“Great hotel and dog friendly too”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 24, 2013

Spent a long time trying to find a reasonably priced hotel/B&B last minute they day before travelling to Thirlmere. Booking was simple and easy and a quick phonecall to the hotel let us know the surcharge for taking a dog.
Hotel looks lovely from the outside and I was not disappointed when I got inside. We arrived rather late but the receptionsist was ready and waiting for us and was very friendly. The room was comfortable and clean. The dog quickly made herself at home as did we.
Breakfast was tastey and there was a good choice of continental. We especially liked the fact that our well behaved dog was allowed in with us rather than having to be locked in the room.
Definitely a hotel I would use in the future!

we stayed here on our 1st anniversary trip, my husband booked it so i didnt know where we were staying until i arrived. The location of the lodge is beautiful, parking space is good and there is a nice pub a few minutes walk from the lodge. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good, plenty of choice.

After reading on a website a less than complimentary review of The Lodge I had some apprehension about having booked accommodation there, but, thank goodness, we pressed on and soon wondered whether the writer had confused The Lodge with somewhere else: our own experience could not have been more different. In every respect (apart from the shortage of car parking space and limited sitting (lounge) area) we were delighted and would gladly return. Even though on roadside, our ground floor room was ideal - no traffic disturbance and easy for coming and going with our dog.

Room Tip: If dogowners, ask for Room 5!

Dear David
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I'm pleased that your mind was put to rest when you arrived and that you and your dog had a comfortable stay. I would like to point out that you might have missed the large car park to the rear of the property and might have only seen the three spaces we have in front of the building. We look forward to your next visit.

We visit the Lakes regularly and when i found this cute looking lodge on the internet i was very excited to try it out, having a fab location also. When we arrived i was disappointed by its over all appearance ( needs a coat of paint) sadly it all went down hill from there, in short:
- we had to wait 15 mins for some one to book us in at the reception
- We were then given the wrong key to the room!
- once in! shock how small the room was. we are lucky as we are small people! although we still struggled to pass each other in the room or fall over the bed! cupboards couldn't open properly due to the bed being in the way! not good for claustrophobic people!
- The room was cold and the heating was pr-set by the lodge so you could boost the heating for an hour but you have no control on the heat (or lack of!)
- The room and bathroom was clean but there were cob webs all over and surfaces were dusty
-Laminate flooring made the place a death trap!
- Worst of all we were woken at 11.30PM ( after a whole day of tiring traveling we were well asleep!) by the room phone as the receptionist said we had a phone call from a foreign country, this was not the case for us. If she had checked with the caller against our name before waking us up this would not have happened.
- Now well awake this gave me the pleasure to observe how thin the walls were as i could hear the toilet in the next room in action!
- Bed was very uncomfortable
-Plumbing was very poor, the shower trickled out and the toilet was far too noisy and took ages to refill.
- Wi-Fi was very poor in the rooms but worked fine in the cafe area
-Breakfast hours were not long enough starting at 8.15am and ending at 9.30am, no room for a lay in!
-Very over priced for the size of the room, no bath and glorified hostel feeling
-Cafe shuts at 9.30pm, felt like it was lights out at 9.30pm!

Good points
- Clean bedding and towels
- Breakfast was sufficient though no hot items
- Safe in room and free to use

Room Tip: Rooms on the road side are loud with traffic noise as on a main road

Dear Guest
Thank you for your comments following your stay at The Lodge in the Vale.
The ethos of Trip Advisor as a site, as we understand it, is for users of a particular facility or service to give an accurate, balanced and honest view of their experience. This enables future users to know what to expect and the operators of the facility or service to use the feedback to improve their standards, if issues of shortfall have been accurately and honestly pointed out.
Your review does none of these things. Your expectations of the services we provide do not reflect the services we offer or advertise. It makes no sense to criticise services we do not provide or that you pay for. This is just lazy and self absorbed reviewing and not worth giving any credibility to - it is a waste of your time writing it and my time having to respond to it.
I feel that your expectations were completely different to what we advertise and have to offer, which includes 4 star contemporary accommodation with continental breakfast.
- The building was built less than three years ago out of Nordic cedar, which is supposed to have a weathered look. Please note that the property blends into the Lake District National Park landscape very well. The timber work was never intended to be painted - that it should be is your personal uneducated opinion.
- I apologise that you weren't tended to immediately on arrival, however fifteen minutes is a gross exaggeration an total misrepresentation of our service. Any member of staff in the adjacent coffee shop would have assisted you if reception wasn't manned at that moment in time.
- As explained to you at check-in, previous guests left with the room key and unfortunately the incorrect spare key was given to you at first. This was corrected straight away. It should have been a non issue unless as is the case here, you again wish to exaggerate.
- We are sorry that you felt the standard double room was too small, Our rooms vary in size , all have five foot fully sprung beds and all furniture has been designed and sized to fit each room. It is just not true to say that you could not open the wardrobe - again an exaggeration and an untruth.
- The room temperature is set at 22C, when it falls below this temperature; the system will boost it back up to 22C. This is a new building and complies with all current regulations for insulation and soundproofing. Again your reviewing in this area does not correspond with reality or actuality.
- I am most surprised regarding our comments on housekeeping - If you take the time and trouble to read our other reviews you will find yourself in a minority of one in this area. Had you brought any shortcomings to our attention we would have dealt with them immediately.

- Calling laminate flooring a death trap is again an illustration of gross exaggeration and undermines any credibility you may have as a reviewer. The flooring fitted in all our bedrooms has been chosen with care, taking into account all health, safety and aesthetic aspects. We chose this style of flooring because we welcome pets and families and it is a hygienic and appropriate look for our accommodation type.
- The telephone call that was redirected to your room was for you as you were asked for by name.
- We had no other reports of water pressure problems during the time you stayed nor had we before or since.
- The Wi-Fi signal covers the whole building, again, it would have been helpful if you mentioned you were having problems connecting your particular device as we could have solved the problem straight away.
- It is unfortunate that you felt that breakfast wasn’t available for long enough and that you would’ve liked the café to stay open later at night, I will point out that we are not a hotel, we provide B&B accommodation, which includes a continental breakfast with no hot items. This is what we advertise and this is what we charge for. If you wanted a different type of accommodation with more extensive services you should have booked it and paid for it.
- You were compensated with a part refund upon check-out and we were unaware of any of the other issues that you mention above.
Whilst I feel that your review is inaccurate and does not represent the services and experiences of staying at The Lodge in the Vale (see other reviews) I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay. I hope that in the future, you make your buying decisions when booking hotel accommodations, based both on what the hotel is advertising and offering and what you want and are willing to pay for.

Rooms are a decent size, clean, modern, have good plumbing and a decent TV. Location is a small village and there are no pubs or restaurants in strolling distance, however Keswick is less than 10 minutes by car and there is a bus service, the stop being a 100 metres or so away. You can walk into the hills straight from the hotel. The continental style cold breakfast (there is toast from nice bread) is good with everything that needs to be fresh each day seeming to be so, moreover the cafe/breakfast area has comfortable seating and seems to get used all day not just at breakfast. Perhaps lacks a little character so if you're looking for "olde worlde" or idiosyncratic charm this is not it. That said it's not large so has more a more personal feel and attentive staff than, say, an Ibis.

Some might find the beds a little hard, though I thought them very comfortable, preferring this to a soft bed, and slept well. The bed linen and duvet was good.

Overall excellent value and recommended. I knock off one-star as I think they could make an effort to "dress" the place better (more and better pictures, a few objects) and the heating, though ok and the building, being recent I assume meets modern insulation standards, could be better. More shelf space in the en-suite would be good too.

Room Tip: We paid an extra £10 a night for a larger room. Their ad-says the standard rooms are 5m2 and the lar...

Dear Guest
Thank you for your detailed review of the Lodge. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay and that you found it comfortable and good value. There is one shelf in every en-suite, however we will certainly consider extra shelving where possible. We hope to see you in the the near future.

A one night stay on a last minute whim. Good choice by my fiancé. The property has a proper lodge feel about it. It's a very clever set up and was modern, clean and comfortable. There was a great cafe on site and the whole atmosphere was very relaxed. The staff were really lovely with beaming smiles and a friendly welcome when we walked in. We had dinner at the local pub a mile away which was very nice and got a 10% discount as we were at The Lodge. Our room was big enough for a one night stay with a decent sized tv and plenty of programmes to choose from when we finally got to bed. It's in a great location offering easy access to those beautiful towns in the surrounding area. We are not big fans of continental breakfast but The Lodge offered a really good selection of food and cereal. Would stay here again.
