We booked our 3 week holiday with Costa Rica Expeditions, who organised a fantastic itinerary, including our 4 nights at monteverde lodge. The hotel was a lovely place to stay, we stayed in a downstairs room which had a good view onto the garden, and we also spent one night in an upstairs room which had a nice balcony for bird watching. the staff were helpful and friendly; we had breakfast and dinner included, and the food was delicious - I would highly recommend the monteverde rolls for a starter. The gardens are lovely with some short trails on which plenty of birds and wildlife can be seen. We went for two brilliant hikes with Samuel as our guide - to the cloud forest and cura-cancha reserve - he was really knowledgeable and great at spotting all sorts of wildlife. We would highly recommend getting a guide for walks.

Dear Maggie625,

Thank you for the review, I am very glad to see that you enjoyed your 4 night stay. It sounds like you had lots of time to enjoy the hotel grounds and the gardens, and it’s great to see that you had some good wildlife sightings. Samuel is a great naturalist guide, and like you, we also recommend to visitors that they take a walk with him or one of his colleagues. All our guides live and work in Monteverde and the cloud forest every day, and there is no substitute when it comes to having them interpret the forest, and using all their experience to point out the wildlife for you.

It’s also great that you enjoyed the food! The Monteverde Rolls are a fun appetizer that our chef Federico came up with, that includes two unique rolls: one fried and one not, and one with shrimp, mixed veggies and onions while the other features pork, garlic and sweet peppers. Federico loves to experiment with ingredients, and we (and our guests) love to taste the results! For more reviews on his creations, or to share your own experience with the food, you can see the restaurant’s own Trip Advisor page: El Jardin at Monteverde Lodge & Gardens.

I hope the rest of your trip through Costa Rica was as much fun as your stay at Monteverde Lodge. Thanks again for writing about us!

Sincerely,

Natalie Ewing

We stayed at the lodge for 4 nights and really fell in love with the lodge. The staff was very friendly (they remembered my name and room number after only being there a day) and helpful and patient, the food excellent and the gardens beautiful. We also loved the fireplace and looked forward to sitting by it at the end of the day. There were many wonderful surprises such as the afternoon snacks at the bar and the fruit kabobs delivered to the jacuzzi area one afternoon when several of us were enjoying the jacuzzi. Carlos is a very excellent naturalist with a wonderfully pleasant personality. We plan to stay at the sister lodge in Tortugueuro in August. Thanks for making our trip to Monteverde so special.

Room Tip: Book a room with a balcony - it's worth the extra money

Dear Jenniferb2002,

Thank you for the review, it makes us feel very special to know that after a 4 day stay you feel such a deep connection to the Lodge. It is certainly a wonderful place to spend a few days. Reading your review it sounds like you had time to enjoy and connect with all aspects of what makes the Lodge unique. I am glad you enjoyed the open fireplace and the naturally filtered Jacuzzi in the evenings. It’s also great to know that you were able to explore the cloud forest with Carlos; he really is a remarkable naturalist guide, and very fun to be around.

We very much look forward to having you visit us at Tortuga Lodge & Gardens in August. If you want to read some guest experiences to get thinking about your trip, you can find that Lodge on Trip Advisor as well.

Thanks again for the review, and we’ll see you soon!

Sincerely,

We stayed here as part of our honeymoon in Costa Rica, and apart from the lack of clouds(!) it was perfect. Rooms were lovely, staff great and location stunning. A lovely quiet but bustling village with a great bar. The hotel restaurant was also excellent. Even saw an agouti and tapir in the gardens!

Dear Jimmyfarold,

Thanks for the review! It was great to see you enjoyed the Lodge and Santa Elena. I was also glad to read about the luck you had with animals in the garden.

The climate in Monteverde is certainly changing; the cloud forest is still the cloud forest, but clear sunny days are becoming more and more common.

Thanks again, we hope to have you back some day.

Sincerely,

Gerald Jimenez in the restaurant went to the ends of the earth to ensure our meals were to our satisfaction! His service was so outstanding, we couldn't wait to wake up and go to breakfast, just to see him and enjoy his friendly and exceptional service!! Beautiful grounds here as well and we were lucky enough to spot a Sloth out back! :-) Go and enjoy, it will delight you as well!!! We loved it! :-)

Dear 80Countries,

It’s great to read how much you loved Monteverde Lodge & Gardens. We are thrilled! Gerald is definitely a great person to interact with in the morning, as he arrives every day cheerful and looking forward to interacting with people from around the world. I’m glad you enjoyed his service, and I hope he had a chance to point out some birds in the garden. He’s developed a lot of knowledge about our most frequent winged visitors.

We hope you can come back and visit us again someday!

Sincerely,

We stayed two days with our teen daughters and had an amazing and relaxing stay. The hotel staff were very accommodating and their recommendation for the zip lining and trek tour resulted in one of the most memorable and fun days we have had as a family. After checking out this morning and arriving in Manuel Antonio, I realized I left my fully stocked toiletry bag in our room. I called them and they have already made arrangements with a shuttle service to have it delivered to me here, 4 hours away. Not having to replace all of those products is so appreciated however knowing they were willing to go this extra step was even more amazing. We highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Balcony room would have made the stay even better. Take advantage of the many quiet sitting areas throughout the hotel and grounds.

Dear Esterns,

Thank you for reviewing Monteverde Lodge & Gardens, I am glad that you enjoyed your stay, and pleased to see that our staff was able to return your toiletries to you. We are once again, as we often are, very grateful to our receptionists for taking the time to deliver excellent service. It was also great to see that they were able to provide you with a good recommendation for activities. With zip lining in particular I think it is worth talking to our staff before booking; safety is important with this activity, and we keep up the kind of frequent and strict safety evaluations that are key in a place like Monteverde where the options are always changing. We only book the safest and the best operator, so that you can enjoy the unique experience of zipping through the forest canopy with complete peace of mind.

Thanks again for the review.

Sincerely,

Natalie Ewing
