I only stayed here one night, so I can't speak to many of the amenities--only the rooms and sleep quality, which were good and bad, respectively.

This place has a great view, and the cliff-side setting offers a unique experience. The rocking chairs overlooking the large glass doors were a lovely place to relax in the morning, and shuttles were timely. These rooms were the cleanest we experienced during our stay in Costa Rica, and the bathrooms were the most modern--offering the comforts of home. We found the breakfast to be quite good as well.

Yet, the fridge was not cold, and we could not leave items in it since it turns off any time you leave the room with the key. The steepness of the property, paired with the fact that there are no sidewalks on the windy roads leading from building to building, leaves guests at the mercy of shuttles. We were unable to get the Wifi to work--even in the lobby or business center. Our room was so cold when we arrived, and there are no temperature controls in the room; all you can do is open or close the windows.

And the big downer--the noise! I got very little sleep the night we stayed here. Aside from finding a scorpion in our room prior to going to bed--which I'm sure made me a bit restless (though no fault of the hotel)--we heard every noise of every person within a three-room radius. Every conversation. Every flush. Every shower. Every TV. Every cough. Everything. Our friends who were on the end said it was not so bad, but where we were in the middle, it was quite frustrating.

After getting 'done over' by the Monteverde Lodge and Gardens, we had to hastily find a replacement hotel. What a great place. In a way we are glad the ML&G double booked us. Views were spectacular. The service from staff was exceptional, and the restaurant at the top of the hill served some of the best food we tasted in Costa Rica. We were so sorry to leave.

A highly rewarding venue to stay at after a tough drive across miles of gravel roads (make sure you take a 4x4, you'll need it to get to Monteverde.

Worth also mentioning is how helpful the staff were in our hour of need. Jason one of the receptionists was so attentive to us finding accommodation at the last minute, despite reception receiving enquiries left right and centre from other guests. If we return to Costa Rica, this will be our number one place to stay again.

BTW, unlike a previous review, we had no problem with coffee - we had a machine in our room. When we required a shuttle, it'd pretty much arrive in 2 minutes to collect us from our suite and take us to any location on the property.

Room Tip: The suites are wonderful. Also the higher up the room numbers, the better the views are. Make sure y...

If you decide to visit this city, 4x4 is a must! We almost did not make it to the hotel because my boyfriend thought we would be okay with a Toyota Hiace. Bad Idea!

The property is on a huge hill and the buildings are spread out. There is a shuttle that picks you up to take you wherever you want on the property. Rooms are nice and they have a beautiful view of the town.

There are two restaurants on the property. We only ate at the restaurant closest to the lobby. Breakfast was amazing! They have a large variety of food to choose from. Same applies if you decide to eat lunch or dinner there.

WiFi is a little weak in the rooms.

I looked at yahoo weather which was a complete lie. It said it was 100 degrees, but it felt like 70 degrees and it was really windy.

Great tour to enjoy from this location- Sky tram, Sky walk and Ziplines. Ziplines were the coolest thing ever! I booked through anywherecostarica.com

Just checked out at this hotel fro building 7 room 712.Few things to keep in mind: if you are a coffee drinker early morning, like my spouse is,you need to schedule a shuttle pick up due to far distance from the restaurant. No coffee pot in the room. Scattered toiletry items left in the room. A lot of rules and regulations, like for example: if you want to use the safety box, you need to deposit $35 dollars at the front desk which are return to you at checkout. This is for in case the key is lost or broken, and so on. Nearest town is nice, but you need to take a taxi where you will find nice local restaurants and stores. Nothing within walking distance if you get to stay in these far buildings.
It present some inconvenience for slow pace or handicapped people.
One thing I have to say is about the view and landscape: heavenly and breath taken scenario.

El Establo is a great reward after a punishing ride up often unpaved roads to Monteverde. The hotel clutches a slopeside near the center of Monteverde, and the hotel buildings rise past groves of hydrangeas and ponds. There is a tradeoff: The steep slope that provides magnificent views also requires a shuttle to get anywhere on the property if guests want to avoid uphill walks.

The rooms are spare in an alpine way, and many (but not all) have balconies or patios to frame the valley views. As some other reviewers have noted, a lot of hard surfaces result in some noise from the hallways and stairwells into the rooms. The mountain setting keeps the rooms cool, and cold nights can make sleeping wonderful. Good beds too.

The bathrooms were the best I saw in three hotels in Costa Rica. Separate tub and shower are elegant, but a warning from the hotel management that there is a limited amount of hot water makes frequent long baths a challenge. There was adequate hot water for the shower for a single guest though.

The pool and fitness area is very pretty, with most of it under a roof, but the valley side is open to the view with a small sundeck. The fitness area provided enough equipment for a decent workout, and the pool was a nice swim.

The main restaurant was disappointing overall. We ate there for breakfast two mornings and dinner one night. The gourmet restaurant up the hill has a happy hour from 5-7, and some nice views.

Found it noteworthy that most hotel guests were on some kind of bus tour.

Room Tip: There is a tradeoff between high views and convenience. The rooms in the 5 building (near the tenni...

The good: Beautiful setting and grounds. Large, attractive rooms with nice views. Great tour desk - we really liked the night walk and Monteverde reserve tours. Plenty of parking.

The bad: No climate control in the rooms, heat or cool. Wind howled through louvered windows all night keeping us awake. The front desk staff wasn't that friendly, and refused to help us make dinner reservations off-property.

What an unfortunate experience! We stayed here for three nights and I can honestly say this is the loudest hotel I have ever stayed in. The hotel has a cavernous like quality so every sound is magnified 10 fold. Between the hotel staff and the guests the hotel was consistently loud all hours of the day and night. If you are a light sleeper do not stay here or If you do, plan on getting no sleep. Then there is the issue of the hotel staff running the tour desk, we booked four tours with the staff and while inquiring about the various tour offerings we were spoken to in such a condensing manner by multiple staff members. The staff was blatenly rude and incompetent as two of the four tours resulted in mishaps (we were never picked up for one tour and the second tour was scheduled for the wrong time). The "fine dining" restaurant is dissapointing, it's incredibly overpriced for mediocre food. You have to shuttle to get around the property which can be a hassle.
