We stayed at the Trapp Lodge as part of our honeymoon and honestly, wished we would have spent time looking into other options between Monteverde and Santa Elena. The hotel is the furthest from town, and customer service is lacking. No amenities - no pool or jacuzzi so there is very little to do at night. They don't provide a coffee maker, shampoo, soap, or Kleenex in the room. No A/C or heat in room. Shower didnt drain well. Restaurant is mediocre. Be sure to bring your hiking shoes for the uphill hike from the main lodge to your room.

Positives: walking distance to the Monteverde Reserve, great view from your room, and the bed was comfortable.

This is a good option if you don't plan to spend much time at the hotel, and your looking for an inexpensive place to crash for a night or two. Otherwise, recommend researching other options.

Room Tip: Mountain suite rooms require a long, strenuous walk so pack light

The bad: we got a room on the ground floor and though it seemed wonderful at first, we slowly realized that people wandering outside your room with flashlights at night limited privacy. There's no hot tub or swimming pool so when the sun sets there's not much to do around the grounds. It's seems as though everything was built with good intentions, but the shower door did to work right, the drains didn't work right and the sink didn't work right. The food is decent but quality is better at other places. Service in the restaurant is strange and they seem understaffed and forgetful. There is no safe in the room but we weren't worried about theft. They give you a standard key with a giant key fob that won't fit in a jeans pocket. It is immediately and painfully apparent that they are trying to save electricity/money by putting motion sensing lights in the hallways. And it was uphill a mile from town.
The good: it is only a mile walking distance from town. The staff is very friendly and helpful.
Bottom line: it's not a bad price, very pretty, friendly staff, but a poorly built building and little to do after the sun goes down.

We stayed in the new building up a long, winding and steep ramp. We got used to it, but it was a workout especially since the altitude is almost 5,000 ft. (That I observed was an issue itself for a visiting Australian lady. She had to move down to the main building.) These are newer rooms and quite nice at first glance. However, the most conspicuously missing basic became quickly apparent - no dressers or drawers to put away our clothes. We were there 3 nights and had to lay our clothes out on the extra bed. There was a closet in the sink hallway to the bathroom. You could hang a few things, but the safe took up space and there were otherwise no shelves there either for clothes storage. A refrigerator likewise would have been nice. The room chairs were more heavy rugged than comfortable, facing outward toward the beautiful area view. The shower was excellent, large with good water pressure. It was also quite windy when were there and hard to sleep with wind noise I've seldom experienced. (I would suggest bringing ear plugs just in case. Better to have them than not. Also, be aware the plus of the location is it's proximity to the Park. The minus (as reported by another reviewer) is its distance to town - most of it on a dusty, dirt road with lots of ruts. One last thing - the included breakfast was hot, but just OK. All in all, this was a mixed bag I'm not sure I could recommend.

Room Tip: If you want the newer, larger rooms, you must be willing to navigate a long, steep, uphill walkway a...

The hotel is very nice and rooms are clean. Hot water in the big showers is great after a day of hiking. Staff was helpful. Excellent views of the
mountains through the large windows. The "cabin" decor made for a cozy room. Excellent location that is very near the entrance to the cloud reserve. Great Breakfast is included and the perfect way to start the day. You will need a car to visit town.

Room Tip: Get a room with a view of the mountain!

We just spent 2 nights at the Trapp Family lodge. The lodge is the closest to the Preserve and the farthest from town ($8,00 cab ride) - but the property is lovely and clean. Our room was in the main building on the second floor and we ha a lovely view of lawns and the mountains in the distance. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the beds are good. The bathroom is fine except that you need to put your toilet paper in the waste can (something I kept forgetting to do). Also, you have to flush several times.
The breakfasts are ok but you have to pay extra if you want fruit (which I did). The dinners are excellent and the food was very tasty and they have a good wine collection.
The staff is friendly and helpful and will give you good advice on the activities.
I can get cold at Monteverde so ask for a space heater-

Room Tip: rooms on the second floor have a nice view

This warm and cozy hotel is the closest hotel to the Reserva Biologica Bosque Nuboso Monteverde. It had beautiful gardens and each room was spacious and had beautiful views. Breakfast was kinda iffy however.

TFL is located a bit of a distance from La Fortuna. We had a car, so no problem, but its too long/dangerous to walk. The road is typical of all the unsaved roads we encountered in CR; rough, potholed and corrugated. But that is unrelated to the hotel.
We had a delightful corner room over looking the lawn and over the lodge. The upper rooms offer a good view but we warned its a bit of a hike up there. TFL offers help to those unable or unwilling to take their own bags.
The room was spacious, well appointed and clean. We saw plenty of exotic birds from our room.
The restaurant and bar was OK, perhaps a bit pretentious, and priced up a bit, but then it is along way from town and La Fortuna is a long way from anywhere.
It's a short walk to Monteverde Park, perhaps 15 mins or you can get a ride.
It was cool up there in the cloud forest, but we had a heater in our room and used it.
La Fortuna is a motley place with accommodation from backpackers to what appeared to be upper scale resorts. Cannot comment or compare.
