During our first visit to Algarrobo, Chile in August 2008, my husband and I made reservations via the internet at a local Cabana, which was so filthy and rundown that we seriously thought about sleeping in our rental car.
Fortunately, the next day we had lunch at a charming local restaurant, Las Tinajas, and asked (using our electronic ttranslator) for an inexpensive local hotel. We were referred to Las Tinajas Hostal a few hundred meters down the street.
Despe the fac that we spoke only a handful of words in Spanish and the owners spoke an equal number of English words, we thoroughly enjoyed our 10-day stay with owners Juan and Favioa and 18-month old son Vincente.
The accommodations are clean and comfortable, and the owners could not be more accommodating. Breakfast was typical Chilean fare of rolls, tea and fruit, but every morning, they made a point of adding something more or different for their American guests. And every morning, little Vincente welcomed us to the dining area with his infectious smile.
This is not a high-rise, chrome and glass monster of a hotel. It is a comfortable hostal with charming hosts located directly across the street from the ocean. Accommodations range from single rooms to multi-room suites for families.
Unfortunately, we will not be staying at Las Tinajas Hostal again: we were so captivated by Algarrobo that we purchased a condo there. But I would highly recommend that YOU stay there. You will not have the unpleasant experience we had our first night in Chile at the Cabana: you will be welcomed as if you are a member of the family!
