I understand the definition and idea of a 'hostel' is cheap, basic, budget accommodation but as far as I'm concerned that's not a reason for a 'hostel' to be a total hell-on-earth experience.
I was booked in for 4 nights - I stayed for one, and even that was out of pure exhaustion.
The Lamrock Lodge is on a dark street which generally smells of weed. The outside of the hostel is just full of people smoking, drinking and kicking balls about. Fair enough, it's a stones throw away from the beach, but it's the sort of street where muggings happen.
The woman on reception doesn't look like she knows how to smile - she certainly didn't at any point during our brief stay.
The room was VILE. Call me a princess, but clean sheets go a long way. The ones in our twin room felt damp and dirty, the pillows smelt gross (good job I had my own pillowcase and sleeping bag liner!) There was rubbish left in the room, the window had bars across it and the sink stunk. In fact the whole room smelt bad - the only good thing was that it didn't smell of weed like the rest of the building.
The bathroom needs a good clean - I wouldn't go in without thongs on. In fact I wouldn't enter that building ever again, things or not. One to avoid without a doubt - don't be fooled into thinking that it'll be 'ok as hostels go' - its straight up disgusting and I wouldn't go again if someone offered me a million bucks.
