“Wind and Wood”
Reviewed January 3, 2008

Want to be surrounded by polished wood and listen to the wind howl over your head while you're snuggled down in a giant bed? Then Trapp Family Lodge may fit the bill. The rooms are huge, very clean, and boast wooden floors, walls and ceilings. Beware, though: if you don't have a car, Trapp Family Lodge is pretty remote. Prepare for a long hike into town and bring an umbrella, because chances are you'll get caught in a downpour! There are really no restaurants within walking distance, so you're stuck with the hotel restaurant, which wan't bad, but wasn't great. Bring a car and you'll be in good shape (once you navigate the crater-like roads!).

The setting of this hotel is fantastic. The room has an enclosed balcony area looking onto the reserve. We were in the cheaper rooms, which don't have TV, but no need - at the end of the day we were so tired. We walked to the reserve from the Lodge - we definitely recommend taking a guided walk first. Then we walked on our own to the Continental Divide. Our guide books warned we would not see many animals - but that was not the case. Quetzals, toucans, howler moneys, hummingbirds, peccaries, all kinds of reptiles, insects and birds. We also recommend the night tour. It was cool (we arrived at the end of the rainy season), and the room was slightly cool but not uncomfortable. Desafio travel picked us up in San Jose, arranged a hanging bridge tour for us in Monteverde and then later took us to La Fortuna. The roads were bumpy but the scenery up and down the mountain is fantastic. We also visited the bat museum which is staffed by biologists and emphasizes education. The hotel was comfortable and very clean -- we will stay there again on our next visit - the proximity to the reserve was very convenient. The service in the restaurant was fantastic. They did not have Internet access in the rooms, but let us check our e-mail at the front desk. A staff person at the Friends of Moneteverde Park (Dulce Wilson) told us that of the 200,000 annual visitors to Monteverde, only 75,000 visit the reserve. They don't know what they are missing - but better for us!

We stayed at the Trapp Family Lodge Dec 23-24 2007. The lodge is at one end of the the town and given that all the roads to MonteVerde are EXTREMELY BAD, add an extra 15 - 20 minutes every time you plan on getting in or out of this hotel. We stayed at the mountain rooms which were quite spacious -- but there was no heater in the room. The food at the restaurant was quite good. No complaints about the hotel other than its location -- however we felt that Monte Verde itself can be avoided in lieu of other places in Costa Rica. Number one is that the roads to Monte Verde are extremely bad -- if you are driving yourself be prepared for a flat tire or two -- our friends who were accompanying us ended up spending 4 hours at the gas station to get 2 tires fixed. Also, in winter MonteVerde gets very cold and it was raining all the time we were there. There are a few interesting activities in Monte Verde such as the zip line tours. However you can do the same zip line in other places such as Arenal. If you absolutely want to visit Monte Verde, I would recommend doing a day trip from Arenal to Monte Verde (via boat) -- which most of the hotels in Arenal should be able to organize.

The Trapp Family Lodge was really nice. The grounds are beautiful and you have a beautiful view of the cloud forest. The lodge is located close to the reserve so you have to take a 10 min taxi ride to town to eat or do most activities. Monteverde was a great city. There are a lot of good restaurants (Pizzaria de Johnny, El Sapo Dorado). We stayed in a mountain view sutie. It was newer than the other rooms. The beds were comfortable. There were lots of blankets becuase the room does not have heat (or air conditioning) and at night the temperature drops dramatically. It is also very windy in Monteverde so if you are planning on just packing shorts and t-shirts, think again! The rooms are open air (you can close the windows but then you don't have any air) so bring mosquito repelant! I would stay here again if I go back to Monteverde, but if you would rather be close to the hustle and bustle this is not your place.

When you're headed to the Monteverde Cloud Forest, be warned that the roads to this area are really bad. The guide books that describe this drive are not exaggerating! We had a rental car and found the bumpy road to be amusing for a while. But it's a long, winding drive on a narrow road with potholes almost the size of your car. Other tourists said the drive was much longer by tour bus.

The lodge is in a few minutes' walking distance of the Cloud Forest - the closest one available. But I recommend having a car to get back into town - it's otherwise a long walk. The rooms are very spacious but the place is a little chilly and damp.

We paid for a tour for the forest. The times of the tours had changed so the one we were planning to go on was cancelled, but the staff was really nice and one of them volunteered to give us a tour on the spot. Having a private guide was really helpful! We also did a night tour when it was slightly drizzling. We definitely learned alot, but don't expect to see too many mammals on the night tour - mostly frogs (wonderfully colored) and insects.

We did a SkyTrek zip line tour here. There are a lot of zip line companies, so be sure to pick a good one. We were told the mechanisms used by some of the other companies are not as safe. The SkyTrek tour claimed to have the longest, highest, and fastest zip lines. It was a lot of fun, and the variety probably added to our excitement. If you're scared of heights, be prepared for the "highest" zip line - you climb what seems to be a radio tower that takes you over the top of the canopy. The climb up the tower is the worst part, but it's worth the view!

After reading the reviews I was a little hesitant about staying here. However, we had a great time. We shared a mountain suite room, which was spacious and tastefully decorated.
The lodge itself blends nicely with the surrounding cloud forest.
Everyone at the lodge was extremely nice, including Mr. Trapp himself.
It's a little ride into town, so make sure you have a car. We never dined here however we did have dinner at the Fonda Vela which was out of this world!

My wife and I got married in Costa Rica in late April and spent two weeks touring much of the country. Of all the places we stayed, the Trapp Family Lodge was definately one of the best. We stayed at the Monteverde location for two nights and the San Jose location the night before we left the country for home.

In Monteverde, the staff was very friendly. We were greeted by Freddie whe immediately arranged for help to carrry our luggage to our room. We stayed one of the Mountain Suites. The room was beautiful and the grounds were very well kept. We ended up eating dinner in the reseaurant both nights of our stay. Freddie ended up being our waiter and bartender also. Since this was our honeymoon, Freddie decorated a table for us for dinner one night. It is touches like these which made this particular stay wonderful.

The night prior to leaving, we stayed at the Trapp Family Lodge in San Jose. We were not sure what we were in for given the location in the city. As we turned down the private drive, the gates opened into this beautiful hotel surrounded by an immaculate garden setting. We met Karin and her husband (the owners of both resorts) and she greeted us after a long day of traveling and made us feel right at home. After being out of the states for so long, we were in the mood for pizza and Karin helped us order from a local restaurant to have one delivered. The next morning, we wanted to get a little sight seeing done before we left and Katin helped with that as well. She organized a taxi to take us to the nearby volcano. She even came in early to fix us breakfast before we left in the morning. I have never felt so welcome anywhere that I have stayed as I did at there. I would highly recommend contacting Karin to arrange a stay. It is only a five minute drive to the airport, so if you are just arriving or need a nice place to stay before you leave, stay there, you will not be sorry.
