We stayed at Fonda Vela for 3 days during our honeymoon in late April. This was the first of three stops, with Arenal and Papagallo following.
The hotel was about half way between Santa Elena and the Reserve, which made for a pretty convenient launching point. From SE to the Reserve, it’s about 5k. While walkable, that trek is mostly uphill. Cabs are about $10US from town to the hotel. Note – only about half the road is paved. When you get closer to the hotel, it turns into a dirt road (like most of the road up to MV) and there is very little light. Make sure to bring a flashlight if you are walking around after dark…
We ate dinner at the hotel the first night. Food was better than we expected. We’d heard that the food in Costa Rica was on the bland side, but our meals exceeded expectations. We had breakfast there a couple of the days, and that was pretty good too. Both pretty reasonably priced.
We had room #6, which is a Jr Suite, overlooking the valley. Great view. Room was clean and spacious. Water was hot with plenty of pressure. Bed was ok. Staff was great, very nice, and arranged for a couple of tours (night hike and ziplines).More
