We stayed at Trapp Family Lodge in July of 2012 and first of all let me say that the food was amazing at this Lodge! But the drive to get there was definitely just that...A DRIVE!! We went when it was the rainy season and we had a 4WD vehicle, which trust me, you're going to need to get there. The signage was fine, but when we got there it was raining, which wasn't that big of a deal...but you have to carry all of your stuff up a slippery path to the main housing lodge in the rain by yourself. When we got to our room we had an awesome view, and we tried to turn on the TV, but we had difficulty with that, so we called and asked, no movie channels. Then we called to make sure that they had the wake up time already schedules. They didn't. The room did not have a heater and we were freezing. Also, the floor is really really slippery and be careful when you walk around because you might slip, more than likely you will slip. I would stay here again but only after checking around to see other places.

We stayed in the Trapp family lodge for 2 days in July 2012.
PROS - We had the mountain suite and the views were awesome!
CONS -
Location: This lodge is right next to the cloud forest reserve, but away from town and costs $8 flat to get anywhere from here.
Old/creepy: The rooms were old and full of bugs. The biggest was a 4inch scorpion, I couldn't sleep the whole night!
Cost: Even though the initial rate was not too pricey, everything else here is $. They charge $8 for a very basic breakfast and $2.50 for a regular coffee (no coffee maker in room). Given the location there is no choice but to have breakfast here.

So please save your $$ and stay elsewhere!

The hotel was lovely, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. However, there were a few things that we found quite upsetting. Firstly, during our 3 night stay, the wifi and internet were down which inconvenienced us immensely. Secondly, the hotel handed us a list of activities and the prices. We signed up for a few tours which included pickups, only to find that once we got there, the prices were much higher and that the hotel had not updated their list in 2 years. Had we known the current prices, we wouldn't have chosen those specific activities.
Most upsetting, however, were the prices charged for breakfast (~$20 for two of us for a basic buffet- coffee, eggs, etc), lunch, and laundry. The cost of laundry was equivalent to Philadelphia dry cleaning prices! With limited choices for breakfast (it costs $8 to get into town), we felt that although we were tourists, we were being charged exorbitant prices for Costa Rica.
Again, quaint hotel but with prices comparable to NYC hotels.

We were a group of 4 couples travelling on a private nine-day tour arranged by Southern Explorations based in Seattle. When visiting the Monteverde Cloud Forest we stayed here overnight. It is a pleasant lodge with lovely wood everywhere. The staff were professional & attentive. There is a welcoming little bar to have coffee or a glass of wine. The dining room is pleasant & we had a delicious dinner and lunch the next day. Breakfast was also substantial & tasty. The rooms are spacious, clean and have all the amenities. We all did find it strenuous to walk up the steep and lengthy outdoor cement walkways to reach our rooms. It was especially uncomfortable descending the wet & now slippery walkways in the rain to go to the dining room that evening & to climb back up later. The lodge is up a steep, bumpy and dusty hill from the town of Monteverde & took long enough to reach that it was not practical to go back down later. As this is a centre for artists & craftsmen and it would have been pleasant to walk about in the evening.

We stayed in the Mountain Suite which was away from the main hotel with bigger rooms and a great view of the mountains. Very clean and great service at the front desk and restaurant. The restaurant is a little pricey, so we took taxis into town two nights.

If you don't have a car it will cost you $20 round trip everytime to leave the grounds.

We spent two nights here in a beautiful setting just down the road from the Montverde Cloud Forest--easy walk. The hotel's buildings and grounds are a great match for the setting, and the rooms are a woodwork masterpiece. The staff also were fantastic. The dinners in the dining room were the best we ate on our 10-day tour of Costa Rica--limited menu, but who care with such great sea bass, and breakfast was plenty good also! So, what's not to like? We were cautioned that the public water supply was broken, so they were reliant on their storage tanks (so limit water usage), and then the electricity went off (and with it the water) for a few hours. Hopefully, this is very rare, but just a heads-up for potential problems since the Lodge is so remotely located. We would still take the chance, given all the positives! It may not be the Garden of Eden, but you can see it from the Lodge!

Arrived around 12:00pm. The staff was friendly and helpful, checked us in early which was nice after the long ride. The view from the room was spectacular, perfectly placed to view the rain forest. If you are looking to get away and enjoy the scenery this is the place to go!!!
