I stayed at this hotel several years ago, sharing a large, wood-panelled room w four fellow social workers. We enjoyed our stay there a lot -- easy access to the cloud forest reserve, wh was the reason for our visit. Many wonderful adventures nearby! It's true that the hill was steep, and looking down I saw a rainbow! The hot tubs were functioning and were delightful. We ate breakfast there once but it was too expensive. We found good food nearby, including plaintain soup at Sofia's. I do remember a characteristic smell in the hotel room, wh I've smelled in other wooden buildings in Costa Rica including a friend's home in Monteverde -- unfamiliar to me, but not unpleasant. Re reviewers' complaints abt putting toilet paper in the trash can -- that's how it is done in Costa Rica, as well as in Cuba and I assume in other countries as well.

Heliconia Hotel was great for setting you up with any local needs you may have needed. You could book anything you wanted in the area through this hotel and you were picked up and dropped off by that same company. The service was good but the hotel in general was not my favorite. It felt very "campy." The rooms were big but not the most warm feeling. The showers were cold, which I am usually used to, since I've been living in Nicaragua, but the temperature in Monteverde is very mild and cold showers are not a pleasant experience when it's chilly outside. There is a breakfast included every morning as well. It was good, but not quite as resort-like as other parts of Costa Rica.

The hotel is located a little ways from downtown Monteverde but it's only a $2 cab ride which made it convenient to get down to any other restaurants you may want to check out. The one very redeeming factor about this hotel was that it has a wonderful restaurant located about 75 meters away from it called El Olivo. It was absolutely amazing, so I suggest if you stay here that you check out this restaurant. You won't be disappointed.

We stayed there for 2 nights, it was our cheapest hotel in our stay in Costa Rica but the best experience. We were upgraded to a small house in wood. The small house included a huge bath tube and the best shower I have ever seen in a hotel.
The staff was great to advise us good attractions. The breakfast was included, you had an omelet station and amazing fruits.

We stayed at the Heliconia for 3 nights as part of a pre-arranged travel package on our holiday in Costa Rica. The staff were extremely helpful and they also have connections to arrange a number of really good activities and excursions. Our room was clean and reasonably sized - all acceptable and reasonable for the price paid. It's also a good location too - easy and cheap to get a taxi into the town or out to the reserves. That said, we were a little disappointed as the hotel is not quite as advertised on their website or brochures. There are 3 lovely outside jacuzzis - but none of them work. They advertise a spa and massage services etc - but this was also closed. There are no money changing facilities at the hotel as advertised. So, overall whilst this was a pleasant place to stay, the little extras that we were looking forward to didn't quite stack up in the end.

We had a booking with Heliconia and ended up staying elsewhere. Monteverde is beautiful as were the grounds at Heliconia. However, our short stay went sour quickly. It took them the longest time to check us in like they forgot we ever had a booking with them, at least we received a small complimentary cocktail afterwards. We finally received a room that was cold and warm water didnt work well. They advertise their great hot tubs but every one was out of order or only ran frigid cold water! I thought Heliconia was beautiful but my grandmother was with us and the cold water was not ok for her. When we checked out they said they would refund us partially and still never have! I'm sure they have better days but our stay was not the most pleasant...

We were a family of 4 staying in one room and it was pretty spacious. Beds were comfortable and the bathroom was clean and working. I liked that the town of Santa Elena was walking distance (about 3-4 Km) and that there were really good bakeries nearby. We took walks along the road and felt fairly safe even at night. The service is great- staff is friendly and very helpful. The walk up to the rooms is a hike but I mean, it's on a mountain so that's expected.

Breakfast was really good, they always had a variety of fruits and ability to choose eggs, toast, jams, cereals and tea/coffee. I wouldn't eat dinner at the restaurant because it is very expensive. I'd recommend instead walking into town and trying the ice cream and bakery shops.

The down side was no wifi in the rooms, and the bathroom was a little smelly albeit clean.

Room Tip: There is no AC so crack open a window!

Dear Guest:

We are very glad that you took a moment of your time to write us a review. Thank you very much.

I would like to let you know that we do have wifi on the rooms but have been having problems with the internet service provider, since we are in the mountains sometimes the service drops but we hope this is only a momentary problem.

We will look into the smelly bathroom issue because this is strange as we use a large waste water treatment plant which is far away from the rooms so no smell should be coming. Thanks for the heads up.

Also we are sorry about the AC but Monteverde has been traditionally a cold(ish) destination in Costa Rica and warm days are a novelty due to climate change. I hope this was not a great issue for you but the last few years have increasingly become hotter.

Once again thank you for your review and we hope to have you again at our hotel some day.

Mario Solano
