“Cozy and Simple getaway”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 8, 2011

Read these reviews and decided to stay here for a few nights while doing stuff in Monteverde. For $45 a night total, we got what we paid for and was quite impressed for such a cheap place. As people said, the place in ran by Vitalis (owner) and his son and both are very friendly and eager to help and totally sociable with all of his guests. Vitalis booked a tour for us with 10% discount and we did nothing. He is also the chef and made us a wonderful simple breakfast each morning (fruit, eggs, bread, and coffee or juice).

The rooms are simple and worked for us. No air conditioning thought but you don't really need it since it's pretty cool at night at such high elevation. They do have hot water, but one minor complaint is that the water pressure is not that strong. There is no fridge or Internet in the rooms but you can get Internet in the lobby. Good for simple people with a budget when going to Monteverde.

If you want a quiet place to relax while in Monteverde the Sunset Hotel is the place for you. The rooms are reasonably priced and come with breakfast. The rooms don't have tv or air conditioning but you don't need either there. The owner, Vitalis, gave us good information on which tours to take and also made the arrangements for us. He also gave us wine glasses and a plate for our cheese and bread for our happy hour picnics on the porch. This is not a luxury hotel but a good, clean, quiet place to stay. The only negative comment I have is the mattress in our room was not wonderful, but we found about the same in other places we stayed in Costa Rica.

We stayed here for 2 nights while exploring beautiful Monteverde . The hotel has a wonderful wiev and there is a very nice terrace overlooking the beautiful garden.
The rooms are big and clean and the shower is very good. The breakfast in the morning is delicious made on the spot for you by the very friendly owner of the hotel.
The location is not in the center , takes around 20 minutes to walk and the walk back can be rough because it is uphill. There are taxis you can take if you want but we had no problems with walking . I absolutley rekommend this hotel .

- Run by father-son family who migrated from Germany about 50-60 years ago!
- Excellent views of the sea about 1 hour away
- Very nice garden that brings in birds and other animals.
- Can trek in their private forest with streams, wildlife
- Can arrange adventure trips from their desk; very close to the reserve entrance for adventure activities and trails
- Family went out of their way to serve us breakfast at about 11.30am after all our adventure activities.
- Santa Elena town is charming with nice restaurant (Don Juan) and shopping.

Very friendly staff, really good breakfast, nice and clean little room, there is a path behind the hotel to walk in the nature. We only stayed one night. Booked through him for your activities, we did the canopy (zip line) which was probably the best we had done (well, the setting is quite unique!)
Definitely recommend it.

Very nice accomodation, lovely view, tasty breakfast, and great hospitality from Vitalis and his family.

Room Tip: Take a tour at the trail - back side of the hotel.

Beautiful setting, great views. Rooms are simple, but modern, clean; comfortable beds. Owners are helpful, got 10% off of all excursions booked at the hotel. Small, family atmosphere, felt like one of the family. Only drawback - without a car getting there is tough. With a car, it's close and convenient to all! A bit difficult to find, but worth the search! Highly recommended!
Because of the climate, would have been nice to have a small frig in the room

Room Tip: All rooms are great.
