Gipsy Point Lodge
Ranked #2 of 2 Gipsy Point B&B and Inns
Reviewed December 6, 2009

This is the second time we have stayed at Gypsy Point lodge and once again, it was wonderful. The rooms and cottages are set in gardens which are frequented by parrots, rosellas, kangaroos etc. Some of the parrots even ate bird seed out of our hand!

The accommodation itself has a rustic appeal. There is no mobile reception, although you can get reception if your drive for 5-10 minutes up the road. There is a phone available at reception as well as internet. For me this is part of the appeal - you can really enjoy the peace.

The lodge is also close to the river and is great for kayaking - kayaks are provided free of charge for use by guests. You can also hire a boat from the lodge and take it down for a picnic at one of the jetties. Fish jump out of the water and there are whistling kites and white bellied sea eagles easily spotted.

The owners, Ian and Libby are very friendly and helpful and went out of their way to help us use the kayaks, canoes and boats that they have available for hire. There is also a restaurant that serves decent food (we ate there in our previous visit)

The water is rain water so tastes and smells a bit strange if you are not used to it - we had bottled water to drink anyway. The property is for sale as the owners are looking forward to retirement.

Gipsy Point Lodge provides comfortable, spacious accommodation set in beautiful gardens which are surrounded by pristine bushland, lakes and rivers as part of the Croajingolong National Park. The lodge has a private jetty only 200m away from the accommodation. It is located at the edge of the village of Gipsy Point, which is 20kms North of the resort town of Mallacoota, roughly halfway between Melbourne and Sydney (500kms from each) and only 300kms from Canberra.

We stayed at the lodge in one of the self-contained cottages for three nights in April 2009. There are three self-contained cottages at the lodge, the rest are part of the guest-house where all meals are prepared. Our cottage, called 'Whipbird Cottage', was very spacious, featuring a large kitchen & lounge area, two large bedrooms sleeping up to five with access via a long, wide hallway and a large, renovated bathroom.

Every aspect of our stay was wonderful - from the sunset walks along the Genoa River (upper reaches of the Mallacoota Lakes) to the large amount of wildlife that had called Gipsy Point Lodge resident (proving it to be a real paradise). From colourful King Parrots that would come and eat from your hand to kangaroos that would hop around the lawns of the lodge just outside our room to the chooks which waddled around the gardens, this place allowed us to get away from all the stresses of a normal city life in Melbourne.

Ian and Libby, the friendly and very helpful owners who manage Gipsy Point Lodge, were very helful in providing information for us about the local area, attractions and access to them. Therefore, we were somewhat disapointed to see that they are selling the lodge, so wanting to return again after such a wonderful stay! We must now hope that those who are the new owners look after the accommodation with the same level of quality and efficiency as they have.

Value wise, the lodge is very reasonable. We discovered when booking that there is a much more expensive (and much more publicised) Gipsy Point Luxury Lakeside Apartments just up the road a few hundred metres away. We paid $145 per night + 10% discount off the final amount if it is 3 nights or more is great value, compared to the $300 a night being charged down at Lakeside. The lodge provides Gipsy Poitn with the only form of genuine competition - we can only hope that it doesn't become trendified and expensive (bad value) like Lakeside down the road.

I recommend Gipsy Point Lodge to anyone who loves nature, fishing, getting away from it all and the Australian bush in general. It certainly exceeded my expectations. We cannot wait to return so we can savour the excellent experience again and again.

This place is a great find for both travellers on a Sydney-Melbourne (Melbourne-Sydney)trip and for those wanting to get away from it all for a few days. As the Lodge is only 10kms from the Princes Hwy it gets a fair few people dropping in at the last minute to stay overnight - but Ian and Libby welcome them with the same grace they showed in helping us make the most of our 5 day stay. Nothing is too much trouble at Gypsy Point. We stayed in a guesthouse room, and our room rate included all meals, including hot breakfasts, picnic/BBQ lunches and delicious 3-course dinners made by their chef. The bush and river views from our room were regenerative for the soul, the food was yummy, and we enjoyed the local bushwalks, waterfalls, beaches, boating on the river, canoeing, as well as just sitting around reading and relaxing! The birds, kangaroos and goannas around the place were amazing too. This is a fantastic place for Aussies to get away from it all, and a unique stop-off for international travellers to experience the Australian bush, river, sea, birds, and other wildlife.

I was surprised not to find the wonderful Gipsy Point Lodge already listed on here, or maybe everyone else who has stayed there is trying to keep it their secret!

If you enjoy total peace and quiet, walking and wildlife and a proper chance to relax this is definitely the place for you.

The rooms are relatively simple but vey clean and comfortable, with gorgeous views across the garden and river beyond. We were only able to stay one night but really wish it could have been longer. We had a walk up to the point where the rivers meet, but if we'd had more time the Lodge have boats available to explore the river. Next time maybe!

Loads of wildlife, kangaroos in the garden and so many different birds to spot - a real haven!

We were very well looked after by Ian & Libby, including a delicious 3 course evening meal, they made us very welcome.

PS Ian - have you still got the puzzle that my husband managed to solve hidden away?!!
