“What a terrible experience”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

What a terrible Sunday afternoon experience. I ordered a strong coffee and a selection from the tapas menu. The coffee was very weak and not to my liking, I took it back and asked for one much stronger, the replacement came and was exactly the same. Not much point in trying again.
After 30 min we enquired about our food order and was then informed that there was a mix up (forgotten about) and it would be out shortly. We declined and said that we would like a refund as we needed to go. The waitress offered us a complimentary wine ($9) or a refund ($28) , not both - how odd.
We mentioned this to the waitress and she immediately started arguing about it being our fault. Really not much point in continuing a conversation with that attitude so as we left we mentioned to the bar man (we had to interupt his txt conversation) that the waitress was very agressive and then he went on the defense. Easiest thing to do is leave, these people clearly had no idea. The barman then said 'see you again.' I went back in (this place is tiny, 3 steps out the door) and suggested that he really was being quite antagonistic. He then invited me in his words "why dont you stay and drink pi**weak coffee'
What very odd behaviour.
Very poor coffee, forgot the food order, they wantedto trade a $9 wine for a $28 food order, argumentative and there were only 5 other people there.
Take your chances at this converted sandwich shop at your peril. There are too many quality small bars in close to Claremont to have to put up with that.

“They forgot about us! Lucky it was the weekend!”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

We went to breakfast (all day) this mornins and requested the breakfast menu only to be told that they were serving lunch. When we explained we would be using the ourdeal voucher, the host went to ask about this and returned with the breakfast menu. Honestly, the staff was frieendly and helpful, when they remembered we were there, but there were long pauses between offers of service. We decided to indulge in some people watching and the location was pleasant. Outside the music from inside was bearable.
We each chose the scrambled eggs with chorizo, cherry tomatoes and spinach leaves, with ciabatta bread. Presentation of the spinach was a bit abandoned and the spice was poured libarally over the plate; however, taste of the food was great! All ingredients were fresh and the toast was outstandingly good. (No butter was offered, which was not a problem for us.)
The coffee was pleasing and milk was frothy, though a little cool for my taste. The juices were from bottles, but were presented attractively in good glassware.
I was impressed by the immediate service of the cold water which came in a recycled glass bottle. The glasses came with ice.
I would return here. The staff is enthusiastic and well meaning. (We were three hours there, and it was a pleasant way to spend Sunday lunchtime, before we went to Sculptures by the Sea.)

“excellent food”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

the madrid is a modern tapas/restaurant/bar that caters for all ages - the tapas we saw being served looked generous in quantity and appetising , we chose to order steaks ; they arrived on a thin wooden board with a home-made tomato relish, some french fries and a caeser salad.the salad was obviously prepared fresh and apart from other ingredients included toasted bread , anchovies , bacon, and was topped with a poached egg - the steaks were cooked superbly . a thoroughly enjoyable meal . even if you just wanted to go out for a drink , the madrid is an ideal place to visit.
