“Solitude, serenity and service”

The Plub Pla resort is situated on the island of Koh Mak. This island is remote, tranquil and although(quiet) construction is evident, the "island feeling" appears to be there to stay. The resort itself is a beautiful and short 15 minute van drive across the island ( arranged by resort) passing the obligatory coconut palms and an abundance of rubber tree Plantations aswell as a couple of humourous suprises. Walking into the resort is like walking into a postcard, you are immediately at calm due to friendly service and the atmosphere which envelopes you. The light, minimalist and airy dining area is perfect for absorbing the sea views and despite the restaurant closing at 9pm, the deep sense of relaxation ensures a perfect nights sleep or retirement to your villa balcony to watch the waves and stars with a reasonably priced mini bar. The villas are extremely clean, modern, spacious and well maintained. I personally would recommend the beach villa which houses a jacuzzi on the balcony ( unfortunately not all the jets worked in ours and the plug was malfunctioning but these inconveniences are surpassed by the stunning views and powerful jets which are functioning) The beach offers an alternative to the usual Thailand white, pebble free manicured private beaches, with rock pools and over hanging trees in vast quantities. Apart from moonlit or dawnbreak walks the beach is not needed however as the large infinity pool surrounded by decking and luscious grass, is perfect to while away the hours. Overall, this little haven is perfect for achieving your inner peace, with reasonably priced food within an extensive menu, beautiful surroundings and stunning scenery with pleasant and friendly service.

We booked into PlubPla wanting to chill out and relax. This was the perfect place to do that.

Whilst not formally 5-star, the service was fantastic. Especially the 2 boys at the front desk. They couldnt be more helpful or sweet. Same with the manager, Somsri, he did his best to make sure we were comfortable, without being intrusive.

Whilst we got the spa rooms on the beach, the spa wasn't really necessary (and took too long to fill) but the location was amazing.

It rained most the time being monsoon season but it was still warm enough to swim in the pool in a thunderstorm.

The food was OK. They could probably spice that up a little but that is the only criticism.

If you are looking for a bit of luxury with a chilled out vibe then this is your place. If you are looking for a party and 'things' to do, then this is not for you. Saying that most the island was shut, so I am sure there are 'things' to do when it is high season.

I never write reviews but it honestly would be a crime not to share the experience that my wife and i had at what can only be described as absolute genuine gem of a resort that i found in Thailand.

I've been to Thailand many times over the last decade, for me personally the western islands of Koh Phi Phi and Phuket have become too commercial and sadly lost some of the true Thai feel that this part of the world is known for.

The last few visits i have ventured over to the Eastern islands of Koh kood and Koh Mak in search of tranquil and more natural surroundings, this is where i have been lucky to find Koh Mak retreat.

Koh Mak retreat delivered on every level from stunning sunsets, food to die for and a service by the resort staff that really was above and beyond anywhere else i had previously visited in Thailand. On arrival i was greeted at the pier and escorted back to the retreat where we were served a complimentary drink before being shown our villa that was situated directly on the beach front. The view was amazing, looking out onto blue skies and blue sea.. The only noise i heard in the whole time of my 10 day stay was the sound of the water breaking in front of the villa...If you want peace and need quiet like myself to read a good book without disturbance then this is the place to be.. The only distraction will be the heat and that problem was easily solved by moving into the chilled jacuzzi in the villa.

Inside the villas the decor is to a high standard and the choice of showering inside or outside under the stars was a great touch but not more than the huge beds that i struggled daily to get out of.

The food was fresh and cooked perfectly. Dishes from traditional Thai to western are all served, pad thai is a must..

The staff always had a smile and nothing was too much to ask for and the manager has a great sense of humour and daily taught me more and more thai which we had a great laugh about as i always got it wrong.

I really am struggling to find a negative about this place so i'm not going to try, it truly was a great experience and if you are looking for somewhere to just get away from the hectic western world then look no further because this place really delivers.

Room Tip: All are great but villa no1 has the best view..

We stayed at Plubpla for 4 nights in March and it was the best four nights of our whole trip all things considered. We stayed in Bungalow 1 right on the beach, which appeared to be the best bungalow of the lot. The room was clean, contemporary and comfortable. The jacuzzi bath outside didnt work but that was ok because to be honest it just attracts the midgies anyway. The grounds are immaculate and the beach is well kept. The pool is beautiful. Being able to look out to the beach and the sea from the infinity pool was very cool. The pool area itself was in need of some TLC and if you're taking kids there I'd be cautious as they could catch their feet on the poorly maintained decking. As other reviewers have said, the beach is disappointing, but if you hire mopeds from the hotel you can explore the entire island in a day and head to amazing places like Ao Prao. Beautiful.

The food was good, but be prepared that they dont serve quickly and you may not be served together. When its ready, it gets served to you. The staff were lovely, couldnt be more welcoming and helpful. A couple of exceptions, but nothing to worry about.

Having spent 4 weeks all over Thailand in different accommodation, this was our favourite and the one which was certainly best value. As a stand alone I'd probably have given it 4 stars but in comparison to others its pushed its way up to 5. We wouldnt hesitate in going back.

The hotel rocks, the service is great, the beach is a usable one but the location is tucked away in the corner of the island, great for honeymoon and peace and quiet. It's the la st remaining non tourist place in the marine reserve. There's no party culture and no seedy vibes here. It's just purely amazing and I think worth a visit if you not looking for lady boys and party. Much love ridhwaan and shehnaaz

Tiny Koh Mak was our first stop when island hopping the Koh Chang Archipelago.

With hindsight this was the right choice because all we wanted to do was to wind down and relax after the long flight. Plubpla was perfect for this - as was Koh Mak in general.

Plubpla Retreat is, as far as we could see, the only boutique style resort on the island. We had a bungalow right by the beach, which was spacious, had a comfy bed and an outdoor jacuzzi (which, however, we never used). The room was clean, well maintained and very light due to the large windows. The aircon worked well though it was somewhat noisy.

Staff was friendly and helpful, they picked us up from the ferry with no additional charge, took care of our ferry booking for the next step and and saw to that we got onto the right boat.
We rented a scooter to explore the island and checked out some of the other options, too. We did not regret that we chose Plubpla.

Some minor let-downs: the beach was rather poor (rocky and grey sand) but the pool made up for this. Also the restaurant had much more potential we felt. We only came there to eat but the owner should consider hosting a sundowner cocktail, play some lounge music and have a real bar installed (there are no other options nearby!).

Room Tip: All rooms have some kind of sea view. We saw no need for the jacuzzi.

We read all the reviews and convinced ourselves this was the best hotel on the island. If you really want to think this then arrive in the morning and salivate over the golden deserted beaches and luxurious infinity pool but be sure to leave by lunch time: you see, by lunchtime the tide is out and the golden-ish sandy shore reaches out to a rocky/muddy underworld. It is what it is and that's nature or you but I promise you it kicks into touch the idea of a midnight swim in the sea.
The resort is modern and clean. The staff manager, Beer, has been replaced by Ball. Ball is very friendly and helpful and he knows what is going on. The other staff try to be helpful but are overly deferential and seem to be in a permanent state of misery which is probably due to the female owner of the resort who sits there all day but fails to inspire anyone struggling to make it in the hotel industry.
Down to details: the decking area around the pool needs maintenance or some American is going to sue them when their ankles crash through the splintering wood. The jacuzzi outside the room is a great idea but there seems to be some coveted, secret rules about how to operate it (draining it, the lights and pump). What about an instruction manual in lieu of having to make the daily pilgrimage to reception to ask them how to plug the thing. It's all a little stingy: ONE glass of juice for breakfast, one towel, one tiny bar of soap in your bedroom. Shampoo? Nope, use the soap. All this is fine if it were it an Eco resort saving the planet but at these prices this is called "meanness". Having said all this the food menu is extensive and excellent.
Wrapping that all up: it is a good place to stay and for all its faults this is a resort operating in the tiny island of Ko Maak so you need to bare that in mind. If the "stingy" issue were dealt with and they sorted out the decking by the pool then I would forgive them the beach and catch a taxi for £1 to the beach where u arrive on the island which is beautiful. The Thai massages are excellent and they cost £2 for an hour which is absurd.
