Our advice is to do this with a guide. We had Rafael who was superb. He was able to spot things we would never have seen ourselves and helped us get excellent pictures. We saw three quetzals, tree adder, humming birds and many other birds. His English is excellent and he taught us so much about the cloud forest and how it all works. His enthusiasm and love of his subject is infectious.

Forget monteverde and all the other parcs. Curicancha Will blow your mind. There is the most beautifull field near the entrance with a few avocado trees. I sat here for an hour enjoying all the quetzals (i saw 8). So easy to spot even without a guide.

In Santa Elena, Monteverde, Costa Rica is a hidden jewel of nature. Birds, animals, and plants abound in a reserve that limits visitors to 40 a day. Well marked trails. We saw Ornate hawk-eagles, Quetzals, parrots, Keel-billed Toucans and humming birds in old, second growth forest and pastures. Super visit for nature lovers.

Today we had the most fascinating tour I have ever had. We had a private guide who was brilliant, spoke perfect English and gave us an incredible experience of understanding the eco system of the cloud forrest. He was so knowledgeable. We saw the resplendent Quetzal (both males and females), various species of hummingbirds, toucans, a green pit viper, deer, and lots of other birds and animals that I don't know the names of. It was like taking biology 101 in school, but far more interesting with the classroom being the incredible Curi-Cancha Wildlife reserve and the best teacher ever. Mauricio, the manager of the reserve recommended Cristian Chaves Chaves and said that he was one of the best guides and we were lucky he was available. I recommend you contact him at crvipers@hotmail.com. His cell phone is 8975-2015. You will have a fantastic time!!

The morning bird-watching nature walk starts at 7:30am. The park lets in 45 people and that's it for the morning. Unlike other parks, you never feel over-crowded therefore wildlife can walk/fly around freely.
In the middle of a clearing in the park, there's a majestic avocado tree where the coveted quetzals eat and slowly digest (it takes 30 minutes) these fruits. Hence, he will pose there for you to take pictures if you are lucky of course. We were lucky enough to see a female who is modestly dressed and a male in his colorful panache and a long tail to be envious of in all of the animal kingdom! We talked to a Tico who has been living in Monteverde since birth and only saw the quetzal twice in his whole life!
And also, we saw an array of different animals such as the tucanet, hummingbirds, sloth, coati, etc & the diversity of the cloud forest's fauna.
However, the BEST thing about our tour was our guide MELVIN. He is incredibly knowledgeable (my husband & I annoyingly asked him questions about everything to which he could answer every one of them) and incredibly passionate about nature which is so infectious!
I very strongly recommend him!
