“great view and location”

This is a pleasant and seemingly new hotel. As others have reported although there is no AC it is pleasantly cool with the sliding glass doors open. Because I had read a review here, I asked for a second floor unit which was a good thing as I would have felt uncomfortable leaving the door open while we slept. Breakfast was nice because of the lovely view, but the coffee was too strong and the menu was the same each day. It is a quiet place so nothing to do in the evening. ...no pool.

Room Tip: Ask for a second floor unit. If you walk to their other hotel the Ficus Val Verde nearby along a lov...

This hotel is beautiful! THe breakfast is great, but it is sit down, and not buffet so give yourself some time. We cut it close our fist day thinking we would just grap and go. Not so. Very fancy atmosphere and great people. The rooms are very nice also, not complaints at all. This hotel is of course on top of a hill like everthing in this country. Be prepared to walk. You can walk to Curri Cancha reserve if you want to, or take a taxi. Taxis here are really cheap unlike the rest of the country. It was 3 dollars to go from our hotel to the other side of town [small town] for dinner. We were just wore out and opted for a taxi that day. As for the town, do not eat there! There is a place just on the way out called Sabor Tico. Great food and we ate there every night for 3 nights. Good prices also. Got something new every night. The banana shakes are the best. The town seems safe and we were out at night with no issues. It was always dark after dinner and we always walked back to the hotel. A pretty far walk by the way, but nice. THere is also a nice grocery in town we stopped in acouple of times. THere is a tourist information booth in town near the grocery. Very helpful and they told us about Sabor Tiko. A lot of people stayed at Poco A Poco also. Not sure how it was, but looked nice. There are a lot of hotels here in the boondocks. Be careful about where you stay, you will be trapped there. I would stay here again. Again, be prepared to hike up a hill to get to your room.

Room Tip: All rooms are great. We were in 234. Great views.

The rooms were spacious, and the view of the sunset was terrific from the balcony. There's no air conditioning, but the room was very comfortable with the sliding glass doors open. We left them open while we slept, because we didn't think anyone could get access to the balcony or room.
We were in an upper building on the steep hillside, and it was a struggle getting the van up there to unload and load our luggage. During our stay we parked at a lower level and walked the rest of the way up to our room. You have to watch your footing a bit to prevent slipping on some of the loose stones. I recommend booking a room in one of the lower buildings.
As another writer mentioned, there is no refrigerator. Nor do they supply shampoo. I had to ask for a hair dryer, and they did give me one. I had a bit of trouble getting a steady water temperature in the shower, too. Overall, we were satisfied with our accomodations.

Room Tip: Try to book a room on the lower hillside.

The Ficus is a nice hotel in a good location. The view from your balcony is amazing--the very small downtown area with the Gulf of Nicoya on the horizon--especially as the sun is going down. The rooms are big and clean, and that includes the shower--it's the biggest shower I've ever been in, I felt like an aristocrat.

It's a nice, easy walk down to the town for food or shopping. However, it's not a nice, easy walk back--it's quite a climb. A cab ride is only about $2, and it's worth it, especially when you consider you'll probably have a good uphill hike to your room once you're dropped off--the hotel is built on a steep hillside.

Now for the negatives. As a few other reviewers have said, I half-expected a mini fridge and/or microwave, considering many of the more expensive hotels these days have one or both. What made this really bad was that when I asked for ice, they said they didn't have an ice machine and the restaurant wasn't open yet. I thought it was a bit strange for a nice hotel not to have a single cube of ice available. When you return from a day of hiking, a lukewarm Diet Coke that's been sitting on the nightstand for eight hours isn't what you really want.

There's no AC in the room, but for me that wasn't really an issue--at that elevation, it's not really as blazing hot as you think, at least not when I was there. Heck, most of my time in the area I wore a light sweater over my t-shirt. The Wifi was also spotty--it was out one of the three days I was there.

Staff was friendly and helpful, and booked a great horseback riding tour for me. The staff makes this a three-star review instead of two. Overall, if I was too visit the area again I might choose one of the smaller hotels in the town, or pony up and get one of the more expensive places; but, that being said, you could do much worse.

I want to be clear that the rooms themselves were fine, the staff was amazing, and it was probably more our fault for not paying attention but to be clear this hotel is located right in the middle of the city a few hundred feet from a major street. The views are mainly of the surrounding city and you have quite a lot of road noise from the passing cars going up and down a busy street.

There is also no AC that I found, so to keep your rooms a bit moderated in temperature you're going to have to open the windows which leads to more road noise.. again it's not awful but if you're expecting ot be isolated and away from everyone that is not the case!

The ficus is located within walking distance of town. Very clean and modernly appointed. The service for breakfast and happy hour is wonderful excellently delivered by Matt and Kathy. Very noisy at night as the wind really blows and the blinds make a alot of racket. DO NOT STAY on ground floor, no privacy, no security and the only way to get air is by leaving your windows, sliders open and also open to anyone to walk in.

The hotel seems to lack management and some of the little things expected at a nice vacation spot such as hair dryers, mini fridges, ice, computer area and bellman service. Could eventually be a top hotel.

Room Tip: Do not stay on the ground floor.

Pretty nice hotel in the sleepy town of Monteverde, Seemed like one of the nicer hotels in the town. The hotel wasn't full so the restaurant/bar was only open for breakfast. Getting the luggage to your rooms was a little bit of a pain but not too bad.
