“Undoubtly the best place to stay on Koh Mak”
Reviewed January 6, 2010

Koh Mak still feels like a Thai Island and The Big Easy has the best food, the friendliest hosts, the nicest beach and the most amazing bungalows on the Island. The rooms are immaculate and cavernous with the best appointed bathroom we have seen in a beach bungalow (see pictures).
The Big Easy is run by Noodeng and Paul who are fantastic hosts and make you feel really welcome. Noodeng is in charge of the restaurant and her food is the best we have tasted. If you stay you have to try the Laab and the Papya Salad.
The Big Easy is located on the best side of the Island as the resorts on the other side get battered by strong winds and choppy seas.
We will definitely return to Koh Mak and the Big Easy as it is probably one of the last unspoilt Thai Islands.

We absolutely loved our time at the Big Easy on Koh Mak. We had reached the end of our trip with extra funds, so checked out every accommodation place on Koh Mak to find the best one to 'splurge' on. The Big Easy was hands down the best place.

We had the front bungalow and it was brilliant - huge, high ceilings, french doors, fantastic stone sunken bathroom, beautifully decorated, big balcony with hammock and chair, all 15 metres from the water. The beach was immaculate (staff clean it in the early hours every day) and the bungalow and restaurant were spotless.

The family who run it are wonderful - laid back and friendly but very organised and very good at what they do. Big Easy has a wonderful atmosphere... we spent every day taking it easy - reading (they have a stash of books and mags), laying around, swimming, walking to the island (watch out for the sea urchins!) and eating and drinking.

Every single meal we ate there was fantastic (I really recommend the soups, the whole fish and the prawns!) and the beers were well priced - they just got added to our tab (paid for everything when we checked out). Scott was on crutches and restaurant staff kindly brought beer across to our bungalow during the day.

I honestly can't say enough about the Big Easy and highly recommend it. We're hoping to come back to Thailand next year and plan on visiting the Big Easy again.

Me and my family stayed on Bigeasy from 17 Nov-6 Dec 2009, and it was a total expierience of good food (thanks Noodang, and your beautiful staff) , good music (thanks Paul) and a perfect place for families with children, the bungalows are placed perfect so you can put your children to sleep and still have an eye on the bungalow sitting in the best restaurant on the island and enjoying adult-time. The owners Paul and Noodang give and excellent service and really make sure you have the best time. Their restaurant is a chapter for it self, it serves the best thai food recommend the big easy snack, the ribs with mashed potatoes, and the isaan food is simply heaven.
Our daughter had the best time ever, allways other children to play with and the beach is perfect for small children, crystal clear water and 2 good hammocks.
The bungalows are big, clean, and stylish and has a veranda to sit and enjoy the view and the sunsets...the most beautiful sight you ever seen.
We enjoyed kayaking to koh rayang, and just told Paul and Noodang what we needed such as manicure, massage and pedicure and they arranged everything for us.
We have travelled for many years in Thailand with and without children and this place really offers something special.. Thank you, for letting us feel at home, we enjoyed every second. see you..

We stayed at Big Easy for five nights in December 2009 and it was hard to leave. The bungalows are huge and stylish - each with their own veranda with hammock, table and chair and a bench.

Paul and Nuden really know how to look after their guests, without being over the top. Nudem is a fabulous cook and her team (including her sister Dao) prepare meals throughout the day. The large open plan restaurant is a great place to get a bit of shade and to chill out listening to music. There are toys for younger children who were welcomed throughout the resort.

Big Easy is chilled out in the extreme - it is at the end of the Ao Prao beach so doesnt have anybody trying to sell you things or hassle you in anyway. If there are things you want to do Paul and Nuden arrange them for you individually, for example a massage on the beach that was amazing. Nuden organised a snorkelling and fishing trip for the two of us in a small boat, with a local man who spoke no English but nevertheless made us laugh, helped us feel confident and taught us how to fish. This was quite a feat as we are two women who had never fished, wouldn't touch the squid bate and were both pretty nervous snorkelling. When we returned with our catch (8 fish) Nudem cooked us a wonderful fish curry.

This is an excellent resort that deserves to prosper. Thanks to you all

We stayed here for 6 nights, 14th November – 19th November 2009.
RESORT – This is less of a resort and more a small bunch of really cool wooden bungalows with a vast open wooden restaurant. We stayed in Bungalow 2 right on the beach, and about 10 steps from the restaurant. The bungalow is one room with a bathroom, uniquely designed, spacious, the furniture is simple, but is everything you need. Air con is good, the bathrooms are modern and have hot water. There is a spacious balcony, with hammock and table and a bench – perfect for chilling out when the sun is going down. We think Bungalows 1 and 2 are better, they cost more as they are on the beach. The others are literally a few steps away though so they would be cool too.

Big Easy is totally relaxed, there are no rules, you can do as you please, you end up feeling very comfortable there.

The beach is perfect, soft sand, no hard coral. It is on the end of the beach and you only get a few people every now and again wondering up to have a look or have some lunch. No sales people trying to sell food etc, it is very peaceful.

The sea is crystal clear, warm, and fairly shallow. Depending on the tide, we had to walk for a while to get to swimming depth! There is a small uninhabited island very close, and another, Koh Rayong behind it which is worth kayaking too. You pay a bit on the island and you can have lunch there. There is a reef, we saw a squid, sea urchins, sea cucumbers and some stripy fish when we snorkelled.

LOCATION – Koh Mak is a 40 minute speedboat trip from Laem Ngop port. Laem Ngop port is 20km in a taxi from trat airport. It cost about £18 each to get to Koh mak from Trat airport. All easy enough to do as you go along.

Koh Mak is a fairly small island, it has around 20 resorts on it. On our beach, the South Western beach, there were about ten, you can drop into any of them for food etc. There is also a mini high street if you cut through Makanathee resort, with a couple of small quiet bars and restaurants.

FOOD – The Big Easy food is amazing, we made the mistake of eating elsewhere for a night as we wished we ate there everynight! Paul and Nudem run Big Easy and it works really well. The best thai food, seafood, king prawns are amazing. Banana milkshakes are also the best!

EXCURSIONS – It is really quiet, and they are starting to do a bit more…we did a thai cookery school which is highly recommended ttp://www.smilekohmak.com/classes.aspx
You learn to cook really nice thai dishes, then eat them as the sun is going down. It was brilliant, and the teacher is lovely.
The kayaking to Koh Rayong was good, there is only one resort, it is really quiet and pretty.
Some people we met hired out mopeds for the day too.

WEATHER - It was clear blue skies all day, every day. Very very hot, sometimes unbearable – so the sea is very useful! Sun went down around 5.30. Recommend taking a very high Deet insect repellent.

SERVICE – Paul and Nudem run it, they are very welcoming. Their staff are really efficient too. They were all a pleasure!

ENTERTAINMENT – Monkey Island resort have live music which is good, on the whole, Koh Mak is great for a complete chill out.

Highly recommend – we really want to go back with our friends! Don’t stay anywhere else. Make sure you take cash to pay, no credit card payments.

We travelled to this resort in August 2009 as part of our honeymoon. We spent the whole month of August travelling Thailand, and this was our last stop....let me tell you, it was a perfect ending to an amazing trip. Koh Mak itself is a very small island, about 16km sq, with lots of local people and isn't run over by tourists yet which is nice! When we got to the island we were greated at the pier by Paul (owner) who drove us to the resort. The bungalow we booked was the beach bungalow, and it was literally directly on the beach!! All the other bungalows are only a stones throw away, but the first one is the closest. It really nice too, because you can walk all the way down the beach and look at the other resort, and you can tell how much better they care for the beach at this resort. A lot of the other resorts beaches were dirty, full of branches, rocks, and garbage....but at the Big Easy they keep the beach very clean and well maintainted! The bungalow itself is great, nice and big, looks like a wood cabin, and had a beautiful big bathroom! The resort it very small, it consists of about 6 bungalows and one restaurant. It is run by Paul and Nuden and their family, and honestly, they are a big part of what made our stay so amazing! The food they cook is unreal first off! But the hospitality they show is incredible....it honestly felt as though we were staying with our own family! They are so welcoming, kind, fun, and really will try to get you anything you ask for! It was actually quite funny, we wanted to pay in advance for the 5 nights we stayed there, and Nuden laughed at us....told us not to worry until we check out...which is a HUUUUGE change from the other places we stayed in Thailand! This resort is honestly the most perfect place for an extremely relaxing, quiet, and amazing vacation.....If you are looking for places to stay in Koh Mak, honestly, don't look anywhere else...this resort is perfect!!! We are hoping to be able to return to Thailand again one day, and if we do we will definately be staying at the Big Easy again!!

We stayed in the beach front bungalow for three nights in April and really loved it. All the staff were really friendly and welcoming, the food was really good (best vegetable spring rolls we've ever tasted!) and the vibe was really relaxed. Our bungalow was spacious and really clean.
Will definitely try and visit the Big Easy again in the future.
