I, too am dismayed at the poor reviews for Monkey Island . We actually extended our stay there as we had such a great time. We were in Thailand and stayed for three weeks with five star hotels either side of our trip to Koh Mak and I think it would be grossly unfair to compare them with this resort.
The accommodation was basic but more than adequate and you can find far worse in Thailand that is more expensive. The resort has a great friendly feel and it is the perfect place to relax as the beach is quiet and the whole feel of the place is very chilled. The food is ok but the portions were a little on the small side in comparison to some of the local restaurants but we ate there a fair bit as we struggled to drag ourselves off of the beach!
All in all, I don't think I could find any aspect of Monkey Island which I didn't thoroughly enjoy (Particularly Mr Tea's band in the bar) and would love to return to Monkey Island soon.More
