“Ideal for a quiet getaway - don't come here to party”
Reviewed March 18, 2009

We came seeking some low-cost winter sun and were pleasantly surprised by this hotel having had a disastrous '5*' out-of-season holiday in Turkey a few years ago.
It is a long way from the party hot-spots (and airport) of the south but we knew that before we booked.
We had hired a car so getting about was really easy for us (and the hotel car-park is free), however there are buses every 20 minutes to take you to the busier resorts/Santa Cruz/Mount Tiede. Because we came in low season on an all-inclusive basis the meals did get a bit repetitive, but there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance. All in all I would say this hotel was excellent value for money, the staff were friendly, the accomodation clean and comfortable. It is not out-and-out luxury but you really can't expect 5* accomodation at 3* prices. I think the 4* rating is fair. If you decide to stay here - definitely make at least one trip to Santa Cruz, also Loro Parque was excellent and Mount Tiede national Park. There is a lot more to Tenerife than beer & beaches.

Our week at this hotel was very enjoyable. Bedrooms were large, clean and with a seaview balcony overlooking the Atlantic.Staff were universally friendly and helpful.

English people were in a minority, with Spanish and German guests in preponderance.
Average age of the clientele was probably mid-fifties,but with a fair sprinkling of children and younger couples.

Breakfast included full English, with bacon, eggs, sausages, tomatoes, baked beans, mushrooms - and the usual cheeses and ham buffet if wanted.

We skipped lunches - all inclusive plays havoc with the waistline. If you wished,a lunch barbecue was available every day - but prebook the day before.

Dinner was somewhat plain, but meals included excellent veal, pork and lamb, with stews as well. You certainly won't go hungry but the food was not haute cusine.Pizza and pasta was available every night.

Carafes of red.white and rose were freely available and were quite drinkable.

The animation teams worked hard during the day and at night staged song and dance shows,if that was what you wanted.

The pool bar was open all day, snacks included hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza and sandwiches. After 5pm the action switched to the indoor bar.A wide range of drinks were available, together with nuts, crisps and olives if you hadn't eaten enough of breakfast, lunch, dinner and the free snacks at the pool bar.

Pool area was pleasant with plenty of flowers on display. Weather was hot - we had to keep ducking into the shade.Tenerife is a windy location year round, which misleadingly cools the impact of the sun.Like most places these days the pool was cold - only the hardiest tried a swim.

Not too much to do locally.Excellent low cost buses ran frequently all round the Island,so if you were prepared to leave the hotel more active resorts were within 30 minutes reach.Taxis were very cheap.

As with most of Tenerife beaches were rocky and sand was black volcanic. The beach wasn't really an option at the hotel.

All in all a most enjoyable and relaxing week.

I visited the Hotel Catalonia Punta Del Rey on Boxing day for a week away in Tenerife for the sun & new year.

The hotel is approx 30 miles (40mins) away from the main Tenerife (TFS)airport. A taxi costs 50 euros each way. My advice is go to the bus station area at the airport and get a number 341 to Santa Cruz bus station 6 euros (50mins) and then get a bus 122/123 or 124 to Las Caletillas 2 euros (15mins). Sounds complicated but believe me is easy and far cheaper. The bus stop is just before the hotel. Its the stop after McDonalds at the bottom of the hill.

On arrival the staff are very friendly & helpful.

It is occupied with various people from differant countries (British, German, Russian, Spanish, Italian).

The hotel is 4*. However, 4*is not the same as here in England. Its more like 2-3*. Its is an all inclusive hotel so beware if booking a B&B, H/B or F/B. You can pay for things at the bar or restaurant with euro's. A beer costs just over a euro for a small glass. Slice of pizza or plate of chips is approx 3 euro's

The rooms are standard but quite large. There are 2 twin beds, Big bathroom with shower & bath, Televisin with only Sky news, BBC world news, FOX & Eurosport in english. A balcony that overlooks either the sea or swimming pool. Can see the mountains also from any room.

The hotel has 2 main pools in the large sun bathing area. Lots of sunbeds.

There is a further swimming pool in the rock cliff face terraced sun bathing area accross the road from the hotel.

There is no beach!!!

The hotel has a tennis court, bowling green & crazy mini golf.

The evening entertainment is in English but they cater for all languages. Its not very good typically corney!!!!

When you go outside the hotel there is nothing really to do. Honest its like a ghost town. There are no bars in the town that show any sports channel.

This is a hotel that is suitable for a relaxing holiday wether your on your own or with the family. But beware there is nothing to outside the hotel.

  • Liked — Staff friendly and rooms cleaned every day.
  • Disliked — Its situated in the middle of nowher. Ghost town.

I visited this hotel for a first trip away with my partner. It was meant to be special but failed miserably on all accounts. I didn't read any reviews prior to booking...........big mistake. All of the critiscisms are fully justified, this hotel was terrible........the worst place I have ever had the misfortune to stay at!
The food was self service slop and the dormitory eating was less than civilised, around 200 seats.........more like a cattle market!
The hotel catered mainly for retired, elderly Spanish, probably 90%, the rest a mixed bag of nationalities, families and couples. No-one that we spoke to had a good word to say about the place.
The sea water pool was filthy black and obviously hadn't been cleaned in a long while. It was like a surreal trip back to the sixties or seventies. This hotel isn't worth two stars let alone four.
There is nothing of any virtue in the locality and even a bus trip to the Island's capital, Santa Cruz proved particularly unfulfilling.
If you wish to visit Tenerife, stick to Las Americas or Los Christianos............at least at these places you get a huge choice of restaurants, bars, clubs, beaches, shops, accommodation etc. etc. These two destinations will at least guarantee satisfaction on a number of points!

After reading the other reviews on this hotel we expected the worst and ended up dreading our holiday . But, having had a more positive experience then we'd expected, we felt it important to make our view available.

So, seperating the hotel from the complete holiday experience we agree that the hotel isn't as bad as made out in some of the other reviews. The reason we felt it was important to seperate the two is that we understand that a holiday can be greatly influenced by a number of other factors e.g. a holiday is what you make of it , it can be made better by the people you meet, the weather, the other people in the hotel, the food, the local area etc. However, a hotel is what it is!

With regards to the latter. Our entire party agreed we couldn't fault the hotel on its food. The restaurant opened three times a day and offered buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast consisted of a choice between a cooked hot breakfast (including eggs, bacon, sausage, beans etc) or a continental breakfast of ham, croissants, salami, cheese, rolls, jam, butter, cereal plus hot drinks or juice.

In addition to the meals available from the restaurant, the pool bar offered a number of snacks including pizza, burger, chips, chicken, salad and sausage etc.

Lunch and dinner offered a fantastic salad bar, bread, soup, fish, meat , wine and water. Plus in the evening freshly made pizza, french bread and pasta was also available. Also, most nights there was also a vegeterian choice. During our stay we saw caviar, tuna, paella, seabass, mackerel, cauliflower cheese, spinach canelloni and lots more.

Plus for pudding....fruit, (melon, orange, kiwi, apple, pear, salad) jelly, creme caramel, blamange, instant whip, ice cream, yogurt, strudell, custard, rice pudding etc, etc.

With regards to entertainment.......... We can't criticise the entertainment staff directly, as the entertainment was ok and the staff were friendly, however it has to be said that though the daytime activities were ok (bowling, table tennis, pool, bingo, darts etc) the evening activities were only ok if you were spanish!

Turning our attention to the facilities, our reaction has to be luke warm as what is available was simply ok! The pool tables were often out of order as the balls kept disappearing! The crazy golf course is at least ten years beyond its best.; rips and chunks missing abound. The main swimming pool is obviously chilled which was surprising given the cool weather. Plus the gym offers a squeaky bike, running machine and a mediocre weight machine.

With regards to the rooms. Again, we were plesantly supprised as the photos which were displayed on line showed mouldy old paint work. However we only saw freshly tiled bathrooms and clean bed rooms.

Overall we were impressed with the room.

And what about the local area?

The beach at Playa De Las Teresitas is fantastic and well worth a visit! We got there by bus via Santa Cruz., which are regular and cheap!

Candalaria itself is ok and there are a number of bars and restaurants en route from the hotel to the resort of Canalaria. The harbour and its statues are also well worth a visit.

Other than that, as a result of a number of rainy days we hired a car and visited Playa De Las Americas and Los Christianos and have to say that we were really happy with these trips. Not least because we enjoyed ourselves whilst we were there and the weather was great.

At the end of our holiday we agreed that the hotel is ok! The area is also ok! And most of all the holiday was ok but only if you consider all aspects of it!!

Well what can I say, this is a great place. We went with our 4 boys ages 13, 5, 3 & 1. Ignore what others write, the staff/food are exceptional. Rooms all tidy, pool wonderfull. Not a bad word can be said. Not many english, but at times I feel that this is good as you really get the whole spanish feel.
