“El Establo Mountain Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 10, 2011

We spent 2 nights in this hotel, high in the mountains of the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Our room was in one of the top buildings, far from the entrance, but the shuttle was always available and came quickly to take us up and down the mountain to the restaurant and the check in area. The buildings are beautiful and so are the grounds. It would have been a wonderful stay if it had not rained so much! November is supposed to be dry season, but it must have been late coming this year. There is a lot to do in the area, but it's all outside, and we were not interested in being out in pouring rain and getting soaked to the skin. So we spent a lot of time in our room, which was very spacious with 2 queen beds, a balcony with a great view when the clouds parted, and an elegant bath - but there were only 3 25-watt light bulbs in the entire bedroom - 1 by each bed, and 1 on the wall. This made reading very difficult, and there was no other place to go. The hotel made it clear that they did not provide extra lights. So - between the rain and the gloom, it was not a very pleasant experience, which was a shame, because it's a spectacular setting.

We stayed at one of the very top buildings of the resort, very far from the entrance and restaurant, but they provide free shuttle whenever you need it (you can attempt to climb it, but it is a very steep mountain). Great views from the top, and the room was also new and nice, and plenty of hot water (just takes a while to start). We used their computers at the lobby (they charge a few dollars for each 30 minutes), and the service there was very unfriendly ( they know some computers do not function well but they still don't say anything, just let you get frustrated over and over). The food at the restaurant was very good ( we ate from the buffet), and service was pretty good. Taxi to town is bargain at $2!

El Establo has several newer buildings, spread over a steep hillside and surrounded by beautiful grounds. Our room was in a two-story building near the top of the hill. The room was spacious, well-appointed and clean. It was air conditioned, with a sliding door that opened up onto a small patio facing the valley. The restaurant was very good, with a great breakfast buffet. You can determine your own fate insofar as the walk up the steep hill from the restaurant goes -- you can walk, or ask for a ride on the free shuttle. The name ("the stable") is far from descriptive of the property -- this is a fancy place. Activities available in the area include horseback riding, hiking tours of the Cloud Forest preserve and the Sky Walk, a series of suspension bridges in the cloud forest that put you at canopy level.

Excellent choice to spend your vacations - big fully equipped rooms, comfortable beds, spacious bathroom, balcony with a nice view of the mountains and the impressive hotel gardens. Lots of trails inside the hotel`s property that you can explore, day or night, for the ones who love orchids, there is one trail full of them. There`s also a canopy in case you want some adrenaline - if you just want to relax, there`s an indoor pool, a little gym with everything you need. he food is really good and at excellent prices, there is a good selection of wines.

You don`t have to leave the hotel to have a good time, but in case you do, there is a tour desk where you can plan your activities, and the location is perfect, you can walk to a few restaurants and the center of Monteverde is just a few minutes away (need to take the car).

The people will make you feel at home - in fact, you will not want to get back home again!!

This resort is worth the effort for the view alone. The rooms are beautiful and the baths are ultra-modern. We stayed in a room in the "800" section which is high up on the mountain and needed a shuttle to go down to the restaurant or spa--no problem--just a phone call away. The single draw back is the lack of sound proofing, so bring a sound machine. Housekeeping kept the room and bath spotless. It's hard to stay off the balcony because of the unforgettable view.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the 800 or 900 range and one on the top floor. It involves climbing a flight of s...

Our stay in El Establo and in Monteverde was just wonderful! The hotel has beautiful accommodations and has an incredible park in the back, where we enjoyed night trips guided by knowledgeable and friendly guides on rainy July nights. The owner was incredibly helpful and the nicest guy. We contacted him prior to our trip and he gave us the best advice regarding not only Monteverde, but all the Costa Rican areas worth visiting for us, always taking into consideration our interests and our family composition (a teenager and an 8-year old). The owner's family are one of the founding families of Monteverde, pioneers who have loved Costa Rica and have truly enjoyed its many beauties for several generations. It was an incredible experience!

As the hotel name states, the best stable in Monteverde.

If this hotel is the best option in Monteverde, then we do recommend travellers to extend their stay at Arenal/La Fortuna and book a one-day-tour to Monteverde from there. It takes less to get to Monteverde by boat from La Fortuna than by car, and you will stay in a proper hotel. You have also to consider the 3-4 hours drive by car in by far the worst roads in Costa Rica.

Rooms are not comfortable and not prepared for Monteverde’s weather. They do not have either air conditioning or heating. We stayed in October 2011 at this hotel and we were shocked about the fact that it was very cold inside the room!!

We had such an unpleasant stay there, that we decided to leave the hotel one day earlier. We explained the hotel personnel that we were leaving the hotel earlier because of the room conditions (not because of our own desire), but they refused to return the pre-payed amount for the last day. At the front desk, they did not seem to be worried about customer service at all…They just followed their policy (I got your money, do what you want).

The only good exception was the only opened restaurant at the hotel at that moment, where we received a good service.

We will never regret to loose the money and leave earlier this hotel.
