We booked all our travel through Anywhere Costa Rica . . . which has its advantages and disadvantages . . . but Cala Lodge turned out to be an overall good place to stay. When we checked in, the young lady at the front wasn't overly friendly (friendliness in CR is so common and wonderful!) . . .
Our room was spacious and basic and in the main building. There are several separate buildings, but we didn't get to see them. The breakfast each morning is really nice -- your choice of any type of eggs, fresh and beautiful fruit, good coffee (yes, good!) and kind and sweet staff.
Cala lodge was within walking distance of Monteverde itself and larger adjoining town, St. Elena. We liked the hike to town and up the steep hill to return -- EXERCISE!It's good for us, remember?
Each room has a balcony and the common room where breakfast is served is open and friendly and people from around the world share breakfast together.
This was the ONLY place we have stayed so far that has adequate and ultra-clean white towels with washcloths or face cloths -- which seem to be an unknown concept int CR for some reason.
Overall, we liked it and liked the room, the views, the beauty and drama of lightening and thunder in the distance, the walkability, friendliness of staff and town.
Not fancy. Basic and decent.

As a Costa Rica travel designer, Cala Lodge is the perfect place for those who are looking for a relaxing, quiet and cozy place to stay. The lodge is not far from the main attractions and is located in a peaceful área, not in the main noisy Street that heads to Monteverde Reserve.

Great views everywhere, a heartful breakfast to start your day activities and most important the personalized service they offer!!

Do not hesitate to stay here! Remember is a lodge not a 5 star hotel. No TV, no telephone in your room but birds singing every morning waking you up =)

This is a cozy hotel located at the edge of the cloud forest. It is within walking distance to Santa Elena, though it is a bit of a hike. Good breakfast and excellent coffee!! While there is no restaurant on site there are a couple of excellent establishments within a short distance. Also a short walk to El Jardin de las Mariposas (butterfly garden). The views from the room are incredible. The clouds coming over the mountain were very neat to see. Try Don Luis for lunch or dinner. The food was good, prices were reasonable and a good bar selection. Hotel staff is very friendly and helpful . They assisted us in setting up a couple of local tours and everything was very smooth. I would definitely consider Cala Lodge for my next visit to the Monteverde area.

The room was equipped with everything needed to be comforting, the bathrooms are spacious with plenty of comfort.
The location of the hotel contributes to a peaceful environment.
The service at the front desk and maintenance staff is very attentive and helpful.
A detail to improve, is the lighting between the spaces that connect the reception with the rooms.
Finally, if you can do, take a time to appreciate the trees surrounding the rooms and take the power of nature to resist, it will be amazing, do you really will enjoy it

I wish I could give more than 5 stars. We went in the down season and they upgraded our room without us asking. It was breathtakingly beautiful! The interior was spacious and the wood and large windows made for a great ambience. The hotel is on the edge of the Children's Eternal Forest Reserve and the views (right outside!) are great, especially from the private balcony with lots of seating, and there is lots of wildlife on the property. We saw agouti, lots of birds (Francisco, one of the owners, knows a ton and is good at sharing with guests), hummingbirds (they are bigger and more colorful than the ones in the US), fireflies, and lizards. Every member of the staff was truly exceptional. We did not want to leave! Half of me wants to keep this special place a secret. This is the top place to re-visit in Costa Rica if we get the chance.

They are within walking distance of several restaurants, a butterfly garden, have a walking trail on the property, a wonderful cooked-to-order breakfast, and tour companies pick up guests from the lobby daily. Our room had a full sized fridge and kitchenette with all the basics. And a huge, wonderful bathtub.

Room Tip: Call and talk to the front desk, tell them what you're looking for, super friendly and helpful
