We are regular visitors to Monteiths and used to always be happy with the food and level of service. However recently it seems to have gone to the pack. We dined on a Sunday night, the restaurant was about half full. When we arrived a very stressed out man told us he couldn't seat us and we'd "just have to sit on the couch and wait" - no apology, no offer of a drink, nothing. We waited, then finally got collected and handed two menus, then pointed to a table. We weren't shown to it, it wasn't even set. No water on the table, none ever appeared. So we took ourselves and our menus to our table. The restaurant was very cold, so we asked the stressed out bloke if he could turn the heater on the wall on. He replied that if he turned it on, the diners at another table would get too hot. I pointed out that several diners at other tables had their jackets on due to the cold but he wouldn't turn it on. Keeping in mind, this is a restaurant in the heart of Alexandra, where the weather gets extremely cold in winter - wouldn't you place the tables so the heater COULD be turned on?!) By this stage we were just laughing about the ridiculous level of service. Probably should have walked out but we wondered what would happen next. The food came and it was pretty average. They used to have beautiful blue cod but this time it was tasteless and greasy. When Stressed Out Man came to check if our meals were okay, I mentioned the fish wasn't up to its usual standard. "I'll tell the chef" he replied and wandered off. We were never offered more drinks, or desert. The whole thing was a farce. Extremely disappointing.
