“Lovely, relaxing,welcoming”

A rather belated review for Eric and the lovely Esperanto Lodge. The wife and I stayed there earlier this year.
We thought the place was great with three types of water, the lake near the house, the creek that you cross to get to the sand dunes and the sea. Really lovey, also very quiet and good food. About 2 or 3 kms from the centre of Kafountine

Eric & Justine have put together a really wonderful gem of a place with the Esperanto Lodge. If you love Africa, this is a perfect place to stay and relax. If you don't know Africa, this is a wonderful way to start the love affair! The rooms are comfortable and in a local style but to a high standard. The lodge overlooks a lake making it a magnet for birds - Senegambia is an important migration stop - and I can't remember exactly how many different species have been seen in the grounds but think it's at or near 100! The beach is a one minute walk through the garden and over a bridge. Blissfully empty for most of the time. Kafountine itself is pretty cool - there are even (very local style) nightclubs, as well as markets and the odd restaurant. It's like a cool unspoken gem so it attracts a few international travellers - French, Italian, Dutch, Germans, British - which means that you can even get Red Bull and a decent Roquefort cheese in the local corner shop. Other than that, it's bush and beach at its best - drift off listening to some drums coming from a nearby compound, drift along the beach (past the shipwreck) to hang out with some locals over a beer or - and this is the best thing of all in my opinion - go out for a day on a boat into the bolongs... a network of timeless tributaries off the Casamance, with the odd village hidden away and long, empty vistas. In one day you might see one other boat with a motor, one with a sail and a dugout - it's like travelling back in time to a place of ancient peace. Sigh. Just writing this is making me want to go back right now...

Room Tip: Discuss it with Eric - he'll put you in the best room he's got anyway. Book early in high se...
