“Serenity Indeed!”
Reviewed April 25, 2012

After a very eventful and exciting drive from Arenal to Monteverde, we arrived at our home for the next two days and couldn't have been happier. We checked in with one of the owners, who was gracious and helpful. She outlined where we were on a map and made many food recommendations as well as tours. We ate at almost every one of her picks (3 out of 4) and they were all delicious and affordable!
The place is BEAUTIFUL. Our room was on the second floor of the front building (they have suites down another path) and had a great little deck to sit and watch all the amazing nature around us. The room is simple and quaint. The bathroom was just right.

Breakfast each morning is cooked to order consisting of eggs, meat, rice and beans, fruit, toast, juice and coffee. Both days were delicious and served by Rosie and Vicky.

A few pointers for people that are "sensitive" to noise or the woods or not used to anything but the Ritz (and why would you always want that?!!):
1. This place is a lodge. In the woods. There will be bugs. And critters.
2. Most people staying here are going on the great tours this area provides and they leave early. Breakfast starts at 6:30am, so yes, you will hear people out and about early. If you want to sleep in, wear earplugs and know that by 8am the place is basically empty.
3. Again, this is a lodge. Don't expect room service or someone to be at the front desk at all hours. They clearly state their available hours and if they aren't there at that exact moment, calm down and wait. It will all be ok.

This was a great experience and I highly recommend this to avid travelers that want comfort and quality at extremely reasonable prices.

My family and I stayed at Cala Lodge for 3 nights. The room was lovely with a nice deck where we could almost touch the trees. We did a couple of excursions, including a bird watching tour at a new private reserve that owner Francisco set up for us with a friend. The funny thing is, we could have stayed on our deck and seen all of the birds we saw on the tour, except for the Keel billed Toucan. In one afternoon, we saw Tityras, toucanettes, mot-mots, hummingbirds, blue-gray tanagers, a white cheeked ground sparrow, plus so many more. We walked into Santa Elena a few times and back from Monteverde once. Both walks were completely doable...even with a 9-year old. There's a lovely ice-cream shop right by where you turn in towards the hotel to act as an enticement. On the walk back from Monteverde, you go right past an info booth for the Children's Eternal Rainforest, which is worth a quick stop. And the trail that's on the property is very worthwhile. I didn't do it until our last day, but I saw Agoutis and lots of birds.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 7 which was on the second floor, close to trees, so not much view...except when th...

We stayed three nights at Cala Lodge. The staff are very helpful in arranging daily activities with great guides. Every day starts with a great breakfast prepared and served by their friendly staff. While we were busy with guided activities, we were also able to relax amid the lovely setting. Thank you so much.

Lovely and calm hotel, which is close to nature. Nice rooms and good breakfast, very friendly hosts. One of the best places we have stayed in in Costa Rica, defintely would visit again! We particularly liked, that the hotel is quite small and that you have a fantastic view to the Monteverde mountains.

We stayed here for only one night in March, 2012. The place we stayed in was very large--3 beds, nice sized bathroom, and a small living area with kitchen. The Hotel itself is surrounded by lush trees and a trail that you can hike (we did not hike it). Just a few minutes drive from the hotel is the main area in Monteverde were you can find all the shops, restaurants, and coffee shops (delicious!!). The only bad thing about the area is the drive since most of the roads to get into Monteverde are very very rocky and unpaved, however, many roads in Costa Rica are like that.

I recently visited Monte Verde in one of my regular business trips and had the chance to stay at Cala Lodge, the experience of being right in the forest is amazing, the mornings with the sound of docens of birds around me is fantastic,.
I want to thank Francisco and his friendly staff for a great stay, I can't wait to be back.

We have nothing but good to say about this hotel. It’s not grand or imposing. It’s small, extremely friendly, just enough outside of town to make you feel like you are deep in the wilderness, yet you can still walk to stores, restaurants, and downtown. It’s owned and run by a couple who are extremely helpful and speak excellent English. It only has about a dozen rooms scattered across a couple of small buildings hidden out of site of each other by the trees. Our room was simple, but wonderfully large and spacious. The view from the balcony of our 2nd story room overlooked unbroken cloud forest. Small animals like white nose coatis and agoutis strolled across the grounds and through the small yard beneath our balcony. We cooked our own dinners in the kitchen of the room, and ate on our balcony. It was the kind of beautiful place in a beautiful location that you wish you could live in year-round. It was an incredibly relaxing place to stay. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Room Tip: Room No.15
