Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea
Ranked #1 of 9 Hotels in Sweimah
Reviewed October 12, 2009

We stayed at the Kempinski Ishtar for two nights following business meetings in Jordan. It's less than an hour drive from downtown Amman to the Kempinski. The location right on the Dead Sea is nothing less than fabulous and the grounds are vast and very well laid out. it's a truly beautiful hotel -- the lower building is in a more traditional style and this is where we entered when we first arrived. The upper building is much more sleek and modern, and gives you a very different feel. Upon check-in we were upgraded to junior suites (it was during Ramadan and a bit slow); rooms were spacious and elegant, however, I found them to be a bit too cold and impersonal. All the pools were beautifully done and provided breath-taking views of the Dead Sea. There are a few different restaurant choices in the hotel; we tried the Italian one by the lower pool and it was good. The very unfortunate bit is that the upper level restaurant in the lower level building (!) is the main restaurant for breakfast (and lunch and dinner if you please) - but it's badly furnished with plastic chairs, poor acoustics, so-so buffet, and an overall cheap feel to it -- no ambiance what so ever. Service was generally good, but not top-notch. I would return as I found parts of the hotel irresistible and very relaxing; but I would have second thoughts about paying top dollar as the area generally is becoming more competitive. A location on the Dead Sea also provides a nice departure for a Petra trip; plus, then you can really relax the day after by soaking in the Dead Sea!

The hotel is situated at the Jordan hotel strip in the northern part of the dead sea, together with several other hotels. It's relatively new (2006 built?) but it's styling is completely different, i.e. modern and stylish compared to the other more family styled with Arabic notes. Our room was very well equipped with the best beds of our whole trip. Also big bath with lots of dead sea salts to choose from! The in-hotel Thai restaurant was top class and a real relief from the Arabic food choices before. The staff is very helpful & friendly without being intrusive. Several swimming pools (we saw 5 different ones but from the map appears there are even more) and of course the traditional mud smearing dip into the dead sea was there. Only drawback was in our eyes very high costs of the Antara Spa - unless you are used to spending $300 (JOD 140) for a massage (with drink afterward). Complimentary internet, mini-bar, all the 5-star amenities. We had a very relaxing 2 nights after Amman & Petra.

What a glamorous place. The design is sleek and modern yet with warm tones. I don't agree that it is impersonal or lacks a human feeling. We were greeted with juice and a refreshing towel. Check in was swift and efficient. We were taken to our room which was very spacious with a large terrace overlooking the Dead Sea and the pool/garden area. The bathroom was HUGE and very glamorous. Unfortunately I didn't get to do much more as I spent the entire day in bed with gastroentiritis after making the mistake of brushing my teeth with the tap water at the Four Seasons Amman that morning. BIG MISTAKE. But I mention it only because the staff at the Ishtar took care of me right away. They sent for a doctor from Amman who was brilliant and room service was attentive and helpful with whatever I needed. The bed was very comfortable and the linens fresh and crispy in white. After one night I was as right as rain and unfortunately checking out. We would definitely come back here and stay for a couple of days just to enjoy the resort. True there is no where to go outside the property but who cares? This is a place you come to enjoy the facilities and then move on to the sites of Jordan.

SERVICE/FOOD: all great! in fact, our favorite breakfast throughout our Jordan/Egypt trip was here
LOCATION: Amazing. I really don't understand why people stay in Madaba or Amman as a starting/central point throughout their Jordan stay. Madaba is a small but congested, hectic and unscenic location. Amman (haven't been) but hear it's crazy busy. Why don't people stay here where they can relax at the Dead Sea in a quiet, scenic, beautiful, amazing place that's quite close to many of the norther Jordan sites (10 min from Bethany Beyond & Panoramic Dead Sea View, about 30 min from Madaba & Mt nebo, 3.5 hrs from Aqaba)
EXTRA FACTOR: loved the fact that we could just walk down to the beach and float in the Dea Sea after lathering ourselves with Dead Sea mud while overlooking into Jerusalem, Bethlehem & Jericho. How amazing is that! They also have this amazing infinity pool that's open til 11pm and you can jus relax whlie looking into the Dead Sea!
LASTLY: We only stayed here one night on our 4nt/5 day stay in Jordan and would definitely stay here again if we came back. Wouldn't stay here for the entire stay as we found it easier to stay in the various other hotels throughout Jordan (Kempinski Dead Sea 1nt, Petra Movenpick 1nt, Wadi Rum desert 1nt, Hammamet Main 1nt)

My husband and I spent one night at the Kempinski Ishtar Dead Sea. It is really a beautiful property. The swiming pools (the Infinity pool very romantic at sundown), water fountains, and manicured gardens were gorgeous. The room was very comfortable with a nice size balcony, complimentary mini bar with juices, water and refreshments. Large, excellent bathroom with separate shower, bathtub and great toiletries. Separate dressing area with large closet space.

The Dead Sea is an experience not to be missed. Use the mud provided by the hotel and cover your body. Let it dry and then go in for a very, very unique experience. Watch your eyes and mouth, the salt content is very high .

The buffet breakfast was excellent with many selections. We had dinner at their main restaurant at the extensive buffet with many International selections as well as MiddleEastern food. The food was okay, nothing to write home about. Rather pricey,$37 Dinar ($53 US) per person and alcoholic beverages were outrageous. Two glasses of wine were $31.US.

If we went back I would not eat at the buffet but try one of the other restaurants and order a la carte instead.

The Kempinski is truly a beautiful resort worth the stay! We highly recommend it and would stay here again if we ever went back!!!!!!

We check-in and were shocked from the first moment we entered the room .. even before al the space in the hotel is decorated trully wow! The room is big .. and has very nice .. gives you so much relax just to look at the decoration , the bathroom its a dream !!
shower cabine I have never seen anyhting more beautiful .. and the bath tab is for the honemooners to stay togetehr hours :) even the level of the tab is lower than the floor , which looks really inviting , and all of these with a nice smell sticks everywhere in the room and the bath !!! I belive all the rooms have sea views, also I liked the staff so much !
The area is so big and veeeery beautiful ! The smart design of the pool gives you impression that you swim just in the sea, beacuse you cannot see the line when you watch between the sea and the pool , very smart idea, also they have very nice children pool. So many gardens and trees make this hotel so wonderful ! In addition to all there is Dead sea with healthy mad, which is brough by hotel every day new and there is shower to clean this mad, and there is funny swimming in the Dead sea itself .. and all of these we had with 200 dol per night ... it was really wow ..

Having been in the industry for a very long time, it takes a lot to impress me!

Upon check-in, the staff were very friendly and professional....

Throughout the stay, I had a mud treatment on the beach which was great! Despite the silly look!

The service is second to none, the staff are all very friendly, the detail in the rooms is excellent.

It was a flying visit, as I had to return to work in Egypt.

Excellent - can't wait to come back again!

Many thanks team!!!
