The Residence II Borgo Calano deserves all the praise it has received. The owners are a delight- nothing is too much trouble. The gardens are wonderful and the surrounding countryside perfect for long walks. If you want to feel you are living like an Italian while in Italy this is the place for you!

You may be a well-seasoned traveller who has visited Florence and Tuscany many times but perhaps you have never ventured into Casentino, between Florence and Arezzo. If this is the case, it is now time to make amends. Casentino has a fascination all of its own and a history to be envied. It will be difficult for you to forget it once you have been there. Having wound your way down from the Cosuma mountain, its valley is more undulating and softer than the geometrically rigid Chianti area with its rows and rows of vineyards. It is home to historic towns like Poppi with its castle, Stia, Bibbiena and others, all with a tradition for old artisan trades. If you have a car, the best way to explore this area, in my opinion, would be to stay in one of the modern, large and self catering (if one wishes) apartments at Borgo a Caiano. Set in manicured grounds with a large swimming pool, the host and hostess, Roberto and Ombretta cannot do enough to make your stay with them almost a 'family' event. With this home away from home as a base, Casentino is at your doorstep to explore and enjoy.

Room Tip: Parking absolutely no problem.

They call the area of Casentino "Toscana nascosta", because very few tourists have discovered it yet - and maybe that isn't a problem for either locals or tourists. It is a bit of a trek to get up to Caiano but it is well worth the effort - the scenery travelling up from Florence into the mountains is just breathtaking - even on a dull day - and unbelievably beautiful when the sun shines - then when you enter Il Borgo Caiano residence the warmth of your welcome from Ombretta and Roberto more than makes up for any slight chill from the high mountains air!
We were a large group on a writers retreat and we arrived as would be friends and left feeling we were quasi family - I cannot imagine a more hospitable couple who did everything they could to make us comfortable and at home.
Make no mistake you are high up in the mountains - even in midsummer it will be cool at night so woolies and warm pyjamas are needed - but you can simply enjoy the clean air and lack of light pollution and star gaze from the terrace of your apartment at night.
During the day you can take long walks in the areas surrounding the hamlet , which are generally well signposted but maps are also available.
In the summer evenings Roberto barbecued some of the best steaks I have ever eaten (you need to book in advance for this) and Ombretta cooks meals using fruit and vegetables freshly picked from her garden whenever possible. To wash down these delights good wines are available at a reasonable price from reception.
Ombretto and Roberto told me that they do get a lot of repeat business and I can understand why! We very much look forward to returning to Residence Il Borgo Caiano next year.

Room Tip: There are no lifts so you need to advice if you need a ground floor apartment. There is no Fitness Centre per se but there is an excellent outdoor swimming pool and miles of mountain paths to walk through.

We stayed in Residence II Borgo in October for a couple of days. The room was very comfortable, the garden amazing. The only disadvantage was that the rooms were really cold and the heating was indispensable. Unfortunatley it was not included in the price and the bill for it came surprisingly very high. About 30 euro for 3 days- but we were using it only in the morning and in the evenings. I think the place is perfect for summer stay when the pool is open and it is hot. During colder months I would go for sth else.
Please pay attention to the fact that the car is essential as the place is rather remote.

Yesterday 21st july returned from a fabulous 2 weeks at Il Borgo! It was unforgettable, the service, the appartments, the nature and especially Umbretta and lets not forget Roberto (!!!!)where fabulous! Made a lot of new friends and the evening gatherings/dinners where so nice! The Bistecca alla Fiorentine grilled by Roberto at the fireplace was super! The area is super but sometimes a bit remote but staying at the Borgo is perfect, Umbretta always heplfull to get you a beer and later in the evening Roberto ready to serve you a grappa...or two!!! We will definately return..miss it already! For us..we are sure to visit again!
