Travelled around Thailand for 27 days and after Koh Chang decided to try here. Initially it was over our budget as we had been paying approx £25.00 a night in decent hotels & this was about £60.00 but considering what you pay for a Travel Lodge over here decided to book it . We did it online ourselves about a week before, while in Koh Chang.
Arrived by speed boat & the pier is where the resort is, so you just walk along the pier & are there. We had booked a beach front bungalow ( No 2) and it was wonderful. The bungalows are not as plush as the photos indicate more like " chabby chic" .Paint peeling a little but don't be put off , you have your own verandah with sun beds. It is a one room with a kingsize bed & a bathroom off it. Hardly any wardrobe space but you only need a few pairs of shorts & tee shirts, the Island is very laid back. We had breakfast included but mainly ate at night behind the hotel where there are three small thai restaurants serving good cheap food. I liked the choice of having a swimming pool as well as the beach. The beach is ok but just to plunge & cool off in the pool was great. At night you could hear the sea & the view was wonderful. Initially we had only booked three days but we loved it so much ended up staying five. That said there is not a lot to do on Koh Mak. We took a motorbike out but brought it back after a couple of hours , the roads are bad & really there is nothing else to see, this is the best area to be in. Down the beach are another few resorts which you can stroll to & eat but take a torch if you go along at night. Normally we are busy people & I like to be busy but found this place heaven. We got up had breakfast, sat on our verandah reading, swimming, walked along the beach ate @ the restaurants at night, usually sat drinking our own balcony by ten. I still cant believe I wasnt bored !!
There is a small shop attached to the resort & one on the road behind, they sell some supplies. There is no facility to change any money on the island so make sure you take enough. We had fetched with us some wine & spirits with us from Koh Chang and just bought beers & coke from the shop & put them in our fridge
Two nights we had a power cut for about five minutes ( while i was in the shower) it seemed to be @ approx six when everyone had a shower & the power surge tripped all the electric off but it was soon on again, just remember your torch !!!

We found Makathanee through our internet search on Koh Mak.
visually the pictures are spot on. it is a beautiful place to look at.
We prebooked as this would be the last place we would stay after travelling for over 5 weeks.

Koh Mak is not the easiest island to get to compared to say koh chang, Koh Toa etc but then if you want something less commercial and low key then this is the island for you.

Good things about this resort-
location
visual beautiful
food - excellent

poor things about resort -

new construction which dominates the bungalows and is right next to rooms by pool.
options for privacy in rooms are - curtains open or curtains closed.

the one that led us to leave and go to a different resort -

the most miserable staff with poor service that we experienced in our whole trip. Astonishing!!!
Alot of scandanavians seem appear to stay at this resort, so they may have a contract gauranteeing business. But never the less you just come away feeling that thye havenot incliation to engage with you at all. You are just another person with ATM on your forehead.

Those of you who are more service orientated dont go here.

We moved to a different resort and it was fabulous, a complete contrast in service, amazing service and fabulous accomodation.
i have added it to the accomodation list.

We spent a week on Koh Mak Island, and really felt that the Makathanee was the best place there. It is set right on the beach with a beautiful view, and the beach villas are so clean and comfortable. We had a large comfy bed, hot water shower, and huge windowrs overlooking our veranda and the ocean. The staff at the Makathanee is what makes it really special. The staff is so friendly and polite, and will do anything to make you feel at home. The restaurant is OK, I won't say great, but it did serve food that won't make you sick. My husband did get really, really sick from eating out on the island, but it wasn't from the Makathanee, and the staff helped us a lot when he was sick.

I am rating the hotel here highly and giving it 4 stars, but I would not rate Koh Mak Island itself highly. First of all it is too isolated - you have to travel one hour by speed boat to get there (beware if you get motion sick), and once on the island there is not anything. So if you need to buy a phone card, exchage money, buy flip flops or a T-shirt, etc - anything, it is NOT available on the island. Sunscreen was $15 to $20 because they have to import everything by boat. The food is cheap, but be careful where you eat, as my husband got really sick. ** There is no hospital on the island and no doctor, only 3 nurses, so do not go if you have a medical condition. When my husband was sick they took him to the clinic, which was...empty. We had to wait a while for even a nurse to arrive, and their medicine is rudimentary.
There is also very little to do on the island - you can walk around the island, but biking is hard because the roads are broken dirt roads. You can kayak, but other than that and sitting outside reading there is nothing to do. We went snorkeling and had the worst experience of our lives because it is on this old boat that takes hours to get anywhere and we were so sick - I threw up for the entire 6 hours of the trip - NOT worth it at all.
The beach is also not very good. It is pretty to look at, but is stoney and rocky, and if you go very far out you can run into sea urchins. There is also no waves which makes the beach kind of dull.

At night there is only one place on the island that is open - Monkey Island - and that gets old after going once.

All in all I would NOT recommend this as a honeymoon spot. Young couples need more interesting things to go out and do together like shows, restaurants museums, shopping and Koh Mak certainly doesn't have it....and to travel to another island like Koh Chang or Koh Kood costs about $70 round trip for 2 people so you are stuck on Koh Mak.

But, if you are coming to Koh Mak, stay in the Makathanee, definitely!!
