Spent 2 nights here, stayed in the main lodge. Spacious room, no in room coffee maker. Breakfast is excellent, dinner is expensive. Extra blankets and a heater are available for the room. Reception is very helpful.

This Lodge is just about on par with what you will find in Monte Verde. This isn't the place for pool bars, massages, or night life. You come to Monteverde for adventure and the outdoors. This lodge does have free wifi, which is a plus considering the area, and the included breakfast is good. The rooms are very comfortable. They don't have temperature control, again, because of the location, and they provide plenty of extra blankets in case it gets cold. The front desk is very helpful, especially when booking excursions anywhere in the area. The only real downside is it is a couple miles from the town of Monteverde, so you will need a rental car to get there.

We'd read the reviews so weren't quite sure what to expect but were pleasantly surprised. Our room (in the main block) was spacious and cool even though the lighting was rather sparse but the orange lampshades made you look really tanned! The bar and restaurant were good and the grounds well kept. What really stood out was the service - excellent. We went on a 'night' walk and would have arrived after the restaurant closed but they kept it open for us which was brilliant. One of the staff told us we could get a bus into town which took care of getting around and then we got a cab back (which was 4000 colones; the bus was 600). Yes, the hotel is built in the side in the mountain and the walkways are steep - fortunately not a problem for us but there is a pretty garden although a bit small and marred at the time by some building works going on at the top - maybe a bird-feeding station or something to attract the local wildlife would enhance the garden as the reviews are correct in that there really is very little to encourage you to linger on the grounds which is a missed opportunity as you won't be on trips and tours all the time

This is a very basic accommodation, more like a cabin then a hotel. There are no temp controls in rooms, no ac and no fan. The room smelled heavy of polyurethane it was a bit over powering. The grounds were nice.

Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. As you mentioned in you review the reason why there are not air conditioning in our hotel and in all hotels of the the areas is because we are locates 4500 feet above sea level and the weather most of the time tend to be chilly and cool.
I am very sorry that you did not like our room that we believe are spacious, comfortable and with a great view to the reserve and our gardens.

The Trapp Family Lodge is located high in the cloud forest of Monteverde, close to entrance of the Reserve. The hotel is rustic, simple and quiet, and our (upgraded) room was comfortable and had a spectacular view. The staff was hospitable and helpful, and although the restaurant/bar is unpretentious, we found the food to be quite good-- particularly the simple, local "comida tipica". This hotel does not have a lot of amenities such as swimming pools, hot tubs, zip lines, water slides, etc.-- which was OK by us.

Room Tip: Recommend getting an upgraded room; they have better views, king-sized beds, and nicer bathrooms.

When this hotel was booked for my family by Horizontes, I did my homework. I read the reviews about the steep walkway to rooms, cold/noisy bathrooms, inadequate breakfast, and distance from town. Well, I guess it depends on what you are looking for. We were there to experience the cloud forest, and this hotel is perfect for that. We travel with one carry-on each so the steep walkway was irrelevant, and we were prepared for cooler temperatures so that was not a problem either. In the upper building, you get clean, spacious rooms with lots of lodge character and a beautiful view. The breakfast was much more than a bagel, banana, yogurt and coffee that you get at many American hotels. The restaurant even brought sandwiches to our room one evening. It's quiet so you can hear birds all around and it's a 10-15 minute walk to the entrance to the preserve (which we did). If you are looking for action, shopping, or pampered luxury, then this is not the hotel for you. If you want to feel like you are experiencing nature in a very comfortable and scenic setting, then this is the place.

We just checked in about an hour ago so cannot comment on food as yet.
It is so perfect I am surprised at all the negative comments. It seems people were looking for bars, action, some noise, all the reasons I would search this setting out, peaceful and quiet.
I am sitting in my room looking at the forest with a lovely breeze blowing sun shining, the rooms are spotless, linens lovely floors all wood. The check in person was friendly, explained if we needed anything more, like blankets, etc. to ask. We will eat here tonight but they reserved a lovely table overlooking forest.
We are leaving shortly to hike, can walk right into the park, the location is perfect...no loading into car to get to park.
Will write another review when I finish my stay but know this is what I think people would want when visiting an area like this...the whole town is comprised of small lodges, almost all have uphill climbs, that is the beauty of the place. I was told there is a huge new complex with many rooms that has opened with many pools, etc and has really not fit into area at all. There was also an attempt to build a small shopping centre and much of it is unleased. As far as warm, the elevation here is high, it is a cloud forest, surprised that people expected it to be not. If people did their research they would understand what Monteverde is all about.

Room Tip: Get mountain view
