This hotel complex is huge and on a steep hillside, but the property is beautiful. If you are able, it is worth it to take walks and enjoy the flowers and trees, the peacock enclosure and koi pond. There is a shuttle system that can also take you around, especially the uphills.

We stayed in the 500 rooms building on the second floor. This building is near the pool and a bar and restaurant. We had room 522 which had an L-shaped deck with a great view. There is no furniture on the deck, but there are two lovely rocking chairs in the room that can be taken onto the deck if you want to sit. It can be quite breezy, so I can understand why they wouldn’t want lightweight plastic lawn chairs blowing around. You are in the cloud forests here, so the weather can change very quickly from sunny to rainy.

The room was a good size and the bathroom was modern with a separate tub and shower. There is no hvac system, but there are windows that open to create a cross-breeze, so the temperature in the room was fine.

We ate two breakfasts and one dinner at the dining room next to the road. Breakfast was basic unless you wanted to pay $2 extra each, for specialty item such as pancakes, waffles, bacon or an omelet. We had a buffet dinner that was good.

This was our second hotel stay while visiting Costa Rica. Our reservation was for the honeymoon room. The carpet, drapes and bedding were old and worn. The bedroom and bathroom were a single combined room--awful. We prefer not to sleep in the same room as the toilet. The road noise was loud and the ceiling so sloped that one-third of the room was not usable. The buffet dining was unvaried. We ended up walking into town for dinner. It is way too expensive for what you get.

Room Tip: Find another place to stay.

I stayed at this hotel as part of a tour group. The rooms were spacious and clean.. There are about 7 separate buildings of rooms. Stay up in the higher buildings. You get a wonderful view. They have shuttle buses that take you down to the reception and restaurant. They come very quickly after you call. Food at the restaurant was excellent. There is a cute town nearby to shop.

It would help to be a mountain goat as the hotel is built on a very steep hill, but they have solved the problem for those of us with stiff knees by having very efficient shuttles from the rooms to the restaurant and reception. The rooms are lovely. . .spacious and clean. . .with very comfortable beds. The lighting in the bathroom, especially in the shower, was dim. However, that was a small thing compared to how gorgeous and spacious it was.
The food in the restaurant was excellent!
Thoroughly enjoyed my stay there!

Room Tip: The top tier of rooms have excellent views!

As many have said, this hotel offers splendid views but the living quarters are spread over the face of a mountain. We were located in the 500s and this is well up the face. The rooms are spacious and nicely appointed but the problems are in the details. The ventilation seems to come from air coming through jalousie windows above the door at the far end of the room and exiting through jalousie windows in the bathroom that open out into the hall on the entry side of the room. This system provides little privacy for anyone in the bathroom. The shower requires one to adjust hot and cold water temperature at a tub-like faucet set about 18 inches above the shower floor and the hot water can get scaldingly hot very quickly while you are standing trying to adjust the temp. A detachable valve-actuated hand held shower wand would be invaluable. The climbing to reach different levels is overcome by a small fleet of minivans that ferry clients to different levels. These are fairly quick to respond to calls. Reception staff does not come on duty until 6 am so an early morning call cannot be accomplished be fore their arrival. The clock radios are inoperable because of the continual power interruption due to the electricity turning off every time you leave the room.

Room Tip: Get a room as close as possible to the reception/breakfast area as possible.

What a resort!! But, with any place, there is good, and not so good.

We stayed 2 nights here during our bus tour of Costa Rica. Our room was located in the 800's. This is the second from the top building. And by the top, i mean the top of the mountain (not quite). The road up to the room is very steep, and up hill all the way. This makes for an outstanding view from you balcony. You can see all the way to the gulf of nicoya. And you are very close to nature, as you can hear howlery monkeys from your balcony. El Establo is made up of numerous buildings, all perched on the side of the mountain. Im sure the lower rooms dont have as nice a view as the higher ones, but the 700-800-900 sould all have amazing views.

The room:
Nice big room, two queen beds. Bath rooms are very nice, and the toilets work fairly good, something we wernt used to so far on our trip. Water pressure is ok, but its not very powerful. There is a fridge in the room, a couple rocking chairs and table for the porch.
When you arrive at the room, there is a door key holder that you have to put your room key into to activate the electricity in the room. So, everytime you leave, the fridge turns off, and the clock gets reset. Kinda of a pain if you are coming and going alot. There also tends to be alot of noise from the hallway that filters into the room. Not too much from the rooms next door, however, you can hear someone taking a shower.

Since the rooms are far up on the hill, the hotel runs a shuttle service. Very easy to use, very quick and efficient and polite. Nothing bad to say here. They definiately know they have to provide this service, and they do it well. I highly suggest using it (which is free, no tip required). The walk to the top will be super exhausting!

The pool and exercise are is very impressive. The pool is heated. Its not hot, but it is good to swim in, even when it is cool. The exercise area is excellent, and is seperated by a glass wall. Great views while you work out. The equipment is great too. Usually the equipment is beaten up at most places, however, here, it was newer, and looked well maintained.

Food:
There was a nice selection laid out, with alot of care in the presentation. However, if it doesnt live up to the way it looks, it just isnt good. Overall, you shouldnt go hungry. They did have some odd menu items, like hotdogs - for breakfast. A little weird, but who am i to judge. Something that i wasnt impressed with was the extras area. For $2 an item, they would make pancakes, or omelettes. That should be part of the meal already, but it wasnt.
Our tour guide was not happy with the food. "it was no good for costa rican" was what he said. Like i said, you wont go hungry, but it definitaly isnt the best you will have.

Weather: please note this has nothing to do with hotel, just its location - heads up how to dress
We were in the 800 section. From the reception area to our room, there is a temperature decrease. We could still were shorts, but you get a chill now and then. Also, a misty rain, most of the time. Very beautiful, and you dont really get wet. This location isnt really tropical, so bring clothes appropriatly.

Room Tip: We were in the 800, 3rd floor. Highly suggest this area. Rooms were nice, and the view is awesome. N...

Nice spacious rooms with huge bathroom. Stuff was very friendly, via their Tour desk we were able to book all our tours.
Beautiful view from the terrace. Hotel offers spa and different restaurants, also shuttle which brings you up to the hill, the rooms are quite spread over the hill.
