“Beautiful property, great staff.”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

We stayed here for 2 nights. The rooms are beautiful, the staff is extremely helpful. Overall, a great experience. The place is within walking distance (10-15 mins at a slow pace) to the Nature Preserve (reserve a guide if you want to get the most of your visit - the hotel can do that for you). The breakfast they include in the rate is somewhat basic, but generous and perfectly appropriate (not a buffet, they bring eggs, fruit, etc to the table). If you plan to spend a lot of time in the town of Saint Elena itself, this place is a bit far ($8 one way taxi ride, 15 mins on a VERY bumpy road). Buses are also available several times a day for about a $1. All activities we did offered transportation, so it wasn't a problem other than some added time. We would happily stay here again.

Room Tip: One building is closer to the reception, the other is a walk up the hill. If you don't like walk...

We came upon this hotel as a last resort (no pun intended). We had driven to Monteverdi all day from La Fortuna. Not realizing that we had to drive 40 klics on a dirt road to get there. Judging travel time in Costa Rica can sometimes be a challenge. Regardless, we stopped at two other hotels and were not happy with the quoted prices. Happened on the Trapp Family Lodge (thanks Frommers), went to the front desk and asked them their price and again was disappointed. My wife and I returned to the car and after a brief negotiation I returned to the front desk and said, "we will take the room". To my surprise the person said, "I will lower the price by $30.00 if you spend the night here". Pinch me, what just happened?
We unpacked in a lovely room downstairs and then to dinner upstairs. We had an awesome meal, to say the least. Great service as well. The room was perfect with a lovely porch giving us a view of the forest surrounding the property. This is also the closest hotel, I think, to the cloud forest which is why we decided to spend the night in the first place. It is not to be missed (mist?).
The roads to and from Monteverde should be driven using a vehicle with a higher clearance, we had four wheel drive. I cannot imagine what the roads would be like in the rainy season. The roads are paved within Monteverde but run out of pavement not far from town.

Room Tip: I thought the room was great. We did not get to see the rooms that are up on the hill.

The mountain suites are huge, beautifully designed, have gorgeous floors (a little slick - be careful in socks), lovely furniture, comfortable beds, and beautiful views. Be prepared to walk uphill a bit to get to them. We stayed in room 20 and couldn't be happier! Showers are warm and relaxing. Staff is friendly. The road here is bumpy but it is absolutely worth the drive. Parking is not in a secured lot but seems safe as the lot is right outside the lobby. They advertise a 15 minute walk to the Monteverde Reserve. It's all uphill so if you are from sea level like us plan for a longer trip. Picnic tables throughout the grounds are clean and great for picnics. Not a lot of choices at breakfast, but it was good and included and filled us up until lunchtime. Wifi available throughout the property is very fast for what we've seen in Costa Rica. Highly recommend this place!

We had some expectations from this place - on the pictures it looks awesome. The rooms are nice and the view from the veranda is nice - but something didn't work for us there. Maybe the smell (of color?), maybe the big spider that waited in front of the door in the morning... The location was very convenient (close to the Monteverde cloud forest and all possible activities), and the staff very helpful with booking the tours, but the family didn't like the place, in comparison to other places we stayed at in Costa Rica.

Rooms are very large, comfy beds and excellent bath, the decor is lovely. Rooms have an enclosed balcony that you can sit in that feels like you are outside.

This hotel is close to the entrance of the Monteverde Biological Preserve - less then a kilometer but its pretty far from the town (about 10 mins) but if you want to exprience the beauty of the area, its a perfect place.

Room Tip: Ask for the building above the reception - Room 19-22 -

We spent two nights here in one of their Mountain Suites, overlooking the Monteverde Reserve. The climb to the suites is very steep, but worth it for the view and the large, comfortable room with kingsize bed. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The buffet breakfast is very limited, but lots of choice for dinner, and since these were included in our itinerary, cost was not an issue. The hotel is only a 15 minute walk from the Cloud Forest which was the greatest attraction for us. There is no pool, but since our main objective was to see wildlife and enjoy the Reserve, we did not miss this amenity.

We stayed here for two nights. What is has going for it is very pleasant staff; well-prepared and delicious dinners; comfortable beds. and the fact that it is the hotel closest (15 min walk) to the Monteverde Reserve. the down sides are the limited breakfast and the steep-ish walkways to the rooms. If you have any walking issues, best to stay in the main hotel part. Unfortunately the furniture in the room and the lobby is very uncomfortable. I know that's not a big issue since everyone mostly comes to visit the beautiful reserve, but it was quite striking that none of the chairs (except in the dining room) were comfortable!
