The island is made accessible considering how remote it is. We can't expect such a small and intimate place to have an airport on it, now can we? It would then no longer be private, right...
Each beautiful modern bungalow is its own mini paradise.
The rooms and pool and restaurant are simple and elegant, and therefore it is possible to keep everything immaculate. The staff were outstanding. I love not being plagued Western Style with sales. I love asking for what I want, and getting it, not being bothered and interrupted all the time with drink requests. Really, getting up to get such affordable drinks with glass and ice at such a BEAUTIFUL location, is an absolute treat. The wide open restaurant feet away from the sea. The delicious food at prices that are so low. The super simple walkways to each private bungalow. It makes me feel bad to read reviews by people who, well, where do you think you are travelling to? If you think you belong at this resort, than you do. Reminds me of the feeling and atmosphere 20 years ago when I first went to Koh Chang. Except, way higher end. To get this vibe, these rooms, anywhere else in the world, would cost double the price. And yes, there is shallow water and very attractive black rock. Note this before you go and enjoy the lovely pool. Rent scooters or the golf cart to visit beaches. Please everyone, the comments on trip advisor can really affect a persons life, and business. Please lets all take into account where we are talking about and for example not fault remote islands for intermittent wireless. And just because a server isn't a grinning fool doesn't mean he doesn't want to help you.
We really really loved this resort and having been there last February, we are going again this November. All the way to Thailand just to go to Plubpla. It's that quiet, that private, that perfect. Make sure to contact me if you have specific questions. I know how important our choices are.

Room Tip: I do not need a jacuzzi. And because there are 3 rows of bungalows, and each one is thoughtfully pla...

Stayed here 7 nights (in stead of 4) and liked it a lot.Quiet place (low season), lovely infinity pool, very nice family and staff, great food. Enjoyed our days reading and relaxing by the pool and strolling around the beach. Perfect ending of our trip to Cambodja & Thailand.

Pluspla Resort

The website seemed to indicate that all the travel arrangements from the airport were seamless. It wasn't. It was muddled and we had to sort it. We were expected to carry our own luggage to and from the speedboat!!

The resort is set in a very secluded spot that in many ways would be idyllic. Having endured a speedboat ride where you were constantly soaked by the in aptitude of a captain who thought it was funny to get the boat wash to spray you we arrived after 1 hour at the Island pier. We were collected by a driver in an open top truck and driven several miles down unmade roads to the resort.

On arrival:

The Reception was not manned. We stood around like lemons. Then a girl arrived with glasses of juice before someone actually attended to us.

We were asked to pay a 3% credit card surcharge despite there being no mention of this on the resort website or through Booking.com. Eventually this was withdrawn but clearly left a mark against our name.

After the formalities were completed, we were taken to our chalet which did not have a view of the beach/sea that we had paid for. Another complaint made within a matter of 1/2 hour of arriving. The staff found us another chalet which had a partial view of the beach/sea.

Beach:
Beach - poor
Swimming in the sea - looks perilous - rocks under the water and we were informed by the staff it was not a good idea anyway.

Restaurant Area:
Internet connection is free but painfully slow
No evening entertainment
No bar as it is hidden in the kitchen area
The food is good.

Staff:
Service is slow. The attention to detail is not good. When at a resort I expect the staff to be attentive without being over zealous. I do not expect to have get up and ask for drinks.
Only the Manager has a smattering of both understanding and speaking English and does his best. Whilst I cannot speak Thai that should not detract from the fact that this is a resort taking bookings from International clientele and Thai is not universal whilst English generally is.

Swimming pool:
Good size with a good view of the Gulf of Thailand.

Chalet Room:
Good sized bedroom with full length windows both sides giving ample natural light.
Modern Bathroom. There are 2 showers (1 indoor and 1 outdoor - enclosed)
Whilst a bath towel is provided, there are no hand towels. There is also no hand soap.
No bathrobes
No slippers
No umbrella
No English TV channels except 2 news programmes
No kettle or coffee/tea to make tea/coffee in room
No Internet connection in room
No room service of any kind
No telephone
There is a really good outside deck.
However the deck chairs become uncomfortable after a short while sitting on them.
The area would be improved with the addition of a picnic table and chairs.

Would I recommend this resort? Well now I know what not to expect probably yes. However their website needs to reflect what is available and not pretend its a 4* resort when it's clearly only 2*.

Room Tip: The only rooms with an uninterrupted view across the Gulf are the Deluxe and we could only find one...

I first visited Plub Pla resort when it first opened 4 years ago and asked if we could simply have some lunch at the restaurant and was told "yes but you cant swim in the pool" . OK fine but I did not wish to use the pool so not sure why they were so protective of it! The service was sullen and we were not made to feel welcome - we have a home on the island and had three visitors with us looking for somewhere to stay - they decided they would not stay here! When we were on the island in April this year we decided to try Plub Pla again for lunch - surely it cant have been as bad as we remembered looking at the reviews on here! I am sorry to say we were not made to feel welcome and so decided to only have a drink and not order any food at all. The staff whilst plentiful and un occupied ignored us and even when I tried to make conversation with some of the staff they looked at me as though I should not be on the property buying a drink! The resort does have a nice setting and the pool looks lovely and I totally understand that they cannot make this an open pool for drop in visitors but to me it seems they go out of their way to make non residents feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. We wont be giving it a third try and certainly wont recommend the resort to any friends and family visiting the island.

The rooms are basic but comfy - some nice views available of the beach which is nice but venture not too far away and it's pretty grim - a lot of rubbish ruining the white sands - it wouldn't take much for the staff to have a quick tidy up and make it less gross.

The beds are very hard... great if you have back problems... but if you don't, maybe expect to have an uncomfortable nights sleep.

They LOVE strimming the grass on this island, so don't expect to be able to hear the gentle sounds of the sea washing up on the sand... espcially in this place. We were surprised to see any grass left!!

The staff are nice in the main, but one staff member seemed to have a bit of an attitude problem... we nicknamed him Thai Elvis (he had a quiff) and he seemed to be unable to hide his rude facial expressions when he walked away from us.

They have a dog that hangs out in reception here... he's a very beautiful husky, and he's also a grumpy sod! Don't stroke him... he'll go for you. Poor thing is probably baking in the heat. I'd be pissed off if I were him to be fair.

Good food in the restaurant.

If you're looking for a genuine small island experience, Koh Mak is a great place to go in Thailand.
After exploring the island for a few days and visiting all the resorts, I must say Plubpla is probably the best resort on the island.
By european standards, this hotel is 3 stars at most, but it's one of those places where if you go with the flow, you're gonna have a great time, If you expect too much, you are going to be disappointed. Trust me, you'll go back home looking like Di Caprio in 'The Beach' :)
We had a cabin with a jacuzzi and beach view. Room facilities are basic, but everything you need is there: airco, minibar, indoor and outdoor shower and a good bed. Pool is great, since everything has to be transported by boat from the mainland, breakfast is very limited, especially for vegetarians, but doable.
You can rent a motorbike (400 BHT per day) to go around the island and explore, we also did the snorkeling trip which was nice, but you do have to share the experience with many other tourists... Like I said, never mind, go with the flow :).
I do think most visitors are there to get away from the stress of everyday modern life and just relax. Staff enable you to do just that, see them more as your personal servants who will stay out of your way and let you relax rather than than the usual "are you having a nice stay sir?" type. Staff will remember your habits and aim to please.
If you like a bit more action like we do, you can definitely squeeze a few interesting days out of this little island.
So a great experience overall.

Room Tip: Spend a little extra cash and go for a jacuzzi cabin, the beach is just there for the great view.

We stayed at Plubpla for 9 nights from mid Jan and could hardly fault it. If you want somewhere quiet and relaxing then this is the place, Only 18 bungalows so no chance of overcrowding with the most helpful of staff run by the owners, the Kwang family who could not have been more accomodating. The restaurant was good with a wide choice, although occasionally the food could have been warmer, but the prices both there and in the room mini bar were extremely reasonable for a 4 star hotel. Bungalow rooms spacious with excellent bathroom and cleaned thoroughly each day and have a large verandha with views down to the sea. Super pools with plenty of seating and the grounds were immaculate. We didn't fancy a motorcycle so the hotel organised a golf buggy which turned out to be a marvellous way to tour the island - safe with time to take it all in. Would recommend Plubpla to anyone who wants a relaxing holiday.
