“Great stay in Vals”
Reviewed December 3, 2013

We stayed at Hotel Rovanda this winter with our two young children and really enjoyed our stay. The hotel in newly renovated and is comfortable, new and spacious. Breakfast is incredible, the restaurant was delicious, and most of all the staff are helpful and kind. Dennis at reception was particularly warm, helpful, and quite funny. It is a very quick (2 minute) walk to the thermal baths and 5 minutes from town. We would stay here again.

I was really curious about this place I had found as certificate of excellence in Tripadvisor and I had the fortunate chance to spend there two nights (a short weekend stay) and one night in Casa Da Luzi, which I will review separately. Previously I always went to the Hotel Therme and had not noticed that Hotel Rovanda was in front , maybe because I parked my car up high and not on the street level.
Anyway, this has been a wonderful surprise and I now understand why it has won the credit of certificate of excellence. We stayed in a superior room which was really very spacious and functional , the finishing and the furniture with very good taste and a wonderful view of the village of Vals , which is enchanting. There are three restaurants , we tried La Cucina where we had a perfectly cooked fondue, I tried fondue in many places in Switzerland and this one is very similar to that made in Gruyeres , except that it is served with bread and vegetables and fruit (instread of potatoes) , so I must say it was really excellent. Fondue is not on the menu can be ordered. In this restaurant they offer fine italian cuisine and the pasta is home made ,they also prepare their bio products including yogurt, jams, marmalades, ice cream etc etc. Another night we tried the other Restaurant, which is really quite , cozy and ideal for couples, we tried , on suggestion of the owner of the Hotel, a typical dish cooked in a large pot of stone, it can be made of meat and vegetables or fish, all products are seasonal. We tried the meat and was really excellent. We did not have another night to dine at Il Diavolo , but there is a special evening where you can grill your own chosen fish or meat. This will be done in our next visit.
By the way the wine list is really very good , I thinK I saw some italian fine wines, one is Brunello by Bondi Santi , Sassicaia and a wine by Masi (I do not know if it was Amarone). These three wines are really excellent but the night I spent in Casa Luzi I tried one of their local wines, (excellent). The desserts are also very special I liked the panna cotta very much with their own warm raspberry topping. I saw the pool area and it is really nice with a wonderful view. This hotel is also very closed to the Thermae. You practically cross the road , enter the Therme Selva Building , take the lift and in five minutes you are in Peter Zumthor designed Therme , the hotel offer discount entrance and they offer towels and bag as complimentary , of course you must return the goods. Evi Berni also showed us one of the Suites , the Alpen Suite, which is really trendy ... large and spacious. By reading all the reviews , I would like to say that prices in this hotel are shown very clearly : but if you have any doubts you are surrounded by very friendly and competent staff who would explain everything. I think that these people have a real passion for their work and they transmit it to the client. And this is very important. Here you have quality , taste and style ... and the prices , according to my experience are more convenient .... who could ask for anything more. This place is a real MUST .

Room Tip: I would suggest a superior or Suite...but I also highly recommend a stay in Casa Da Luzi.

By any standard, breakfast is absolutely impressive, and the biggest highlight of the hotel. It was quite surprising that one can cook his own omelets there with fresh ingredients. We also had dinner at the hotel and it also was very good and very reasonably priced (for Swiss prices).
The employees are all very nice. They were always very helpful and friendly. Very welcoming.
The hotel itself is very nice too. We didn't try the spa area... The Therme Vals is right in front of the hotel and its definitely worth a visit. Remember to ask at reception a proof that you slept in Vals (there's a reduction n the entrance to the Thermen with such proof... From 40 CHF to 29 CHF).
The room was in a new building, very modern and comfortable. The only small but is that there's absolutely no privacy in the toilet. So if you share the room you'd better know each other very well.

A wonderful place to stay, with 2 in-house italian cuisine restaurants and facilities such as pools, sauna, steam-rooms and gym. The front desk service was helpful and cheerful, offering us a welcome beverage upon our arrival.

Our room (in the modern building) was clean, spacious and had lots of storage/shelving for luggage. Furthermore, whilst our room did not have a balcony, we were able to open the doors to have a fantastic view of the stunning scenery beyond and get fresh air. Bathrobes and towels provided for visits to the Therme Baths, as well as a discounted entrance fee.

The included breakfasts were nutritious and deliciously wholesome, offering a wide spread of breads, cold meats, cheeses, baked sweet tarts, fruits, cereals, yoghurts and tea. The view from the breakfast room and the friendly staff made for a great start to our mornings.

The bathroom is a glass box within the room (shy persons beware) and lacks a shower tray or shower screen door, so the entire bathroom floor ends up wet. Additionally, a small warning: everything is in German, but the restaurant does have an English menu and the staff can speak French/English.

Room Tip: Make sure you book a room in the modern hotel extension, not in the older building.

i spend half my life in hotels. and this was one of the most disappointing stays i have had in years. the property is next to a nice creek, so if you are lucky enough to have a room on that side, then the experience might be OK. the other side is over a huge parking lot. the windows dont open. so there you are in Switzerland, with pristine air and the windows are inoperable. it was the cheap option. which is probably the best way to describe he entire property - cheap. expect the price. switzerland is a nation which understands hospitality and has a deep tradition of quality. seems that this was lost here.

the sink in the bathroom is not even large enough to place a small travel bag. dont hang a dress or shirt to steam on the shower bar to get the wrinkles out because your clothes will get wet. the stunning Vals spa is a walk across the parking lot, the street and then on up the hill.

the hotel 'spa' is really a check-list excuse. we took one look and turned around.

the Hotel is nice. the Food is fabulous! booking was very chaotic....
rooms are very simple. we had the alpine-Suite...- totally overpriced! (no balcony; wc can hardly be used as you feel you are sitting in the middle of the Lounge). spa we weren't keen on, water in the indoor-pool is too cold. area is very nice, garden terrace very pleasant. very clean.
really nice that you can have free coffe all day and also cold Drinks. even the wine is good and you can have as much as you like. on the whole probably between 3 and 4 depending on how you feel about climbing mountains every day....

Friendly staff, outstanding food, utterly peaceful room with a blissful view and a journey from Zurich worth the cost on its own. Whether you're seeking a romantic getaway, a great base for hiking or the local Therme, or simply a total escape from the city, I couldn't recommend Hotel Rovanada enough. Special highlights were the free loan of e-bikes, ever-constant and comforting rush of the neighbouring river, and an all-in deal which featured just about the best 5-course dinner I've ever had. Loved it all.

Room Tip: Ask for one overlooking the river on the 2nd or 3rd floor. The view is wonderful.
