A fantastic location with a a very helpful staff. The rooms are simple and clean, with everything you need. The owners of the hotel are alway there to help you make your stay as comfortable as possible. Between the staff and the owners they have a wealth of knollege of the surrounding reserve and cloud forrest. If you come to Monteverde to escape the trails and tribulations of every day life then this is the place to stay.

We stayed here for 2 nights on our trip through Costa Rica and enjoyed everything about the lodge. When I booked the room I mentioned it was our honeymoon in the notes. They made sure to notice and we were treated very well our entire time there. The breakfast was great, just enough food to get you going for an active day without weighing you down. The location is quiet, convenient, and affordable. Lots of wildlife to see right on property and a character of a cat to keep you entertained in the absence of a television. I travel almost weekly for work, and I wish all my hotel stays were as enjoyable as Cala Lodge.

We went here after reading the good reviews but were very disappointed. We were given a room in the back with absolutely no view although we had requested a room on the 1st floor. The reason we were given was that there were strong winds the night before and they had moved everyone over to this side of the hotel , however ,I do have my doubts that they pulled a fast one on us becasue we were only staying a night. The room was small and suffocating. The breakfast next day was basic and limited to 2 pieces of toast and 3 pieces of fruit and took forever to be served. Overall, a bad experience.

It is actually very disappointing for us to read a review based on a subjective, partial and false argument. To begin with there are no rooms on the back; both of our buildings are facing forest and obviously not every room has the same view; the customer explained he requested a room on a first floor and he got it.
We are located on the continental divide on top of the mountain range that is the reason why this is a cloud forest and therefore so special; winds are to be expected. If we gave the customer a room on the less windy side of the building it was to try to please him; however it is curious that after checking our files; the customer never explained that he may prefer to be on another location. We are fully aware of the customer service we have to provide and have worked out in many other occasions the way to please our customers if there are special requests or needs; but in order to do that we will need to know it in the first place. I can guarantee you in Cala Lodge there are no suffocating rooms and maybe after checking our website, room gallery, room layout and rates if they wanted a big large spacious room they could have booked a Suite and not a standard room; of course that will mean pay a little bit more.
Our breakfast is probably one of the things we are proud of the most: fruits, coffee, tea, eggs of your preference, ham, cheese, butter, toast, tomatoes, jam, fresh pancakes, homemad granola and orange juice. It seems to us as travelers ourselves it is beyond a regular continental breakfast and we found the critic made by the customer unfair and out of place. We honestly think our other critics on this site can explain better what is Cala Lodge about.

We stayed at Cala Lodge for two nights & found the rooms to be clean but very basic. We only spoke to the receptionist who gave us a map showing us all the places of interest. They have a nice seating area in reception where you can relax and admire the view.

Room Tip: We had room 7 which has a double & single bed but not much of a view.

We stayed only one night in Cala Lodge in Monteverde, but it was quite pleasant. Raquel, the co-proprieter, was very helpful and informative in the cpouple of weeks leading up to our trip. When our flight was delayed by 24 hours coming into Costa Rica, she was unable to move our reservation, because she was already booked, but she kindly helped to arrange for another hotel for us for one of our two nights. Cala Lodge is set in a quieter corner of the town of Monteverde, not far from the main road into the Monteverde Biological Preserve. But both Monteverde town and Santa Elena are very touristy, and to experience the biological wonders, you have to get out of your lodge and its surroundings. This isn't the kind of place to relax and enjoy the view from your room, or the lodge's porch, but you shouldn't be doing that in this part of the world, anyway. The included breakfast was excellent, with cooked to order items, and very good and hearty bread. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was very comfortable and pleasant. There was no television or phone in the room, which was nice.

The owners/employees are so friendly & helpful! The rooms are plain, but very new & super clean. Vaulted ceilings give the rooms (on the upper levels) a nice, airy & open feel. Lots of windows to brighten up rooms & bathrooms. Balconies & patios are so pleasant to sit out on when relaxing at this hotel. Wi-fi only works in the main building. The breakfast was delicious! We had a mixup with our booking, & the owners were very forgiving & accommodating - not sure this would've happened with one of the larger hotel chains.

Room Tip: Second-level rooms have vaulted ceilings & balconies. Obviously, the rooms facing the valley gi...

Don't get me wrong. I liked Cala Lodge very much. I found the rooms to be like a visit to my parents 1970s rec room...and the WiFi was a little hit-and-miss. The main reception area was warm and inviting (as were the other guests). Cala Lodge does make for an excellent base of operations for exploring the area - and the deLucia Restaurant is within walking distance.

Room Tip: The rooms are housed in 2 buildings - the nearer of the two to reception gets WiFi fairly consistent...
