Our two nights at the Tree Top House were great, the location just out of the chaotic town centre was perfect. There are several nice restaurants within a 10 minute walk. Our host Guy and Sabine were welcoming and Guy was instrumental in helping us plan our days.
We enjoyed the horseback sunset tour (Smiling Horses) very much (skip the waterfall nice but not amazing). I would recommend Guy hand out maps to the ranch as we got lost. We also had a good tour of the Reserve Biologica with our guide Melvin. Guy also arranged for us to do the Selvatura Hanging Bridges tour, they picked us up at the Tree Top House as we would never have found the place. Note the roads in and around Monte Verde are poor SUV's are a must. The hanging bridges tour was just a walk in the jungle...no guides so it was rather dull and not worth the $$. One suggestion - is that on arrival we were to call Sabine so they would meet us in the town centre. However, every pay phone we tried was broken. We asked at the tourist info centre why the phones wouldn't take coin..they said you needed a calling card. Which was for sale across the street....the info centre then sent us to a place that didn't sell the cards...more wandering around..... we finally found a pharmacy that sold the cards. $10 US. Which we then found out was for international calls not local. We ended up asking a taxi driver if we could use his phone, he was most obliging. All to say some advanced warning of the phone issue would be made for a less stressful start, to our Monte Verde tour..not what we needed after 3 hours of hellish roads. Having said that I I would highly recommend Tree Top to you all. thx to Guy and Sabine.

Room Tip: We were in bottom room, which didn't offer a balcony but it was just fine. It is quite windy up...

Literally in a tree. This place is amazing. The pictures don't do it justice. Guy and Sabine are wonderful hosts and take their advice on where to go and what to see. They booked us the best trips, and told us the best way to see them. Their guide recommendation for the cloud rainforest was amazing he was so much fun and so much better than the guide I had had in the past. We loved this home and cherished every minute we spent there. We played card games all night while listening to animals outside. The sunset is phenomenal from the kitchen. The beds are comfortable, the hot water plentiful and all you need is a group of good friends and everything else is complete. Can not wait to go back.

Room Tip: Bring Games.

I do think the value is excellent. You are given a clean place with an over abundance of beds. Sabine and Guy are very nice owners/mangers and provided a great number of pamphlets to enhance our stay. They even gave us some of the coffee they cultivated. The views are very nice and you feel secluded, being the last house on the road. The bathrooms are nice and are in good working order. The decor is awesome.

Nevertheless, there are more campy aspects to the place. The beds were OK and a little short (I am 6 foot and I think that was the length of the beds). The showers are tricky - you need to adjust the water pressure to get hot water. Even knowing how to adjust the temperature through water pressure, the showers are still very inconsistent (hot one second and cold the next). You also hear everyone else in the house walking around. However, I was still pleased with the accommodations given the price we paid.

What drove me nuts was that my whole group couldn't sleep. The winds were out of control. Monteverde itself is a windy place as it is located at the top of a mountain. However, the house happens to be located in one the windiest sections of the mountain. The house literally shook at times. Although, our guide through the cloud forest mentioned that it was a particularly windy week, I would be aware that you may not sleep very well.

Room Tip: The further down in the house you go, the better the winds will be.

We had a great stay in a great place. The spot is perfect, quiet and tranquil. We stayed with another couple and shared the top apartment. The house was spacious and we had plenty of room not to get in each others way. Sabine was a great host and runs a nice operation. The house is set back far enough off the road to feel private but, close enough to feel like your still close to town. I would recommend this for anyone looking for more privacy then a hotel, good value for the money.

I like quirky places and this is one of them. It is an artist's studio home turned into a hotel/B&B (without the breakfast). Secluded location yet close to everything from the cute town to nature/cloud forest.

The hostess was great and very accomodating. We stayed in the jungle floor room complete with 2 beds and a kitchenette. We didn't use the small portable counter-top stove but we appreciated having a working mini-fridge.

Because there were no guests upstairs we had a very quiet stay. But I am told that footsteps can be heard easily if there were others around. We had access to the upstairs porch which was very unique with comfortable and quirky furniture. It was too windy for us to take advantage of this and no monkeys running around (too windy I bet).

The bathroom had a water-fall like spout and handheld shower head. Warm water was not always consistent. The waterfall showerhead, while really neat, splashed the toilet and toilet paper, making showers a bit messy.

No A/C or heat but it's okay due to the temperate weather. The bed would be too short fo 6 footers+. Although it's a thin mattress on a ledge, it was suprisingly comfortable. Just wish the sheets were a little softer and the comforter had a stain on it.

Overall I enjoyed it. I would recommend it to others who like B&B's and don't want the generic hotel feel. I peered into the upper level room and it looked very cool! If I returned, I would request the higher level rooms just to see what it was like.

Room Tip: HIgher level rooms for better view and access to the large porch.

Tree Top House is very affordable so we weren't expecting great things and were actually pleasantly surpirised.
Sabine, the owner, met us at the house. She supplies quite a useful information book with places/telephone numbers etc. She does not live on the same property but we had her telephone number for emergencies.
As mentioned by previous reviewers, the house is quirky. It's basically a log cabin from the outside. Inside it is split (we had the top floor studio and were the only guests in the whole house at the time) there is enough space for two couples in the studio- if you know one another well! We were travelling with our daughter and her husband. They took the small bedroom with the curtain across the door opening and we slept in the more open bedroom area which also has a TV in it.
For sitting together there is a wooden table and 'high' bar-style chairs.
The kitchen is basic but workable though not as clean as we would have liked - judging by other reviewers maybe we were just unlucky and it had been rushed for some reason.
The location is very good. We had been to Monteverde before so knew that we would be in a good spot. The house is within easy walking distance of :-
Tramonti restaurant - great place.
Cabure is good for sitting with a cool drink and if you are interested in bats - the bat jungle is there also.
Small shops for basic supplies.
Also in walking distance to the Childrens Eternal Rainforest.
Either driving or by taxi you can get up the mountain (to the cloud forest) or down to (Cerro Plano and Santa Elena) with ease.
On balance this was good experience at the price.

Room Tip: The top floor is fine but probably not for small children

My boyfriend just got back from our trip a couple of days ago. We did so much research on hotels in Monteverde and were lucky enough to come across this beauty. We were looking for something lush and amongst the trees, and boy did we get it. We stayed in the Tree Top Studio. It had the scent of beautiful wood when we walked in. Sabine was wonderful. She answered my endless email questions with utmost attention and patience before we arrived, and when we got there, she took the time to go through all the details.

We had our own kitchenette, complete with fridge, toaster oven, small fridge, all the pots and pans you could need, which was awesome. We took advantage of all of this by purchasing all our food just a block up the street at the local co-op supermarket. It was very affordable. The location of the Tree Top House was great, 'cause it was sort of off the beaten path but also easily accessible to town by cab and SUPER close to a couple of great restaurants, including Tramonti, the Italian restaurant with a beautiful view of the rainforest and Stella's bakery.

We were lucky enough to experience an awesome lightning storm from the Tree Top Studio and take some great photos! It was just so cozy, and with the extra blankets, staying warm and comfortable at night was not a problem.

Please be aware that you're staying very close to vegetation, hence the random appearance of insets (big and small) inside the room is not uncommon! We actually loved the little surprises! Nothing serious... moths, grasshoppers, a couple of small spiders... We are animal lovers and gently escorted them back outside. So not for the squeamish... In fact, Costa Rica shouldn't be for the squeamish! Even the more modern hotels receive frequent insect guests. Costa Rica is home to over 300,000 species of insects, so expect it!

All in all, we would stay at the Tree Top House again! FIVE BIG STARS!
