Hotel Claro de Luna
Ranked #17 of 42 Monteverde B&B and Inns
Reviewed September 5, 2009

This B&B was awesome. We stayed two nights and explored Santa Elena & Monteverde. When we checked in we made our 'adventure' reservations with the front desk. It was very easy and convenient and the adventure companies either came and picked us up or the front desk called a taxi for us. Our room was upstairs with a private bath and the only drawback was that you could hear the neighbor next door as the walls were thin. Breakfast in the morning was yummy. You could walk up and get juice and fruit but you could also choose your cooked breakfast items from a limited menu the night before and state what time you wanted them, or arrive and choose your items to be cooked. The morning kitchen staff would also make you a sandwich for lunch to go if you wanted. This B&B was up a very steep dirt hill/back road from the center of town, but I highly recommend it - if you can handle the walk! It was quiet at night and a 5 minute walk from the center of town.

We only stayed one night, but were impressed by the calm and tranquil atmosphere at Claro de Luna. Although having said that, a number of our fellow guests were late back and the noise certainly travelled along the corridors, so we were woken more than once. The staff were very helpful and the place was spotlessly clean. It was slightly ironic that the notices in bathrooms asked you to re-use towels, to save water, but the garden (and carpark) was thoroughly watered in the evening - meaning that we had to run the gauntlet to avoid getting soaked!

The hotel is cute and has a cozy feel to it. However, we first booked a room on the first floor and it was of course raining. The room had an uncomfortably strong smell of mildew. If I recall correctly the converted "house" was in a hill so the entrance to our room was from the ground but it was kind of like being in a basement. The rooms was dark and we had very tiny windows. The next day we asked for a room on the upper floors. We were told the only room that was left was very small but we took it bc the mildew in the other room was terrible. The second room definitely was small (we literally crawled over our luggage) but cute and we had no problems otherwise. They cook your breakfast to order and assist with directions around the city and out of the city. Overall, once we switched rooms we enjoyed it, esp since it was one of the cheapest places we stayed in CR. The location is down a dirt road and is pretty quiet, esp @ night. We even saw a sloth hanging out in the trees right down the road.

I also highly recommend Sofia's Restaurant in Monteverde, not too far from Claro de Luna. I can't remember exactly why, but Sofia's was one of the most memorable restaurants I've ever been to, literally, in the world. It's simple Costa Rican fusion, but they had such great blends of foods, and I especially remember their cream soup. It is also down a long dirt road, much like most places in Monteverde.

The place is basically an old house converted into a hotel. I was on the 1st floor and could hear EVERYTHING going on above me and I'm sure others could hear me as well! If you like that sort of thing this place is perfect for you, but not me. It is a short 5 min walk into town (restaurants and shops). Not much nightlife goes on here so don't expect any late nights.

The front porch area was a cool place to hang out and have a few sunset cocktails and the breakfast was great for $5 (coffee, juice, eggs, bread and bacon or pancakes).

This Hotel was a terrible disappointment and the worst of five hotels we visited on our honeymoon. We attempted to leave after the first night, but the owner refused to refund our second night, despite multiple bug bites appearing on my arms overnight.
The rooms were not clean and only got more filled with bugs & beetles as night fell. We ended up pushing a towel under our door to prevent them from crawling under during the night.
While the location is convienent, an easy walk to the center of town, and breakfast plentiful, I would highly recommend selecting a different hotel.

The Monteverde / Santa Elena area is quite remote and lacking many tourist-y comforts. In this realm, Claro de Luna is a nice hotel in a nice setting. The location is close enough to walk the center of town (and all of its restaurants, shops, and tour offices) but also far enough away to avoid being mired in the hustle. Breakfast is absolutely fantastic, and English-speaking service and concierge help is always available.

Our room was cozy, clean, and comfortable, and while the hotel's management is clearly "going for it" on the B&B front, several major improvements should be made. For instance, the beds are not box-spring mattresses which is common in central America, but very plainly, not very comfortable. With plentiful hot water and good water pressure, we were pleased to take a long hot shower, but not pleased when a lack of proper ventilation lent to a slight moldy odor. At the very least, the windows should be fitted for screens to get some air without letting bugs in. These two problems detracted from the enjoyment of our stay, and made other very nice amenities such as fresh flowers less important.

Even so, we had a nice time at Claro de Luna and Monteverde, and would suggest both with qualifications regarding traveler expectations.

I stayed two nights here while on a tour with GAP Adventures. The rooms were very comfortable, the view from the balcony was great and the location was close enough to downtown Santa Elena to get their quickly, but quiet.
