities to participate in, with the exception of a half hearted attempt at a quiz show for an hour at 9:30 pm.

The music at the pool was loud enough to hear from anywhere in the complex, which made talking at all at the pool almost impossible. Not to mention the constant replay of the same 10 songs over and over. Who really wants to listen to Cher's "Do You Believe In Life After Love" in 2012? No one wanted to hear it when it came out in 1999.

I read in another review that someone described the pillows as feeling like they were full of rolled up socks. This is not an exaggeration. Whoever wrote that nailed the description better than anyone will ever be able to.

There's 2 parts to the food here. Part 1, the standard fair at the Hibiscus Restaurant is, without exaggeration, the single worst substance I've ever had to put in my mouth. This includes the several years eating food from an incredibly old and underfunded school cafeteria in North Carolina in the 80s.

Part 2. Food poisoning from the Hibiscus Restaurant was a great way for my wife to spend the end of our trip. Let me just say thank you to the amazing restaurant staff there, who ruined the end of an already terrible experience. Thanks for putting my wife out of commission for 2 days while I got to run around the resort trying to get something to help with the excruciating leg pains she was experiencing, while crying herself to sleep begging to go home. I even went so far as to go to the "Medical Clinic" they have in the resort. There's nothing hygienic at all about the clinic. 2 gross bunks beds, a disgusting (and small) reception area, and a doctor who didn't want to hear about any of her symptoms until she had either some form of payment or my medical insurance information.

In short, if you want to experience a beautiful Caribbean Island, are looking for a relaxing vacation, or a romantic trip, you can get the same experience by sleeping on a sheet of plywood with a bag full of rocks, going to your local public swimming pool, eating the leftovers your kids may decide to bring home from their school lunch after having been let out on the counter for 2 days, buying 1 type the lowest quality of alcohol possible and just telling people its better quality and something else, asking a kindergartner to come up with some form of entertainment, and swallowing spoiled milk for days on end while simultaneously punching yourself in the stomach.

Room Tip: Choose any other hotel possible. You can't possibly get any worse.

If you are looking for a place to spend your vacation: don't go to the BelleVue hotel - unless the following is on your "perfect-vacation-list" :-D

- Grumpy staff, unable to smile but very experienced in pushing you around
- Completely worn down rooms with very lumpy beds and pillows
- Leaky aircon resulting in constantly dripping ceiling
- No hot shower water
- Awful food served in a resturant best described as a VERY noisy and very understaffed cafeteria where waiting in line for 10 minutes for a little rice and empty food trays is perfectly normal.
Etc, etc!!!

I left the place more stressed than before I arrived at Bellevue - but hey, if you are looking for something that will make you appreciate you own home a bit more, this is it!!! Enjoy :-)

Room Tip: There are NO good rooms :-)

The staff was helpful; the food was plentiful and it had everything we needed. It is not Club Med, but it is perfectly adequate and a great place to take a group. We had baseball teams there all summer and they all had a great time and we interviewed the players and families about the accommodations and got good responses.

We stayed here for a week and i have to agree the outside grounds are kept in good condition, the rooms needs major renovation! beds werent that bad but the pillows did feel like a bag of socks. TV services was horrible, they never did get it working completly and you pay ten dollar deposit just to get a tv remote.
I'm guessing they have hard water cause the shower and sink in the bathroom had lime and calcium build up so bad that the water sprayed out everywhere, three tries just to flush the toilet. Oh, and when you enter your room you must put your room key cad in the slot on the wall in order to have electricity in your room, no one told us this ..had to figure it out on our own.
Food was so-so the presentation was just okay the taste left a lot to be desired, way to salty. The close proximatey to the beach is great, didnt mind the walk. the vendors are like scavengers and will pounce on you if they see money and hound you all day, makes you not want to go to the beach at all. It would be helpful if more of the staff were able to speak/understand english! there is a small sign in the bathroom that tells you not to drink the water so expect to buy water to keep in your room. hotel is pretty quiet during the week but on the weekends the locals flood the resort and take over everything, expect long lines for food on the weekends. To many flies and bugs in the dinning area on the buffet food... ugggh. would also be nice if there were more activities at the resort seems like nothing is available until the weekend. Staff bombard you with a timeshare presentation by offering you a "welcome gift"
Over all, would not stay here again.

The property is pretty and has access to the beach via a private bridge. That being said THE FOOD IS HORRIBLE !!!! Ok i get it that for the price I wasn't expecting too much, but cold nacho cheese from the can being passed off as cream cheese for breakfast ? If you stay here my advise would be enjoy the beach etc but eat in town with the money you are saving from booking a better hotel
